DRAFT PICK: Kevin Love, F, 6-9, UCLA. Uniquely-skilled big man was the best center at the NBA Summer League and his play there earned him an invitation to practice against the U.S. Olympic team the next week there. A sore Achilles' tendon injured near the end of summer league play kept him from participating. ...

Minnesota made a move on Draft Night we will not be able to fairly and accurately evaluate until at least two or three years down the road. Kevin Love has some very nice skills (outlet passing chief among them) but not a whole lot of athleticism. Mike Miller was a nice veteran pickup but would probably be better suited for a more veteran team. Al Jefferson played solid basketball last season, ... ---Quote--- *Minnesota Timberwolves What went right:* Al Jefferson's a beast and what's not to (Kevin) Love? Kevin McHale's greatest moment as an NBA executive came back in 1995 when he gambled and drafted Kevin Garnett, who became an All-Star for more than a decade. Garnett is an NBA champion now, albeit with Boston, and will be a Hall of Famer soon enough. But what gets McHale out of bed these days is the opportunity to work with two new Minnesota big men. First there's Jefferson, one of just four 20-10 guys in the league and a dominating low-post scorer. Then there's Love, a feisty rookie from UCLA who sees the floor and loves to pass. Thos are skills that got McHale into the shrine in Springfield. Love is delighted to be working with both former Celtics, and Jefferson is happy to have more help up front. They signed their key free agents. No one is going to argue that Sebastian Telfair, Ryan Gomes and Craig Smith are the keys to this or any other kingdom. But for a team that has been selling rebuilding, softly at first and then infomerical hard last season, keeping the pieces together is vital. Telfair resuscitated his flagging young NBA career last season, Gomes is a "glue'' guy who can help any team, and Smith has added some small-forward skills to his previously burly game. *What went wrong:* Point guard still is a problem. It's Randy Foye or bust, to a large extent. The Timberwolves were encouraged by their overall play (14-25) ...

It was a very positive off-season for the Wolves. Kevin McHale has definitely taken his share of abuse over the years for the deals he’s made. But I would have to give him a passing grade for his work this off-season. This time last year, the Wolves were inundated with the unfavorable contracts of guys like [...] ...

In the PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS, Phil Jasner reports "the 76ers have agreed to terms with unrestricted free agent forward Donyell Marshall on a minimum salary contract, the Daily News has learned. The Sixers have had interest in Marshall, 35, for many weeks, but bided their time while he remained under contract to Oklahoma City. When the franchise waived him in a buyout situation, the Sixers - in search of a perimeter shooter - made contact.Marshall, from Reading, Pa., was the No. 4 overall pick in the 1994 draft, selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves. He has appeared in 932 games over his career, including 15 games with the then-SuperSonics and 11 with the Cavaliers. He has also logged time with the Golden State Warriors, the Utah Jazz and the Toronto Raptors. Playing for the Raptors against the Sixers on April 13, 2005, he tied a league record by hitting 12 three-pointers.” ...

By Brian C. Mooney, Globe Staff MINNEAPOLIS -- As Republicans gathered in St. Paul to get their convention on track today, thousands of devotees of Ron Paul, the Texas congressman who lost a bid for the GOP presidential nomination and became an irritant to John McCain , held an all-day counter convention across the Mississippi River. Democrats and Republicans alike were verbally abused by speakers at the "Rally for the Republic" at the Target Center, the home of the Minnesota Timberwolves of the NBA. The irregular band of libertarian-leaning activists heard author Bill Kauffman say "there are a lot more of us than there are Dick Cheneys, and he knows it, that's why he sleeps in his bunker." Thomas Woods, an author and professor, derided the major party candidates as "McBama," and Doug Wead, an author-historian, who worked in the White House of the first President Bush, declared: "I say to the Republicans across the river, come home, come back. This is where you started, these are your roots. Join the campaign for liberty." Wead received a standing ovation from the several thousand in the arena. Commentator Sean Hannity may be the darling of the right, but when he appeared twice on a video clip after the Fox News Channel presidential debate early this year, he was roundly booed both times by the assemblage. Besides Paul, who is to address his supporters tonight, scheduled speakers included from Grover Norquist, president of Americans fo ...

The Philadelphia 76ers added veteran free-agent forward Donyell Marshall on Tuesday. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. "Donyell Marshall has proven time and time again his value as a player in this league," said Sixers general manager Ed Stefanski. "We believe his ability to stretch defenses with his perimeter shooting will prove to be a great asset for our team and we look forward to having him back home in Philadelphia." The 35-year-old Marshall, who was born in nearby Reading, Pennsylvania, averaged 3.8 points and 2.9 rebounds per game last season, which he split between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Seattle SuperSonics. The 6-foot-9, 245- pound Connecticut product, drafted fourth overall in 1994 by Minnesota, has averaged 11.4 points and 6.8 rebounds per game over 13 seasons with the Timberwolves, Golden State Warriors, Utah Jazz, Chicago Bulls, Toronto Raptors, Cavaliers and Sonics. Marshall will also add playoff experience to the young Sixers. He has averaged 7.3 points and 4.5 rebounds in 41 career postseason contests. Marshall started last season with Cleveland before being packaged in a three- team trade to Seattle in February. Seattle, now Oklahoma City, waived Marshall on August 20. His acquisition likely caps a busy offseason for the Sixers, who added power forward Elton Brand, and re-signed swingman Andre Iguodala and guard Lou Williams. ...

Philadelphia 76ers President and General Manager Ed Stefanski announced today that the team has signed free-agent forward Donyell Marshall. Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed. “Donyell Marshall has proven time and time again his value as a player in this league,” Stefanski said. “We believe his ability to stretch defenses with his perimeter shooting will prove to be a great asset for our team and we look forward to having him back home in Philadelphia .” Marshall (6-9, 245) has played for seven teams during his 14 NBA seasons, averaging 11.4 points (43.5% FGs, 34.8% 3FGs, 73.3% FTs), 6.8 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 0.90 blocks in 932 games with 422 starts. He has also appeared in 41 career playoff games, averaging 7.3 points and 4.5 rebounds in 20.3 minutes per game. In a game for the Toronto Raptors against the Sixers on Mar. 13, 2005, Marshall tied the NBA single-game record for most 3-pointers made with 12. The native of Reading , Pa. was the fourth overall pick in the 1994 NBA Draft by Minnesota following his junior season at the University of Connecticut in which he was named a consensus All-America First Team selection and Big East Conference Player of the Year. Midway through his rookie season, the Timberwolves traded Marshall to the Golden State Warriors, where he would s ...
