Washington, DC —In response to an abrupt suspension of the Military Spouse Career Advancement Account program, Congressman Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan, along with other members of the Congressional Military Family Caucus, have asked Defense Secretary Robert Gates to restore it. Congress provided for the program in the National Defense Authorization Act last year. Unofficially referred to as Spouse Tuition Assistance, it makes available up to $6,000 of aid to Military spouses who are pursuing degree programs, licenses, or credentials leading to employment in high-demand, high-growth, and portable careers they can pursue wherever the Military may send their families. “Over 130,000 Military spouses are receiving this education help,” says Sablan. “I understand that those who are approved will continue to receive payment. But in my view suspending the program and creating this uncertainty is not the way to support those who sacrifice so much to make our Military what it is today.” Those eligible include spouses of active duty service members, of activated members of the National Guard and Reserve Components, and of those severely injured, wounded, killed in action, prisoners of war, or missing in action. The Military Family Caucus has heard from many Military spouses who are directly impacted by this program termination. They worry there may be a delay in the completion of their degrees – possibly without the opportunity to finish o ...

Earlier this week Henry Farrell posted a link to Charlemagne’s discussion of Greek social spending commitments. Long story short, it’s not simply a question of the Greek people being lazy or the Greek state being profligate; the high degree of public sector spending was designed to paper over serious rifts in the Greek political community: Real, live Germans are not heartless ants, and the Greeks are not broke because they are giddy crickets who sing their summers away. Greece is a grown-up country with grown-up problems: rough, tough politics, and a lot of recent history, not all of it very nice. And it is precisely that recent history, and rough politics, that are at the core of Greece’s fiscal woes today. Take the painful question of the huge public sector, and all those civil servants with jobs for life, and unusually generous retirement packages. The existence of those jobs for life is not a cultural quirk, in which Greek officials simply like coffee and backgammon too much to do any work. It is the end result of a brutal, multi-decade power struggle between the left and the right: a struggle that got people killed within living memory. Read the whole thing, etc. Another cause with Greek deficits, however, appears to be Greece’s high level of defense spending : Greece’s serious financial troubles are going to affect their Military spending. Yhe highest in the European Union and second in NATO only to the United States, the Greek ... Source: www.dailypress.com --- 1 hour ago

Seibertron.com has received a copy of some emails relating to a wardrobe modelling gig for Transformes 3 Quote: Our friend鈥檚 two e-mails listed the 'casting call' first as an unidentified movie, but then the second seemed to be made more specific, directly stating it was for Transformers 3 . His theory for the second e-mail with the ACTUAL movie listing-- not enough folks responded with interest toward the first e-mail--. Now, unfortunately it seems the parts the actors were to play were simply to model wardrobe and such for the movie for pictures, but it was stated that each actor would be seen by the director, so 鈥榶ou鈥 may have had a chance to parlay this into something more. The response for this event has closed, and it was supposed to actually be 'performed' on THURSDAY. However, it is good to know that things are moving forward and that we do have a few clues about the human element of the movie: more Military men of all ethnicities, 18-35 years old. Another interesting note though is that they listed a separate 'casting call' for Military men who are also of Iranian/Middle Eastern descent. ...

When 89 year-old Bee Haydu stepped into the captain's seat of an Air Tran 717 aircraft she calmly said "I've got one in." Haydu's experienced hands gripped the yoke of the 717 but it wasn't the first time she sat behind the controls. Haydu is one of 300 surviving WASP members or Women Airforce Service Pilots. These women flew Military aircraft domestically during World War II in order to free male pilots for active duty. She was flown to the ceremony and given a tour of the Airtran plane by an all woman flight team as a curtousey from the company in honor of her service. WASP members were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal at a ceremony in Washington DC today. Watch video clips of Bee below and read Elizabeth Prann's blog to learn more about this group of pilots. ...

Iran: US is playing 'double game' in Afghanistan, fighting militants it once supported: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad used a brief visit to Afghanistan on Wednesday to lob insults at the United States and argue that international forces won't stop terrorism and will only lead to more civilian deaths. Ahmadinejad said the United States was playing a "double game" in Afghanistan, fighting militants it once supported. His comments were a retort to U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates who earlier in the week accused Tehran of "playing a double game" by nurturing relations with the Afghan government while supporting insurgents to undermine U.S. and NATO troops. Tehran denies the allegation. Ahmadinejad threw back the phrase Wednesday. "I believe that they themselves," who are now fighting militants in Afghanistan, "are playing a double game," said Ahmadinejad, who has made several visits to the country. "They themselves created terrorists and now they're saying that they are fighting terrorists." Get more news, information, and analysis on Iran at Mere Rhetoric's full Iran coverage page ...
