http://www.wmexperts.com/articles/l...on_your_mo.html "On Wednesday we brought news of Microsoft's Live Mesh cloud-based storage service, giving you 5 gigs of space for your files to come and go as you please. Today, the big M unleashed Mobile-optimized access to the service, meaning you can get to your data while you're on the run. It's not the full-on Windows Mobile client we're hoping for, but it's certainly a step in the right direction. If you're already signed up for the tech preview, point your favorite Mobile browser (yes, even the iPhone's) at https://m.mesh.com - note the secure site - and have at it." Not to get ones hopes up but this is not the speculated Mobile client that will make transferring data from the cloud to your handset as easy as pie. However, what this Web application does, it does pretty well. Signing into the service you can browse through your Live folders and even download files that are in there. At the time of posting this I was unable to test downloading any other filetypes besides images so I am unsure if you could download a Zip archive or EXE file to your handset but if you wanted to get some images from your desktop computer to your handset and did not want to deal with the hassle of pulling out your USB cable and syncing, I would suggest giving Live Mesh a try. ...

In front of a standing-room only crowd, Om Malik , founder of GigaOmni Media, kicked off an afternoon panel pitting Mobile versus Web and did his best to dig up the details everyone wanted to hear from the likes of Nokia ( NYSE: NOK ), MySpace, Facebook and Skydeck. Neither MySpace or Facebook would disclose the exact number of users or traffic they're seeing on Mobile, but both said it's an incredibly important area of growth for social networking. -- As a developer how do you decide whether to focus on building a browser-based or native application? In an ideal world, developers would be able to decide what's best based on what they'd like to achieve with their application, said Jason Devitt , CEO of Skydeck. "The reality in the marketplace … is that developers are usually facing a whole other set of criteria." Partly because third-party browsers weren't as pervasive as they are today, most of the development growth has been on the application side, he said. Mike Baker , VP and head of Nokia's interactive group, said recent internal metrics show that the browser is really starting to take off. Brandon Lucas , senior director of Mobile business development at MySpace, concurred. WAP will be the most ubiquitous offering for the foreseeable future, particularly for low- to mid-tier devices, but "there's just a lot you can't do in WAP." There's no way to integrate a WAP site with a device's address book, camera or location-based se ...

The Mobile Web is not only for people with a smartphone, according to Opera Software’s State of the Mobile Web report, released today. Six out of the most popular phones models for Web browsing with Opera Mini are from Nokia, two are from Sony Ericsson, one is from BlackBerry, and one is from Samsung. In the United States, nine of the top 10 phones for Opera Mini are BlackBerries. The report can be viewed in its entirety here . “People want the Web on their phone regardless of the type of phone they have,” said Jon von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera. “Our list of top phones shows both smartphones and feature phones, which is a testament to the versatility Opera Mini provides. Additionally, it proves that given the right experience, many more people will use the Web on their phone. Accessing the Web on your phone is not a luxury limited to who has the most expensive phone model.” Other highlights from the State of the Mobile Web, June 2008 report: Usage continues to grow as more consumers find value in accessing full Web content on their Mobile phones. People using Opera Mini viewed more than 3.2 billion pages in June, up 9.4% over May. Opera Mini drives carrier and operator value. In June, Opera Mini users generated more than 46.7 million MB of data for operators worldwide. Because Opera Mini compresses data up to 85%, this actual amount of data requested was 311 million MB in June. As the world’s most popular Web browser for Mobile phones, Op ...
