South Florida girls appear poised to do something special in another United States Golf Association event. Six years after Boca Raton's Morgan Pressel became the youngest player to qualify for the U.S. Women's Open at 12, Coral Springs' Alexis Thompson broke the mark last year. Pressel went on to win the U.S. Women's Amateur at 17. Four South Florida girls are in the early hunt to win the U.S. Girls' Junior Championship after they all won their first-round matches Wednesday at Hartford (Conn.) Golf Club. If Boca Raton's Madison Pressel and Plantation's Lindy Duncan both win this morning, they'll play each other in the afternoon in the round of 16. Thompson could meet a Pressel/Duncan survivor in the semifinals. The winner of that semifinal could meet Pembroke Pines' Kyle Roig in the finals. It's possible. Again, it's a testament to the talent down here. Over in the U.S. Junior at Shoal Creek in Alabama, Cooper City's T.J. Vogel won his first-round match in his bid to take home the title. Vogel's hot this summer. He has soared from No. 66 to No. 9 in the Polo national junior rankings in the past five weeks. ...

Kudos to Joe Palladino of the Waterbury Republican for going to Hartford Golf Club Wednesday to write a column on the U.S. Girls' Junior Golf Championship. He's the first local media member other than someone from The Courant to show up at one of the U.S. Golf Association's 13 national championship. That's an embarrassment for the press and an insult to the USGA and Hartford GC, which raised $400,000 and has hundreds of volunteers donating their time to the event and the girls, most of whom would embarrass a lot of male adult golfers, especially writers and radio and TV folks, wherever the latter are. The 156 starters --- and especially many of the 64 who qualified for match play --- are the true future stars of the game and will be on the LPGA Tour, competing against Lorena Ochoa, Paula Creamer and Morgan Pressel, whose younger sister, Madison, is playing at Hartford GC and won a first-round match for the first time. Let's hope even more spectators and someone else from the media shows up before the tournament ends Saturday ... or Sunday ... or (don't even think about). ... With the LPGA off for the second straight week, there was minimal change to the top 20 in the latest Rolex Women's World Golf Rankings. No. 1 Lorena Ochoa was again followed by Annika Sorenstam at the top. Suzann Pettersen inched up one and bumped Yani Tseng down to fourth this week. Paula Creamer, Cristie Kerr, Ji-Yai Shin, Karrie Webb, Helen Alfredsson and Seon-Hwa Lee remained in the fifth to 10th positions. Inbee Park and Jeong Jang exchanged places with Park up to No. 11. Maria Hjorth held steady at 13 and was again followed by Angela Park and Eun- Hee Ji. Momoko Ueda and Yuri Fudoh both moved up a notch to 16 and 17, while Jee Young Lee fell two to 18th. Hee-Won Han and Morgan Pressel rounded out the top 20 again. ... Source: www.kentucky.com --- 39 days ago

Now that the last tune-up is over, time to move on to the last major of the LPGA season, the Women's British Open. The poll below, of course, leaves out some good options: Cristie Kerr, Ji Yai Shin, Karrie Webb, et.al. I probably could have left out Morgan Pressel, but she fits in so well with the other two 20-ish one-time major winners. Sunningdale is a parkland course, not a links course, so no need to consider golfers with games suited to links play. (And I'll go with Lorena Ochoa to be Ricoh suavé .) Should be fun to hear the galleries today at the P&G Beauty NW Arkansas Championship Presented by John Q Hammons, where the biggest name in the field isn't Paula Creamer or Morgan Pressel or Natalie Gulbis or even US Open champion Inbee Park. How about this ? The biggest name in the field this weekend is...(drum roll please)...Stacy Lewis...playing in just her second LPGA event as a professional. The first was last week's US Women's Open where she finshed T-3. (so technically THIS is her first official LPGA start since the US Opens are not PGA or LPGA events - they are run by the USGA) Lewis, a former U of Arkansas golfer, is going to hear the Razorback "Sooo-eeee PIG" call all day - unfortunately, the tournament directors put Lewis off in the first group of the tournament - 7:15 this morning, so her round won't get much more than a highlight glance when TV coverage starts. Hopefully, she'll have another good tournament and we'll see her and her gallery on the weekend broadcasts. ... Source: www.waggleroom.com --- 95 days ago

