I'm going to purchase either a 2005 Nissan Xterra or a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. If I wait until the new '09 Models are on the dealers’ floors will the asking price come down? Because the cars you’re considering are a few years old, you may not see as dramatic of a price cut as a newer 2008 car would experience when the 2009 Models hit dealerships. Cars.com editor Mike Hanley explains: “I don’t suspect you’ll see a significant decrease when the 2009 Models come out. The launch of a new model tends to only affect the price of the previous model year, in this case 2008 Models. The decrease is usually amplified when the new model is a redesigned version, which tends to make its predecessor less appealing. “Fuel prices, however, might cause both of the vehicles you’re considering to decline in value. With SUVs sitting on dealer lots as many consumers turn toward fuel-efficient cars, there will probably come a time (if it hasn’t happened already) where a dealer will sell an Xterra or Grand Cherokee at a lower price just to get it off the lot. This paper presents comparative results of applying different architectures of generative classifiers (HMM, FHMM, CHMM, Multi-Stream HMM, Parallel HMM ) and discriminative classifier as Conditional Random Fields (CRFs) in human action sequence recognition. The Models are fed with histogram of very informative features such as contours evolution and optical-flow. Motion orientation discrimination has been obtained tiling the bounding box of the subject and extracting features from each tile. We run our experiments on two well-know databases, KTH´s database and Weizmann´s. The results show that both type of Models reach similar score, being the generative model better when used with optical flow features and being the discriminative one better when uses with shape-context features. Last Tuesday, the BBC debuted Britain's Missing Top Model , a reality competition that is like Top Model , except it features disabled people. The eight Models include a deaf TV interpreter, a deaf make-up artist, a paraplegic art student, an administrator with a prosthetic leg, and others. Time reports that last Tuesday's debut "drew half a million viewers in the U.K., driving BBC Three ratings up by 25% for the 9 p.m. time slot." That popularity may or may not translate to an actual prize. As the magazine notes, "Noticeably missing from the winner's prize package is a guaranteed contract from a top modeling agency, as offered on the CW's America's Next Top Model, the most popular TV modeling competition in the world; instead, London-based Take 2 Model Management has agreed to 'consider' representing the winner." Judge Marie O'Riordan told the magazine, "Disabled girls are sick of being excluded from society. This show tries to shake the industry up a bit." But she also said, "I don't think there's suddenly going to be a flood of disabled girls modeling." David Merkel submits: Ugh. I’m still not home yet, but after my recent 48-hour news blackout, the news on Fannie (FNM) and Freddie (FRE) is pretty amazing. Now, I would not be so certain that an interpretation of SFAS 140 would force Fannie or Freddie to raise capital — GAAP accounting often has little to do with regulatory capital rules. Only if OFHEO decides to mimic the treatment in GAAP would it force capital-raising, absent any net worth covenants on their debt that might be poorly written. All that said, the problems with Fannie and Freddie are not primarily accounting-driven, but are being driven by diminishing housing prices, which erodes their margin of safety on their lending and loan guarantees and diminishes the value of the mortgage insurance that they rely on for some of their business. Writedowns from these items are what hurt . It is likely that Fannie and Freddie need to raise capital, but the great questions are how much is needed, and how much can the market stomach?
