Sitting in the back seat, the blue-blooded Swedish aristocrat and the decorated French hero of two world wars had begun to relax from the tension of the journey as the big Chrysler, the last of a three-car convoy, started its final ascent up the narrow road through the now Jewish-occupied district of Katamon, towards Rehavia and the house of the Jerusalem Military governor. No one in the first car, a DeSoto, least of all the Israeli captain assigned to escort the VIPs, showed much concern when a new-looking Israeli army jeep slewed across the road to bring the convoy to a halt: just another temporary Checkpoint. As three soldiers in standard Israel Defence Forces khaki shorts, fingers on triggers, approached the DeSoto; the three young Swedes and a Belgian in the passenger seats, groped for their papers. "It's OK boys," the Israeli officer explained. "Let us pass. It's the UN mediator." ...

VIDEO - Iraq, Baghdad/Sadr City – After the failure of many security plans proposed by the Iraqi government and US Military strategists, a recent plan, hand-in-hand with the so-called "Surge," was designed. It was a desperate attempt by the US and Iraqi Military forces to control the Sunni-Shia militia. At the suggestion of Military leaders, the Iraqi and US governments decided to build walls to separate neighborhoods and to control militias and insurgents from entering or exiting any neighborhood without passing a Checkpoint. The first wall was built in Adhamiya, in April 2007. Despite protests and opposition, United States Military and Iraqi National Guard forces began to erect a wall surrounding the neighborhood of Adhamiya. The people living in the neighborhood engaged in several demonstrations against building the wall, and even Prime Minister Maliki, a Shi'a critical of the neighborhood, publicly protested the plan. Despite his intervention and public discontent, the wall was built and finished by late April 2007. These walls tend to be approximately 3 meters in height and made from concrete. In some areas the top of the wall is covered with concertina wire to prevent intruders from climbing over the wall. There are patrols set to guard the wall and they are present around the wall daily, and at all hours, to protract the wall from being attacked or bombed by insurgents. Another wall built at end of April 2007, but this time in A ...

A gigantic truck bomb has destroyed the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad, Pakistan , killing at least 40 people including one member of the US Military. A massive truck bomb destroyed much of Islamabad’s most popular hotel this evening, killing at least 40 people, wounding at least 100 and leaving a crater more than 25 feet deep. Officials feared the death toll would increase by dozens as rescue teams continue work at the scene. At approximately 8 p.m. local time, an apparent suicide bomber blew himself up as his vehicle was being checked at the security gate of the luxury Marriott Hotel. The bomb was felt as far as 15 miles away. Within 500 feet of the blast, buildings and trees were shredded by the bomb, which was believed to be the biggest in Islamabad’s history. In the minutes after the blast, dozens of dead bodies littered what used to be the lobby of the hotel. Between the entrance and the security Checkpoint, about 50 feet away, there were mounds of rubble under which more dead are feared to be buried. At least one member of the U.S. miltary was missing at the scene of the blast and presumed dead. Other U.S. Military members eating at the hotel’s restaurant sustained non-life-threatening injuries. ...

A Georgian police officer was killed Wednesday by gunfire that came from the direction of a Russian Checkpoint near separatist South Ossetia, Interior Ministry officials said. It was not immediately clear who opened fire, but the shooting appeared certain to add to high tensions between Georgia and Moscow, whose forces continue to occupy its neighbor's territory in the wake of last month's five-day war. The policeman, who was at a Georgian Checkpoint about a kilometer (half a mile) from the Russian post, died in hospital, Interior Ministry official Shota Utiashvili said. The Georgians did not return fire, he said. Georgia's private Rustavi-2 television reported that Russian officers at the Checkpoint at Karaleti, on the main road leading to the Russian-backed separatist province of South Ossetia, said they did not fire. The report suggested, without citing sources, that South Ossetian gunmen might have been the source of the gunfire. Since the war in early August, Russia has recognized South Ossetia and another breakaway province, Abkhazia, as independent nations and has deployed forces at checkpoints and Military positions in what it calls security zones ringing the two regions. Russia has pledged to withdraw its forces from those zones within a month, after unarmed European Union observers are deployed, but said Tuesday that it would maintain 7,600 troops in South Ossetia and Abkhazia for the foreseeable future. Russian forces w ...

