The Milwaukee Mile has cash-flow problems, but it's not going away, the president and ceo of the track said Thursday.  Claude Napier spoke in response to a complaint from Jon McAlpine, the chairman of Jani-King, a cleaning contractor, that his franchisee hasn't been paid for work at the track. Napier acknowledged that Jani-King and other contractors had not been paid, but promised all creditors will be paid by the end of this month or early November. Asked if the Milwaukee Mile was in danger of going out of business, Napier said no. "It's an unfortunate business situation," Napier said of the Mile's cash-flow problems. "Nobody is in any danger of losing money." Napier said the Mile enjoyed good attendance during the racing season, but was hit hard by the loss of sponsorship revenue. He said approximately seven sponsors, including MillerCoors, Time Warner Cable, AT&T and Potawatomi Bingo & Casino pulled out, Napier said. "We would have been profitable if it hadn't been for the loss of sponsorship revenue," he said. ...

Ted Lilly came close to following Carlos Zambrano's no-hitter with one of his own. Lilly pitched no-hit ball until Mark Loretta's seventh-inning single, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Astros 6-1 Monday to sweep a two-game series moved from Houston by Hurricane Ike. With Milwaukee abuzz over the Brewers' decision to fire manager Ned Yost, the Cubs finished off the two-game stand at Miller Park, filled with Cubs fans who made the 90-Mile trek from Chicago. ...

Two Japanese firms are building a solar power system to augment the diesel engines aboard a cargo ship that carries new Toyotas to America, a fuel-saving move that makes solar panels on a Prius look like a drop in the bucket. Slapping photovoltaic cells on a 60,000-ton boat will cut fuel consumption by 6.5 percent, which seems paltry until you realize the average cargo ship burns 120 gallons per Mile . The system Nippon Yusen KK is paying Nippon Oil Corp. $1.4 million to develop will save about 46,800 gallons of fuel carrying all those cars 6,000 miles from Japan to Califonia. To put that in perspective, if you bought a Toyota that arrived on a solar ship with 4,999 other cars, it would have saved nine gallons of fuel before you ever even saw it. But solar ships do more than save fuel. They also clear the air. Cargo ships burn " bunker fuel ," the truly nasty stuff that literally comes from the bottom of the barrel. It's kind of like the Milwaukee's Best of fossil fuels. A study published in Environmental Science and Technology found emissions from the bunker fuel cargo ships burn may cause 60,000 deaths worldwide. Subsequent research found ship exhaust contributed as much as 44 percent of the sulphate found in fine particulate matter in the atmosphere of coastal California. Anything that cuts the amount of bunker fuel ships burn is nothing to sneeze at. Nippon Yusen, Japan's largest shipping line, says the solar assist will cut CO ...

Organizers of  Briggs & Al's Run for Children's Hospital are taking one step back and one large leap forward with the 31st edition of the popular run set for Saturday morning. The start line returns to its original location on W. Wisconsin Ave., near N. 12th St., taking runners back to that swooping, fast first Mile past the Milwaukee Library the Grand Avenue Mall and to the Mark Di Suvero sculpture. "Once you get to Prospect Ave., it will be business as usual," said John Cornell, now in his second year as the race director. The start line had been moved a block north, to W. Wells St., in recent years because of the streetscaping along Wisconsin Ave.  Participants in the 8K run and the various walk events will all finish at the Henry Maier Festival Grounds, then spill inside for music and refreshments. The big leap forward this year, disposable timing chips for scoring, should ease the congestion at the finish. Runners have the option of securing a timing chip as part of their registration, a first for one of the largest runs in the state. "We want to get this race back to the prominent level it used to have," Cornell said, explaining the motivation for adding the new technology. ...

Brooklyn's, a west side restaurant that Milwaukee officials are touting as an alternative to fast food, will have its granding opening at 11:30 a.m. today, Sept. 5, at 4610 W. Fond du Lac Ave. Milwaukee Ald. Willie C. Wade issued a statement praising the restaurant for opening in the Sherman Park neighborhood, "giving the residents of this area more food choices." This summer, plans for a fried-chicken restaurant at 1635 W. North Ave. drew opposition from neighbors. Two fried-chicken restaurants already exist within a 10-block radius there. In Los Angeles, the city council in July put a one-year moratorium on new fast-food restaurants in a 32-square-Mile area of the city. According to city officials, Fruit Ranch has plans to open in the same building, where it previously had a store. It would offer fruits, vegetables and deli foods. ...

Six games didn't get off the ground without the assistance of rising tides today, thanks to enough moisture across these United States to make you think Tammy Faye Bakker herself had been disinterred by her own post-mortem weeping. Division races from the AL Central to the NL Central (oh, and the NL East, too) shut down for a forced sabbatical. Hopes stay strong that Friday's tilts can be squeegeed off in time for use Saturday or Sunday, but we may be looking at a lot of 160- and 161-game seasons when all has been totaled. • Have You Looked in the Bottom of that Ark?: When they did bother to play last night, they didn't bother to play well. Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Boston, and Texas took St. Louis, Kansas City, Toronto, and Oakland behind the metropolitan woodshed last night for blowout beatdowns. Apparently, everyone would have rather been in Milwaukee last night. Can't say that often. • Noah, How Long Can You Tread Water?: When they did battle for a division crown, they did so to a standstill. The Dodgers took out Mile high flood insurance with three runs in the ninth for a 7-2 win in Denver. James Loney sent three men home without supper and Chad Billingsley did his darnedest to create separation in our minds from the A Christmas Story kid with a decent pitching effort in the thin air. However, we're sure someone very old turned in a very clutch performance by handing out Gatorade between innings or some such. Go old people! The ...
