1. And your 2008 Cup champion will be...? After his road course win at Sonoma on June 22 there seems to be little that can stand in the way of Kyle Busch taking his first season title -- except, perhaps... Kyle Busch. With five wins in the first 17 races, the Shrub has excelled on just about every sort of venue, from Talladega's superspeedway to the Monster Mile at Dover, and he has a 67-point lead in the standings over second-place Jeff Burton. ... The crowd stood on its feet with two outs in the eighth inning, sensing a rally, and chants of "Manny, Manny, Manny" rang out. Manny Ramirez had won the game the night before. THe fans wanted him to come through with some late-game heroics again. He didn't win it, but he made it a ballgame. Ramirez hit the first pitch he saw off Matt Guerrier -- a 95-Mile-per-hour fastball -- into the seats on the Green Monster for a two-run home run that tied the game, 5-5. Jacoby Ellsbury had scored during the previous at-bat thanks to a sacrifice grounder from J.D. Drew. Ellsbury had doubled to left. The Sox took their first lead on Brandon Moss's single to score Kevin Youkilis, who also doubled. ... Source: www.boston.com --- 58 days ago

My last post was on July 1. It's August 15 and my world couldn't possibly be any more different. I finally started running again about a week ago. It took me a few weeks to get my bounce back after a certain person stole it from me -- I'm amazed how much mental positivity it takes to get me into my running gear and out the door for a jog. Running is supposed to be so good for your brain, so helpful with serotonin levels and adrenaline and helping you out of the doldrums. And it does! It's just not as easy as it sounds: go jogging, feel better! Especially when I had to feel better in order to go jogging. Catch-22 (or 31, in my case). So I've been making it out on my newest 5+ miler, pretty easy, every other day or so. To clarify, that's not a lot of runs so far -- only 3. But three is better than none, and WAY better than 3 runs spaced weeks apart. I'll be psyched if I can keep up 3 runs per week along with my climbing routine, which has been going amazingly. So 3 5.25-Mile jogs, a new route that feels more flat than my old one (there is no 1 Monster hill, but rolling hills instead). And a new apartment where I can relearn how it feels to be a free agent (read: single). I'm tapping my inner 22-year-old as I type. Time to start blogging about each run again ... ... Dover International Speedway's 40th anniversary celebration will include a tribute to the first driver to win a race at the Monster Mile, Richard Petty. He took the first checkered flag on the high-banked racetrack on July 6, 1969, driving Petty Enterprises' No. 43 Ford. He led 150 of 300 laps in the inaugural race, then called the Mason-Dixon 300. Forty years and seven Dover wins later, Petty will be honored with a marquee plaque on the Monster Monument at Victory Plaza. The four-foot high granite plaque, which will include Petty's career and Dover highlights and an engraved image of the Hall of Famer, will be added to the monument Sept. 20. Petty joins Bobby Allison as the only drivers with plaques on the monument. The king of stock-car racing, with 200 career NASCAR Cup Series wins, notched the 199th win of his career at Dover on May 20, 1984. ... Source: www.thepetitionsite.com --- 34 days ago
The FAA is nearing its' Record of Decision regarding the proposed elevated runway at Fort Lauderdale International Airport. This Monster runway, (Roughly equal to a 3.6 Mile section of the Great Wall of China) if it passes, will be elevated 8 feet at the west end to allow vertical clearance over I-95, and will run uphill over a distance of approximately 8000 feet to an elevation of 43 feet at the east end, passing over US 1 and the Florida East Coast Railroad tracks slightly east of the midpoint. The bridges to span US 1 and the FEC tracks will be equivalent to 5 stories in height, and will allow aircraft to pass over the traffic below with the FEC tracks being routed through approximately a 1000 foot long tunnel. There are many options open for expansion at FLL that do not pose the environmental threat, the projected cost of a billion dollars, or the risks involved in this "lack of plan". An elevated runway presents some inherent safety risks, but when you add slope and bridges into the equation, the risks jump immensely. 1. The risk of terrorist bombing of a 5 story bridge over a six-lane highway at the time a jumbo aircraft is approaching the bridge is extremely high, and could cause hundreds of deaths and injuries both in the aircraft and in vehicular traffic on the ground below, to say nothing of the millions of dollars in damages to infrastructure and equipment. 2. With the variable winds in the Fort Lauderdale area, th ...

