A high level of self-determination is rarely achieved by a hip-hop generation often unwilling to risk its industry status or see beyond mere rhetoric and posturing. But Mos Def is an artist unwilling to fit into the stereotypical mold. His devotion to hip-hop and passion for social consciousness combine with a synergy seldom seen in the genre. ...

THE EVOLUTION WILL NOT BE TELEVISED Gil Scott-Heron at S.O.B.'s this past MLK Day; photo by Michael Clancy Gil Scott-Heron Mos Def JVC Jazz Festival Carnegie Hall Saturday, June 28 Gil Scott-Heron, the now 59 year-old “Godfather of Hip-Hop,” wrote and sang this in the early 1980s: “I take pride in what's mine—is that really a crime—When you know I ain't got nothing else? / Only millions of sounds picks me up when I'm down, let me salvage a piece of myself / What it has will surely last, but is that Jazz?” Jazz, that most benighted of African American genres and my late Mother’s favorite, still powered many dimensions of my world then with the music fighting off its coming moribund era characterized by pop-rock artists such as Sting seeking longevity and legitimacy in the bosom of Mama Afrika and the aural wallpaper of smooth radio formats. When Scott-Heron sang that lyric in Robert Mugge’s 1982 tribute film to his genius, Black Wax , jazz was still a totality, a feeling, a culture which far exceeded its Afropean origins in New Orleans—and sometimes saved sensitive, mostly African-descended folk from themselves. It made sense for this ascendant apprentice bluesician and Lincoln-educated public intellectual to invoke the spirits of jazz masters past and present—Count Basie, Lady Day, Sir Duke Ellington, Lester “Prez” Young, Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley, his sometime collaborator Ron Carter—whose struggles and innovations he benefitted ...

Alana Wyatt-Smith, the 29-year old estranged wife of actor/rapper, Mos Def is penning a tell-all book. Yup, that’s right she is jumping on the ‘kiss and tell’ bandwagon. Since when did it become popular to put all your business in the street and get paid for it? In the book, ‘Breaking My Code Of Silence’, she makes explosive allegations that Mos Def was physically abusive to her during their marriage. Wyatt-Smith, a former stripper and seventh grade drop-out, names some of the other men that she’s been involved with including Kanye West. “I disagree with putting names of people in there, just out of respect for their wives and children,” Wyatt-Smith told The Toronto Star. “If this was about making money, getting rich, I could have wrote a tell-all book, 10 times better than Karrine Steffans. “People want to know about the biggest names in the NBA, who proposed to who, and did what, and this and that; I could have put some stuff in there that would have made it a number one seller within days. I use nicknames, initials, that myself and the gentleman would know; the ones named I got permission from.” Wyatt-Smith also alleges that she and Mos Def, who has six kids by four different women, are still technically married. “He won’t sign the papers,” she told The Toronto Star. “He told my lawyer if he can’t have me, nobody else will.” Wow, a former stripper, who only went to the seventh grade……..guess he didn’t really marry her for her br ...

Mos Def's ex-wife, Alana Wyatt-Smith, has released a book titled Breaking The Code of Silence which chronicles her marriage to the Brooklyn rapper. Smith and Mos Def met in Toronto in 2005 and they married three days later. In the book, Smith claims during their marriage Mos Def was demanding, overprotective, and physically abusive. Despite separating in October 2006, Smith claims that Mos still refuses to grant her a divorce. “He won't sign the papers,” Smith explained to The Toronto Star.  “He told my lawyer if he can't have me, nobody else will.” Smith hails from Canada and is a former stripper and seventh grade dropout.  She also details her turbulent childhood, difficult teenage years and her relationships with other celebrities who include various professional athletes and Kanye West. Looks like we'll need to add one more item to perennial Brooklyn hip-hop veteran Mos Def's resume: rapper, actor, poet, band geek . Turns out that the mighty Mos has been doing some stuff with Mos Def's Big Band on the side since last year, namely a tribute to J Dilla . And, unlike other acts who've tried their hands at this with mixed results , they actually sound really good . Their next performance is on June 28 (with special guest Gil Scott-Heron !) at the JVC Jazz Festival in New York City. The event is described as "an evening of music and spoken word with material drawn from Miles Davis, Beyoncé, James Brown, and others." ...