A 16-year-old boy wearing a suicide bomber jacket and carrying a hand grenade was arrested Monday in an army cantonment area in Pakistan's troubled northwest, police said. Senior police officer Akhtar Ali Shah said the youth was taken into custody Monday morning about 30 miles east of Peshawar, site of a suicide bombing Saturday that killed 35 people. "Swift action by the police yielded the arrest of the boy, who was brought into the cantonment area by accomplices who are being traced," Shah said. He said the boy was being interrogated by a joint team of senior investigators from the police and security agencies. He would not speculate on the possible target but said the army's supply corps is located in the area. In recent weeks, the Pakistani Taliban have said they were to blame for a string of suicide bombings in revenge for Military offensives in the northwest region that borders Afghanistan. One attack killed nearly 70 people at a major weapons factory. A Taliban spokesman claimed responsibility for Saturday's suicide attack on a police Checkpoint on the edge of Peshawar, killing seven police officers and 28 other people. He speculated the driver of the explosives-packed pickup truck feared being discovered at the Checkpoint and decided to detonate. Pakistan has struggled to contain rising militancy in its borders, and the fledgling government has tried both peace talks and Military operations to stop the insurgents. ...

European Union monitors began patrolling Georgian territory Wednesday under a French-brokered peace deal, facing a Russian Military that seemed reluctant to retreat. The Russian peacekeeping forces said a day earlier they will not immediately allow any of the 300 EU monitors to enter a buffer zone surrounding the separatist South Ossetia region. The statement raised a fresh concern that Moscow was stalling on compliance with a cease-fire agreement reached after the August war with Georgia. But when a group of EU observers arrived at a Russian Checkpoint near the village of Kvenatkotsa at the perimeter of Russia's so-called "security zone" on Georgian territory, Russians quickly let them enter the area. The Russian soldiers didn't allow reporters to follow the observers into the buffer zone, but let Georgian civilians pass after examining their vehicles. A small white dog barked at passing cars, and a handful of Russian troops at the Checkpoint looked relaxed. "The situation is very calm," Ivan Kukushkin, a Russian officer in charge of the Checkpoint said. Another group of EU monitors also visited the village of Odisi in a different sector just outside South Ossetia. EU mission head Hansjoerg Haber told reporters the Russian Military had earlier warned the EU monitors from entering the buffer zone, citing concerns for their security. "We received different signals," Haber told reporters. "We want to clarify these differences in the ...

Russian forces will begin withdrawing from a buffer zone in Georgia on Wednesday and be out within 24 hours. The head of Russian peacekeeping troops based in South Ossetia, Gen. Marat Kulakhmetov, made the announcement Tuesday at their base in the regional capital, Tskhinvali. Kulakhmetov did not specifically mention the troops remaining outside Abkhazia, another separatist region. Russia must pull out its troops from areas surrounding South Ossetia and Abkhazia by Friday under agreements brokered by French President Nicolas Sarkozy. Russia left troops in the areas after they routed Georgian forces during a war in August. Russian forces have been packing up and dismantling posts outside South Ossetia and Abkhazia in recent days in preparation for the withdrawal. At a Russian Checkpoint near the Georgian village of Kvenatkotsa, about a dozen Russian Military vehicles were parked on a hillside Tuesday ready to go. ...

WASHINGTON: An incident in which Pakistani soldiers fired on helicopters with a NATO-led force Thursday along the border with Afghanistan was "an unfortunate misunderstanding," a Pentagon spokesman said Thursday. The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said its helicopters were conducting routine operations inside Afghanistan when they came under small arms fire from a Pakistani Checkpoint along the border near Tanai distict in eastern Khost province. "It appears to be an unfortunate misunderstanding," said Bryan Whitman, a Pentagon spokesman. He said the US Military "contacted the Pakistani Military immediately after the incident from what I understand and they are working to ensure that the coordination measures are such that that doesn''t happen in the future," he said. The shooting has come amid heightened tensions along the border in the stepped up stepped up US missile strikes and a reported raid into Pakistan earlier this month by special operations forces. Pakistan''s President Asif Ali Zardari has said that Pakistan would not tolerate violations of its sovereignty. ...

Pakistani forces Thursday fired at U.S. helicopters and traded shots with U.S. troops and Afghan police on the Afghan-Pakistan border in the latest blow to cooperation between Washington and Islamabad, U.S. officials said. Neither side reported casualties in the incident, which occurred when the helicopters crossed into the Pakistani tribal agency of North Waziristan, the Pakistan army said. In New York, Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari said that Pakistani soldiers only fired "flares" to demarcate the mountainous border for the helicopter pilots. "Sometimes the border in so mixed that they don't realize they have crossed the border," he told reporters as he sat down to talks with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Rice agreed that the border "is very, very unclear." According to the U.S. Military, Pakistani troops in a hillside border Checkpoint fired at two U.S. OH-58 Kiowa reconnaissance helicopters providing cover for Afghan police and U.S. Military trainers patrolling inside the Tanai district of Khost Province. ...
