When the Berkshire Museum needed $10 million for an expansion project, Kenneth Nash stepped up. A lifelong Pittsfield resident, Nash, 77, gave $100,000 in 2006. And that wasn't his first stroke of generosity. Earlier that year, Nash had pledged $50,000... ...

Sorry to keep bringing you down and ruining your morning buzz (why you're drinking at 5am is something we'll get into later), but here's some more bad museum news to add to our reports last week . The Boston Globe has this gloomy report that Museums' financial woes don't just stop at the big corporate donor, but will trickle down and affect their annual hauls from the bigger, private donations and likely even with the small change donors who drop a few coins in their visits (assuming they can even visit in the first place and pay entrance fees). It's a pretty somber story and one that doesn't paint a pretty picture of things to come. Granted, we know that the financial markets pretty much operate on emotional levels and we're just making it worse by saying all these depressing things, but hey, what can you do, right? Here's a bit about not wanting to even talk to donors right now: One thing arts officials are not doing is pressuring potential donors. "Because so much of the fund-raising everywhere in the last five years has come from the financial world, I think it will color all of your planning," said Hans Morris , president of Visa Inc . and head of Mass MoCA 's finance committee. "If I had [potential donor] who had been at [collapsed firm] Lehman [Brothers] , I wouldn't call right now." New Career Opportunities Daily: The best jobs in media ...

The US has had two bouts of Egyptian mania in the past hundred years. First was in the early 1920s, when King Tutankhamen 's tomb was discovered, leading to influence the art deco style. Later, it was the late 70s, which among other things resulted in perhaps Steve Martin 's most famous song . So we can only sit and speculate as to what this third wave will bring, as the infamous King Tut exhibit returns to America (we're purposefully skipping over the fact that it was also here in 2005 and 2006, because that doesn't work into this narrative we've got cooking, or maybe it was just the warming up process). Starting out at the Dallas Museum of Art , where the exhibit just opened , it will then travel to two other, yet-to-be named cities, bringing with it both its cash cow heritage, a whole ton of curses that will likely involve frogs, and perhaps a new day in US trends. Here's a bit: "Tut mania is back," said John Norman , president of Arts and Exhibitions International , an organizer of the exhibit. The exhibit features about 130 objects -- more than twice the number in the 1970s show -- including more than 50 of Tut's burial objects such as a golden crown Howard Carter discovered still on the head of the mummy. About 80 objects from the tombs of other royals and those with connections to the royal family will also be on display. The Tut death mask, a showstopper of the 1970s run, won't be displayed because it's no longer allowed o ...

Filed under: Art , Lux Tips Whether you're a prince or a pauper, there's probably a day (or night) you can get into the best Museums in your area for free. For example, The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis offers free admission every Thursday night (sponsored by Target), and the first Saturday of every month. Their sculpture garden, where you find the Spoonbridge and Cherry by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, at right, is always free. In New York, you can always visit the Guggenheim in Soho for free, as well as The Whitney at Phillip Morris and The Museum of American Folk Art. A number of other Museums offer a "suggested donation" admission, and are instructed to treat you the same whether you're donating $1 or the full fare. Here's a pretty good list for New York . The Art Institute of Chicago is free from 5-8 on Thursdays, Los Angeles free days are listed here , and if you find yourself in Paris, the Louvre is free on the first Sunday of every month and on Bastille Day, July 14th. Be sure to Google Museums in your area, or check the website of any museum you intend to visit to see if there's a free day of which you can take advantage. It's just another easy way to make life more lux for cheap or free.   Permalink  |  Email this  |  Linking Blogs  |  Comments ...
