The Sunday night lineup on The CW begins so early it may still be considered the afternoon - 5 p.m. That's when an outfit called Media Rights Capital takes over the evening - just as the WWE took over Friday night entertainment previously, buying the time, selling the ads, keeping the profits ("SmackDown" moved to MyNetwork TV starting Friday). While the lousy "Valentine" and the slightly better "Easy Money" take up the prime time slot, the earlier shows include two episodes each of "4Real," a pretty good celebrity/travelogue show that has its basis (so far) on some kind of social good. So there's Cameron Diaz climbing around Peru and a rapper trying to shoot a new video in one of the most crowded and poor areas of Africa. It's all imported from Canadian TV, so it's all done pretty well. "In Harm's Way" is another one of those tough job sagas, of which I am so tired. I didn't stay long. It was another Sunday in which football bumped "60 Minutes" which bumped "The Amazing Race," making it one of the most difficult reality shows to actually record for future use. It's always cut in half. Producers should compensate for game runovers by cutting network promos or trimming "60 Minutes" on the fly (cut Andy Rooney for a week? I could live with that). As it is, "Amazing Race" fans are advised to tape "Cold Case" that follows just in case of future runovers. Anyway, not much to report on "Amazing Race," except that some people are so abs ...

The network has announced its holiday-specials lineup for this year, and it's a little bigger than usual. The Muppet special, titled "Letters to Santa -- A Muppet Christmas," is one of several new shows NBC will use to help fill out its end-of-the-year schedule, in addition to old standbys like the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, "It's a Wonderful Life" and "Christmas in Rockefeller Center." "We want to give our viewers, especially families, some great original shows that they can gather around the TV and watch together this holiday season," says Craig Plestis, who oversees specials and alternative programming for NBC. BURBANK -- Poor Miss Piggy. Like most aging stars in Hollywood, that prima donna pig, along with most of her Muppet pals, has struggled to find substantial roles. Almost nobody under the age of 30 remembers "Pigs in Space." All everyone wants to talk about is this Hannah Montana person. What's a down-on-her-luck puppet to do? Walt Disney Co. feels her pain. Since it bought Miss Piggy, Kermit and crew in 2004, executives have struggled to figure out how to put them to work. Efforts in 2005 to rejuvenate the furry creatures created by Jim Henson sputtered as the Muppets got lobbed among corporate divisions, and a new television series -- a parody of "America's Next Top Model" called "America's Next Muppet" -- died in the planning stages. ...
