What KDKA and CNN Kept Out of Their Murtha 'Surge Has Worked' Coverage

Ecclesiastes, the book of the Bible which begins with “… all is vanity…,” contains this warning: “… the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.” That may be true, but in at least one House (of Representatives), John Murtha has shown us ample evidence of his foolish and vain heart. Congressman Murtha has gotten a lot of mileage out of his career as a Marine. He served in Vietnam, and was awarded both Bronze Star and Purple Hearts for his service. Then, he spent years in the Corps as a reservist. Others may choose to quibble about the... ...

A jaw-dropping political miracle may be on the horizon. No, I'm not talking about the second coming of the Obamessiah. I'm talking about the long-deserved comeuppance of troop-smearing, pork-feasting, scandal-tainted Democratic Rep. Jack Murtha of Pennsylvania. The 18-term congressman's challenger, staunch conservative Republican newcomer William. . . ...

One of Congress's most outspoken critics of the war as well as last year's surge in troops, Rep. Jack Murtha (D-Penn.), told a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, news station on Thursday that he believes things have gotten better in Iraq. Yet, apart from CNN, his statements appear to have gone largely unnoticed. This of course is in stark contrast to the media frenzy that occurred in November 2005 when Murtha called for an immediate withdrawal of troops. I guess we should be thankful that CNN discovered the report done by CBS affiliate KDKA on Thursday, and shared the news with its viewers during Friday's "The Situation Room" ( video available here ): BRIAN TODD, CNN CORRESPONDENT: After saying at one point there was no way the troop surge in Iraq would work, John Murtha is giving a nod to the operation . (BEGIN VIDEOTAPE) TODD (voice-over): From one of the most brutal critics of the president's conduct in Iraq, a more upbeat take on how the war is going. Interviewed by Pittsburgh TV station KDKA, Democratic congressman and Vietnam veteran John Murtha is asked, did the surge in Iraq work? REP. JOHN Murtha, (D) PENNSYLVANIA: I think the short term it certainly reduced incidents . I'm not sure whether it's because of the Iraqis are just worn out, but certainly the way they're doing it today makes a big difference . TODD: Murtha said that before, and he's still not backing off his overall position on Iraq, a stand he took two and a half years ...

This post builds on Noel Sheppard's NewsBusters entry earlier this morning. Noel covered portions of Pennsylvania Congressman John Murtha's Thursday interview with Pittsburgh TV Station KDKA used by CNN's "Situation Room" on Friday ( transcript here [Murtha segment is about halfway through]; video here ). CNN carried KDKA footage showing that Murtha has grudgingly acknowledged the obvious: That the troop surge in Iraq has, in his words, "in the short-term ..... certainly reduced incidents," but that "I'm not sure whether it's because of the Iraqis are just worn out, but certainly the way they're doing it today makes a big difference." What KDKA decided to keep from TV viewers is arguably at least as important as what the station showed. In interview footage left on the cutting room floor, Murtha falsely claimed that less than 1/3 of the Iraqi benchmarks have been met, and that the majority of Americans "want us out" of Iraq as fast as possible. But most explosively, the Pennsylvania congressman claimed that a major reason why the troop surge has been successful is that before that time "we broke down doors, we went in and we killed people inadvertently." In partial defense of KDKA, the station posted the entire 20-minute interview at its web site (go to this KDKA link ; type "Murtha" in the seach, and select the "Web Extra: Congressman John Murtha Interview"; also, in case KDKA gets uncomfortable, an edited 8-minute version of the ...

clipped by: esundby clipper's remarks: Murtha wants so bad to turn our war heroes into criminals. What a lowlife scumbag. Clip Source: www.wnd.com Murtha wrong, video at Haditha hearing shows Evidence of firefight attack on Marines presented to judge U.S. Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., who publicly accused the Marines of killing Iraqi civilians in "cold blood," was wrong, according to video presented as evidence at a hearing for an officer charged in the case stemming from the battle in Haditha. "If you go back [to Murtha's description] there was no [Improvised Explosive Device], there was no firefight, it was like there was a phantom menace," said Brian Rooney, a spokesman for the The Thomas More Law Center, which is representing Marine Lt. Col. Jeffrey Chessani against charges in the case. "However we have the firefight on video. You can't deny it," Rooney told WND after a two-day motions hearing in Chessani's case came to a conclusion. There was no immediate ruling on the motions presented by the defense team to the hearing officer, Col. Stephen Folsom. ...

I am completely in favor of the female breast, you see; and so I feel that calling Murtha one utterly slanders what might be a perfectly innocent mammary. Three comments (in all of which I do agree with Gateway Pundit): 1). Murtha really needs to learn to actually read his briefing materials. Or at least figure out what year it is: his talking points ( 5 versus 15 of 18 ). 2). Murtha really needs to apologize to the men that he's slandered in the past before he starts in with new slanders: Murtha: I think the short term it [the Bush Surge] has reduced incidents. I'm not sure if it's because the Iraqis are just worn out but certainly the way they are doing it today it makes a big difference. It used to be we broke down doors. We went in and we killed people inadvertently. Now they're much more careful about it. Charming fellow, no? 3). If you wonder why certain people wince at best, and laugh hysterically at worst, when the phrase "Democratic credibility in national security policy" comes up - it's because people like the person capable of 1). & 2). are given as examples of credible Democrats on that issue. Moe PS: By all means, Murtha: you just go ahead and support Senator Barack Obama. He almost deserves you. PPS: I lied: 4). Lt. Colonel William Russell is running in this district . ...
