Taiwanese electronics maker Giga-byte Technology has teamed up with Mobile phone service provider Chunghwa Telecom to launch the M528 Mobile Internet device in August, a Giga-byte representative said. The M528 is a small, handheld device with a 4.8-inch touchscreen that runs a Linux OS and uses an 800MHz  Intel Centrino Atom microprocessor  as its calculating engine. It's part of a new breed of handheld devices the PC industry hopes will catch on as a way for people to surf the Web from just about anywhere. What makes it different from a Mobile phone is its larger screen. The biggest Mobile phone screens, even when the entire face is used, still top out at around three inches. The M528 will be packaged with 3G (third-generation telephony) service from Chunghwa Telecom when it launches in Taiwan, for HSDPA/HSUPA (High Speed Downlink/Uplink Packet Access) Web surfing. The device can also access the Web via Wi-Fi 802.11b/g. The Giga-byte representative said the price of the handheld hasn't yet been determined since it will be bundled with a 3G contract. The hardware may be priced lower to entice users to sign up for Chunghwa's service. The M528 weighs just 340 grams and is 152 millimeters by 80mm by 22.5mm. It has a Qwerty keypad with a backlight that slides out from underneath so people can use their thumbs to type messages or Web addresses. The handheld is built for multimedia. It comes with a 4GB SSD (solid state drive) to store mu ...

For years research has focused on ways to allow remote access via standard communication networks to unique or expensive structures. With the growth of the Internet, one finds more and more devices connected to it. Despite the fact that one may spy on other people with hundreds of cameras, it is currently possible to interact only with a few robots, which often have restricted access. To use a camera over the web, the user usually just sits and watches or sometimes has the ability to choose different camera orientation/views. With a robot, you have strong interaction. For instance, with a Mobile robot equipped with an arm you can move along the floor and grasp objects. Discovering the control interface, the user has to understand rapidly the goal of the site and what the possibilities of the robot are in order to achieve them. The article analyses one year of netsurfer behavior regarding the use of KhepOnTheWeb, which was realized to demonstrate some possibilities of remote control of a Khepera Mobile robot. After one year of access, we performed an analysis of the log files in order to understand the behavior of the public facing such an installation. This analysis was rather difficult because of the large amount of data involved, and specific software was developed in order to extract and present the relevant information. The goal of the project is presented, the hardware and software components of our robot installation are describe ...

The US is one confused wireless market. By some measures, the US lags behind Europe and Asia in the Mobile industry, by other measures, the US is tops. Case in point, Mobile Internet usage. Dean Bubley submits: This article about H3G Austria implementing a "direct tunnel" for data caught my eye today. It fits into an emerging theme I've been seeing about the need to offload Mobile data traffic from transiting core network elements unnecessarily. Given that some stats suggest that 95% of all 3G data is going to/from the Internet, it makes sense to "dump" as much of it straight onto a connection to the web rather than routing it through expensive (and capacity-limited) core nodes like SGSNs that add no value. I heard much the same story about femtocells last week, and I've also heard it mentioned about UMA-type WiFi services, sometimes called "Split tunnel architecture". It makes particular sense for roaming data traffic from PCs, for which there is zero value in backhauling via the home network (and especially for H3G, which doesn't charge data roaming fees to on-net customers). Nielsen is out with a new report which brings together TV, Internet and Mobile usage together for U.S. households. They found that Americans are watching more than 127 hours a month of television programming. Could the higher gas prices and food prices be a factor in this increase? Average Internet usage was up 9% to 26 hours a month. New metrics in the report include 2 hours of Internet video per month on average and 3 hours of Mobile video for users who are subscribed to a Mobile video plan. The interesting chart is below - this is a breakdown of the above stats by age group. Teens who are subscribed to a Mobile video plan are viewing over 5 hours of Mobile video a month. For Internet users we see a bell curve with those in the 35-44 age bracket using the Internet the highest amount. But look at those 65+, they are using the Internet over 26 hours on average. I've said many times that the 65+ market is one to consider as you think about creating a startup. I know it's cool and hip to make a Twitter or FriendFeed, but there are other groups to consider - and many of those groups have money to spend and aren't demanding free. Contrary to popular opinion, Americans do love the Mobile web and use it in spades. The U.S. takes the top nod on Mobile Internet penetration among subscribers in 16 countries, according to a new report by Nielsen Mobile (PDF) .The firm found that 15.6 percent of U.S. wireless subscribers use the Internet on their Mobile devices. The U.K. follows just behind at 12.9 percent while Italy took the third spot at an 11.9 percent penetration rate. "In the 16 countries we looked at, the U.S. is tops in terms of penetration and I would say that surprises me at this point," said Nic Covey, the firm's director of insights. Some other interesting findings: -- The average customer pays $11 a month for Mobile web, up from an average of $9.22 a year ago. -- In May, at least 40 million wireless subscribers accessed the Internet from Mobile device, however that's still less than half the 95 million customers who already pay for access to the service in one form or another. Covey: "We've seen this trend for a while now … We don't see that so much from other Mobile media types." -- Top devices for accessing the Mobile web in the U.S.: Motorola ( NYSE: MOT ) RAZR/RAZR2 (10 percent), Apple ( NSDQ: AAPL ) iPhone (4 percent), RIM ( NSDQ: RIMM ) BlackBerry 8100 series (2 percent), RIM BlackBerry 8800 series (2 percent) and Motorola Q series (2 percent). -- Top Mobile web devices in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden and U.K.: Nokia ( NYSE: NOK ) N95 ...
