Another week, another episode of Hugs and Kisses from Mr. Everett True , who would never write like a hack. Offended parties can reach him at everett@planbmag.com Hugs and Kisses The Relocated Outbursts of Everett True This week: A lesson in "writing" Have you noticed how magazines have vastly different writing styles? The mainstream press favours a more ‘objective’ approach—vaguely bloodless, borderline reportage—because it needs to be crystal-clear for a whole raft of readers who view music as equally as important as remembering to put the bins out Sunday night and surfing. This leads to a weird juxtaposition of straight facts and hidden enthusiasm: mainstream newspaper critics learning early on that if they want to survive, they need to exercise restraint. It’s long occurred to me that actually loving music is a hindrance in these circumstances, but perhaps I’m being unduly cynical. Anyway, for better and worse, here is my attempt at proving the style isn’t beyond the reach of anyone… ...

By: Dennis Cook The title nimbly gets one guessing. Who's lucky? How are they lucky? Am I lucky? Nicely done, Mudhoney , who've kept listeners on their toes since 1988. Long ago saddled as a "grunge band," Mudhoney just likes sludge and big amps, and really who doesn't once they've sipped at the same trough as Crazy Horse, The Stooges, et al.? Beginning lost in the look in a girl's eyes, bouncing to a stray Jerry Lee Lewis piano outburst and Cro-Magnon drums, The Lucky Ones (Sub Pop), their eighth album in roughly 20 years, is quality meat 'n' taters rock. Inching a bit closer to Dead Moon territory this time out, Mudhoney conjures up Johnny Thunders, John Bonham and a young Chuck Berry and fixes them up with a shot of their respective poisons, and beckons us to join them with a sly come-on. "Inside Out Over You" seems like good but generic garage thud until they add a tiny Arabic tinged coda. Same deal with the title cut on the garage tip, that is until the song's full bite sinks into you, Jim Carroll spit and tobacco ooze infecting your wound as they howl, "The lucky ones have already gone down/ The lucky ones are lucky they aren't around." Well, opening inquiry answered. They revisit their metal leanings on "Next Time" & "Tales of Terror" and then dive into their own version of summer psychedelia on "And The Shimmering Light." Everywhere it sounds like they enjoyed making this record, where their creative juices flow freely and ...

Mudhoney, Record Hop, Melba Toast Granada Theater September 5, 2008 Better than: Putting on a flannel shirt and watching a collection of Nirvana and Pearl Jam videos. (Michael Alves) Even though each member is now in his 40s, the guys in Mudhoney rocked like seething, youthful beasts last night at the Granada Theater. Dressed more like four guys going out for a round of golf, Mark Arm and crew put on a powerful 90-minute display of punky garage rock that never wavered in its intensity or chaotic amateurism. The set list alternated between cuts from the band’s latest release, The Lucky Ones , and the recent double disc reissue of Super Fuzz Big Muff , Mudhoney’s legendary 1988 debut, and fans erupted in inebriated shouts of joy when the band performed grungy chestnuts such as “Touch Me, I’m Sick” and “Suck You Dry.” But it was the more recent material, such as the (dare I say it) sentimental “The Lucky Ones” where Mudhoney connected beyond the standard Iggy and the Stooges three-chorded roar. ...

Malleus "The Hammer of God" book and print signing Wednesday, Oct. 22, 4 pm - 7 pm: La Luz de Jesus Gallery 4633 Hollywood Bl. Los Angeles California 90027 (323) 666-7667 www.laluzdejesus.com Online press release with images: http://leejosephpublicity.com/show/malleus MALLEUS Malleus is an artistic and graphic rock-devoted power-trio from Italy that creates handmade limited edition silkscreened posters for the celebration of gigs and events. Their work raises the visual side of Music to an Art level. The trio’s catalogue represents an ongoing study of the female form with roots in mythology, folklore, Renaissance, Symbolism, and Neoclassicism, continuing all the way up to the modern, postmodern and contemporary periods. The idea of the Muse, a central artistic concept as long as history has been history, is the fulcrum of Malleus’ poetics and aesthetics. Malleus' creative process involves different instruments and methods, but the manual art gesture remains their main cardinal point. Malleus has created posters for bands such as: Aphex Twin, Beck, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Blue Cheer, Blues Explosion, Brant Bjork, the Chemical Brothers, the Cure, Current 93, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Dresden Dolls, Flaming Lips, Iggy Pop & the Stooges, Mars Volta, Melvins, Motorpsycho, Monster Magnet, Mudhoney, Mark Lanegan, Nine Inch Nails, Om, The Prodigy, Sigur Ros, Queens of the Stone Age, Sex Pistols, Sonic Youth, Isis, Tool, Turbonegro, Ufom ...

The guy on the right is officially running for president. I have to admit, every time I get an email that says "Barr for President" I briefly imagine our music editor, Brian J. Barr in the Oval Office, with Justin Farrar as his VP, Neil Young his Secretary of State. Mudhoney would have played the convention, and Oakley Hall would play a Bloody Mary Breakfast in the Rose Garden the first Sunday after he takes office. Then, of course, I realize that it's actually Congressman Bob Barr who's running on the Libertarian ticket, and I get all kinds of disappointed. Tonight, while you're live blogging, Twittering, chatting, snarking, and playing a drinking game during tonight's debate, be SURE to check out Rep. Barr's "virtual debate" with O'Biden and McPalin. Press release after the jump. ...

Word Magazine's readers have been creating a map detailing where iconic album cover photos were taken . So far, there are three listed in the Seattle area: Damien Jurado's Waters Ave. S. , taken at Waters Ave. S.; Mudhoney's Superfuzz Bigmuff , taken at 207 First Ave. in Pioneer Square; and (of course) Sir Mix-A-Lot's "Posse on Broadway," taken at the NE corner of John and Broadway. (The definition of "album" is a loose one, obviously.) That's a good start, but there must be a lot missing. Was the cover for the Singles soundtrack shot locally? Sleater-Kinney's The Hot Rock (or was that PDX)? Do us a favor: Check out the map, then add a cover or two to our little spot on the globe. ...
