It is estimated at at least 100,000 people have died in Burma from the cyclone that hit there last week. The renowned 'orchestra of voices' is taking its dozen male singers on the road -- the state's historic Camino Real that links the mission sites. MOST California schoolchildren learn the basic facts about the state's mission history in the fourth grade. Established from 1769 to 1823 by Franciscan Monks from Spain to spread the Roman Catholic faith among the area's Native American population, the series of strategic-religious outposts spanned 650 miles of California coastline, from San Diego to Sonoma, providing Spain with a powerful presence on the Pacific frontier. Today, these monuments are among the state's oldest buildings and most popular tourist destinations. ... Source: upandrunning.entrepreneur.com --- 17 hours ago

The Buddhist Monks have offered more assistance to the people than their own government. It’s hard for me to wrap my mind around big numbers, especially estimated death tolls. This morning state-run radio in Myanmar (which is military-controlled) reports that an estimated 22,000 people perished in the weekend’s storm which bought with it a cyclone devastating [...] ... May 13, 2008 Until recently, all that was popularly known of the mute military regime that has ruled Myanmar for 56 years was its aversion to civil rights and outside scrutiny, evidenced by the long confinement of the popularly elected Aung San Suu Kyi, the fate of Buddhist Monks who occasionally demonstrate in the streets, and its abiding reluctance to allow foreign observers into the country. All of that is par for the dictatorial course. A distaste for opposition and criticism can be understood, if not excused. But even repressive regimes can behave responsibly in the face of natural disaster. Myanmar's junta has revealed itself in the wake of Cyclone Nargis to be more deeply despicable than outsiders imagined. LINK TO ORIGINAL ... Source: aliwlibdem.blogspot.com --- 12 hours ago
Burma (we don't call it Myanmar because that would show we excepted the legitimacy of the military government, which renamed the country Myanmar) enlists hundreds of thousands of child soldiers, commits ethnic cleansing against people from tribes that rebels come from, suppress political freedom and about every Human Right there is. Not long ago we saw the horror of the government's response to the Monks protests. Currently with about 100,000 dead from the cyclone and people so desperate for aid, the government is too suspicious of the west to let much aid in. It is horrific, they are once again murdering their own people. The USA has been acting as if it is giving the most aid, $3million. But the UK are giving $10million. Well done Nick Clegg for calling the international community to be tough with Burma and simply parachute aid down if Burma drags its heels. ... Find more search results for Monks on RSSMicro.com |
