A 12-mile stretch of the Mississippi River is closed this morning after a tugboat collided with an tanker, causing thousands of barrels of diesel oil on a barge to spill into the waterway. No injuries were reported in the crash, according to Coast Guard Petty Officer Jaclyn Young. But morning commuters in the French Quarter and other parts of the city should expect a heavy smell of fuel in the air. Residents in Algiers, Gretna, St. Bernard Parish and Plaquemines Parish are also being asked to conserve water, as water intakes for those communities were closed to prevent contamination of the drinking water supply. The water flowing through the tap is from reserve supplies, which could run in many areas out by afternoon or early evening, officials said. The spill did not affect the east bank water system. ... Nearly 30 miles of the Mississippi River from New Orleans southward could be closed for days after a fuel barge and a tanker collided, spilling more than 400,000 gallons of fuel oil, the U.S. Coast Guard said. The Coast Guard closed the stretch Wednesday after early morning collision, deploying tens of thousands of feet of inflatable booms to contain the spill, said Petty Officer Thomas Blue, a Coast Guard spokesman. The river is a major shipping route between the Midwest and the Gulf of Mexico. More than 30 ships already were queued up along the river early Wednesday afternoon, waiting to pass through the closed zone, Coast Guard Petty Officer Jaclyn Young said. The accident left a sheen of oil over much of the river and its banks, and skimmers have been deployed to suck the oil off the river's surface, Blue said. However, the spill is much smaller than the ones that followed Hurricane Katrina in 2005, when the Coast Guard estimated that more than 7 million gallons of oil were dumped into the Mississippi and nearby waterways. The collision between the Liberian-flagged chemical tanker Tintomara and the barge pushed by the tug Mel Oliver happened about 1:30 a.m. CT (2:30 a.m. ET) Wednesday, splitting the barge nearly in half and dumping more than 419,000 gallons of oil into the river, the Coast Guard said. ...
