On the August 3 edition of CBS' Face the Nation, host Bob Schieffer alleged that "[Sen. Barack] Obama's people are trying to denigrate the war hero's Military Service," referring to Sen. John McCain. Schieffer did not explain which of "Obama's people" he was talking about, but on the July 31 edition of CBS' Early Show, when asked "what is it about John McCain that he [Obama] would attack," Schieffer responded, "[w]ell, I mean, they've already tried this, there's no question about that," adding that "[retired Gen.] Wesley Clark, who was speaking for Obama, tried to marginalize John McCain's Military Service" during a June 29 appearance on Face the Nation. Schieffer cited no other examples of the Obama campaign "attack[ing]" McCain. However, as Media Matters for America has repeatedly noted , during his Face the Nation appearance, Clark did not "denigrate" McCain's "Military Service." Rather, as Zachary Roth wrote at the Columbia Journalism Review 's Campaign Desk blog, Clark "questioned the relevance of McCain's combat experience as a qualification to be president of the United States." McCain himself has previously said he does not "accept the notion" that Military experience is necessary to be an effective commander in chief. As the blog Think Progress noted , in an interview published in the February 13, 2003, edition of the National Journal , Kirk Victor asked McCain, "Do you think that Military Service inherently makes somebody ...

Retired Gen. Wesley Clark wasn’t wrong in noting how John McCain’s Military Service does not automatically qualify him to be commander in chief, but he sounded disrespectful of that Service in saying on CBS’s “Face the Nation” that he doesn’t think “riding in a fighter plane and getting shot down is a qualification to be [...] ...

Clark blasts McCain's Military Service - Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com/s/politico/20080629/pl_politico/11425) Gen. Wesley Clark, acting as a surrogate for Barack Obama’s campaign, invoked John McCain’s Military Service against him in one of the more personal attacks on the Republican presidential nominee this election cycle. Clark said that McCain lacked the executive experience necessary to be president, calling him “untested and untried” on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” And in saying so, he took a few swipes at McCain’s Military Service. *“He has been a voice on the Senate Armed Services Committee. And he has traveled all over the world. But he hasn't held executive responsibility. That large squadron in the Navy that he commanded — that wasn't a wartime squadron,” Clark said. * *“I don’t think getting in a fighter plane and getting shot down is a qualification to become president.”* :nm: Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman (I-Conn.), also on CBS, was equally uncharitable towards Obama’s record on foreign policy as he continued to distance himself from his former party. “Sen. Obama, unfortunately, like a lot of the Democratic leadership, continues to take a position that we ought to withdraw ... even though the new policy is working,” said Lieberman. “If we had done what Sen. Obama asked us to do for the last couple of years, today Iran and Al Qaeda would be in control of Iraq. It would be a terrible defeat for us and our allies in the Middle Ea ...

Filed under: Indians , AL Central I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Shin-Soo Choo has more on his mind than most 26-year-old big leaguers. As a native of South Korean, he's obligated to spend two years serving in his home country's Military, and he must begin his Service by 2010. From Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer (via Walkoff Walk ): "I try not to think about it," he said before the Indians' 14-11 loss to the Angels on Wednesday. [...] Choo says Korean athletes can get excused from Military Service if they do well in the Olympics. "If you win any kind of medal in the Olympics, you might only have to serve four weeks," said Choo. Choo's problem is South Korea won't take baseball players for its Olympic team if they're on the 25-man roster of a big-league club. "The Indians couldn't send me to the minors [to be on the Korean team] because I'm out of options," said Choo, who added "There's too much stress to worry about it now." Choo is obviously trying to downplay what it's like having this hanging over his head, but I'm sure it has to be stressful. The irony is that no one actually pays attention to Olympic baseball, which, as things currently stand, is scheduled to be dropped from the Olympics after Beijing. If South Korea really wanted to reward athletes for bringing positive attention to their country, you'd think that Choo's big league success would be considered.   Permalink  |  Email this  |  Linking Bl ...