At the recent Pikes Peak race, Nobuhiro 'Monster' Tajima managed to take the title for the third consecutive year. Using a "very heavily modified" Suzuki XL7 , the 58-year-old Suzuki WRC Monster managed to clock a time of 10-minutes and 18.250-seconds on the 12.5-Mile course. None of the other competitors even broke the 11-minutemark making Tajima truly the King of the Mountain. Unfortunately, due to slippery conditions on the tarmac and dirt, Tajima failed to complete the course in less than 10 minutes, losing the $25,000 prize offered by organizers. In fact, the conditions were so bad that the race was red-flagged a total of 14 times and several competitors had to be hospitalized. "The car and tires were perfect, and I couldn't have driven the hill any faster," said Tajima. "But the conditions were very challenging, especially at the top of the course, so I could never have broken 10 minutes. But I'll be back next year..." With a course record of just a second off the 10-minute barrier, Tajima might just pull it off next time when the conditions are right. +Top Gear: Big three for Monster ... It's not exactly like Mark Martin pulled a Babe Ruth and called his shot, or a Joe Namath and “guaranteed” he'll win the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard. But the driver of the No.8 Chevrolet absolutely is confident that could happen in Sunday's race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. “I have every reason to feel good about my chances,” Martin said Friday before two afternoon practices at the historic 2.5-Mile track. “I understand and respect the challenge this sport sets forth, and I understand you can have the fastest car and not win. But I think we should have a fast enough car to be able to challenge.” Martin's car was fourth-fastest in the first practice and eighth-best in the final session before this morning's 10a.m. qualifying, so it's apparent his confidence is not completely unfounded. This whole thing started several weeks ago at Pocono. After qualifying well there, Martin admitted he and his Dale Earnhardt Inc. team were pointing toward this weekend. “That's the one we need to get,” Martin said. “Sometimes miracles happen. Sometimes it all works out, and it almost did at Daytona last year for us. … Daytona and the Brickyard are the two that would be crown jewels of my career, and this team can do it. So that's the place that I have targeted.” The car Martin has for this weekend is one he ran well in at Phoenix and at Richmond. He said his team has put a “Monster” engine in to generate the kind of power needed to push a car ...

Q: A couple of friends and I heard the ghost story of York’s Monster Bridge from many of our peers, when we were in high school. Lots of people have the story down pat, but no one seems to know where it is. Would someone be so kind as to apprise us of its location? Would anyone also happen to know of other allegedly haunted locations? A: In 2005, the News-Times put together a collection of local ghost stories, as an entertainment piece for Halloween. In it, Monster Bridge/Road was discussed. The research conducted at the time rendered the following details: “A half-Mile stretch of road, south of the St. Joseph Cemetery, running along Beaver Creek, has been known as ‘Monster Road’ for many years. Its narrow bridge, hidden beneath a canopy of trees and sheltered from the sun, was said to emit sounds of pain and anguish. That bridge was replaced several years ago, but many a York adult remembers going there as a teenager, to see if the legend was true.” The News-Times also reported on the following other “ghost stories” from the region: • Dark and winding road Another legend centers around a dark, winding road with a small bridge several miles west of York. The story says that many, many years ago, a man lost control of his vehicle on an icy road and was decapitated in the accident. It has been said that on cold and stormy winter nights, one can see what looks like a man carrying his own bloody head. The writer of this legend, who di ... Source: www.examiner.net --- 13 days ago
Officials at I-70 Speedway in Odessa, Mo., can take credit Saturday night for staging a unique type of motorsports program. The high-banked, half-Mile asphalt oval will be holding a program billed as “Monsterageddon.” Monster trucks, arena trucks, school buses and boat races, along with stunts by Doctor Danger will make up the program. Two of Doctor Danger’s stunts will include exploding 50 gallons of gas on a school bus and crashing into four stacked cars. “Doctor Danger has always been a hit with our fans,” track owner and promoter Brad McDonald said. “The younger children really take a liking to what he does.” Tail Gator, Big Dawd, Ozz Monster, Monsterpatrol, Brute Force and Barbarian are six of the pre-entered super trucks. McDonald said four Web sites – www.bigdawg4x4.com, www.shafermotorsports.com, www.bruteforce4x4.com and www.barbarian4x4.com – contain information on the super trucks. “This is a time of the year when we like to present something different for the fans,” McDonald said. “Plus, it’s a good time since it’s back-to-school time for many people. We like to think it’s a good program for the little ones.” The I-70 four-cylinder enduros also will be a part of the program and receive 25 bonus appearance track points for participating. I-70 officials also stage Friday night racing programs for IMCA modifieds, IMCA stock cars, IMCA sportsmod, compact cars and farm trucks on the new dirt track. VALLEY SWITCHING TO SATUR ...