Three other events have our attention this week. In the annual “this event predicts success for no one” event for women, Amanda Blumenhurst takes on Azahara Munyoz (no tilde for the “n,” so I substituted a “y") in the 2-round final . Both finalists played poorly (lots of bogies) in their semifinal wins, although each had a hot quarterfinal round (lots of birdies), so who knows what we’ll see. Other than Morgan Pressel (2005 champion and what has she done lately?), there’s been little success from the winners. Pat Hurst in 1990 is the last winner to have multiple tour wins. Amanda and Azahara could take a dive, except the runners-up have less-than-stellar records, too. Simply not a measure of future success. A better measure of future success takes place in the hills of “Kentuck.” No, not JB Holmes learning how to (and continuing to) crawl…It’s the Futures Tour battle of the wee titans. Mindy Kim, two-time winner, has a one-shot gap over US Open darling Stacy Lewis, who sliced a 64 off the loaf on Saturday. Another shot back is Vicky “Tabasco” Hurst. Why “Tabasco?” She’s the hottest player on tour in terms of golf scoring average. She might be sexy, too, but she’s young and I’m old and not Roger Clemens. This one should provide some fireworks. The third event that might be worth some attention is the N-Wide’s Wichita Open . Only problem is, storylines? Scott Piercy…who? Hunter Haas…double who? Dan Summerhays…won on the N-Wide as a ... With all the criticism of Michelle Wie this week, I'd like to actually defend her career path. Certainly if it were her goal to be one of the greatest female golfers of all time, she is not off to a great start. For those of us who are golf fans (especially those of you who are big fans of womens golf) her career seems to be a joke at this point. She's not exactly on the path toward the hall of fame and not likely to be spoken of in the same sentence as Annika Sorenstam or Nancy Lopez. However, if her career goal is to be rich and famous, it seems obvious to me that she is miles ahead of where she would be had she pursued a more traditional career path (futures tour, Q-school, playing only in women's tournaments, etc.) According to Forbes magazine she earned $17 million last year compared to Annika's $8 million. As far as fame goes, Michelle is probably one of the top five well known female golfers among the general public. Had she pursued an LPGA career it is likely that she would just be another of the 20 somethings sharing the limelight with Paula Creamer, Morgan Pressel, Natalie Gulbis, et al. The point is that there are many ways to judge the wisdom of her (or her parents') career choices but the only way to truly judge them is whether or not they achieve their goals. ... I'm curious to see how the 15 3rd-year LPGAers playing in the year's last major respond to the summer heroics of the Super Sophs and rookies. Among the elite in this class, only Seon Hwa Lee has seriously stepped up her game, but there's been a lot of movement lower in the ranks. Let's take a look (at everyone in the Women's British Open except Louise Stahle and Veronica Zorzi--you'll have to go to Mostly Harmless to check out the rest of the top 24 and see my work). Simply the Best 1. Seon Hwa Lee : In late May, I mentioned that despite Lee's so-so start in 2008, "she could turn it around any week now." Lo and behold, she's won 2 events since then, broken the million dollar barrier in season winnings, and crossed the 3 million dollar rubicon in career winnings. Not bad for a player who still hasn't hit her stride. If history repeats itself, she'll get hot after the European swing. But I wonder if it isn't her time to step up in a major.... 2. Morgan Pressel : For awhile there she was neither driving for show nor putting for dough, but she hasn't finished outside the top 25 in her last 7 starts. Could major #2 come this week? Like Lee she doesn't have a good history on the European swing, but she's put in extra preparation this year. Don't put it past her! 3. Jee Young Lee : Hasn't finished outside the top 20 in her last 7 events--oh, except for those 2 missed cuts. That's the story of her season--i-n-c-o-n-s-i-s-t-e-n-c-y! But he ...
