When he moved troops into disputed South Ossetia, the young leader adored by Washington put his nation in a precarious position. Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, a U.S.-trained attorney regarded by Washington as a pro-democracy wunderkind, has made a political career of brinkmanship with neighboring Russia. This time, he may have overplayed his hand. ...

It's been hard to miss the besieged leader on U.S. news shows, railing about Russia's invasion of his country. He is the leader of a small country that was, until recently, not on the radar for most Americans. But it's been hard to turn on a news channel this month without encountering the angry, brooding glare of Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, railing against the Russian troops pouring across his country's borders, doing his best to turn a military disaster into a media victory. ...

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has openly accused the United States of supporting Georgia. U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney has warned that “Russian aggression must not go unanswered.” At the same time, Washington accused Moscow of trying to overthrow the regime of Mikheil Saakashvili in Georgia. Kommersant has learned that Moscow is indeed pressing for the ouster of the Georgian president. The Russian Foreign Ministry has officially refused to carry on a dialog with him and, as Russian permanent representative to NATO Dmitry Rogozin told Kommersant, Moscow intends to demand that a special tribunal be set up, before which Saakashvili will stand as the chief defendant. The main peacekeeper should be France, as Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and French President Nicolas Sarkozy agreed in a telephone conversation yesterday. Sarkozy is expected to meet with Medvedev today and then fly to Tbilisi to talk to Saakashvili. ...

As a supplement to yesterday’s news round-up on Georgia , I thought I’d post on a comment at The Washington Post , where Paul J. Saunders discusses the role of President Saakashvili in the Georgian conflict. Saunders is executive director of the Nixon Center. ( WaPo ) He also served as senior adviser to the undersecretary of state for democracy and global affairs from 2003 to 2005. ( WaPo ) In thinking through the ramifications of the Georgian conflict, it’s probably important not to buy into the view of Georgia as the innocent victim of an unprovoked aggressor. To put it gently, Saakashvili’s imprudent decision to use force to subdue tensions in South Ossetia, and the surprise attack he launched, was the spark that set the kindling tensions on fire. That Russia’s response has been opportunistic, disproportionate, expansionist, and wrong in every respect, the fact that Georgia has suffered doesn’t mean that the Georgian president is necessarily free from fault. The people of Georgia who have endured the brutal consequences of the invasion are innocent; but is their president? One can certainly censure the Russian government for their response without giving Saakashvili a pass if it’s determined that he played a role in bringing the situation about. But hearing Bush and McCain tell the story, you’d almost think that Russia had invaded without provocation. That is not necessarily the case. While the facts seem to indicate that Russ ...

Updated at 9:40 p.m. ET Fox is pulling out all the stops to try to make John McCain look presidential and worldly in the face of the conflict in Georgia. As a matter of fact, one would think he is the president. Over the course of three segments on the issue today (August 12, 2008) on Your World w/Neil Cavuto, George Bush was mentioned only once, in passing, in a negative way. But, one wonders if they're stretching the truth, ah, just a bit. Don't get me wrong. I'm just sayin' that this sounds mighty suspicious: Carl Cameron interviewed John McCain at a campaign stop in York, Pennsylvania today. Appearing on Your World, he gave the audience a taste of what they discussed (I got the impression a long interview would be broadcast later on Fox, though neither Cameron nor Cavuto said when). This is part of what Cameron said: "Senator McCain actually talked to president Saakashvili [Georgia's president] every day since the invasion by Russia into Georgia took place. He calls the Georgia president a friend. Says he's known him for 25 years, ah, calls him Misha, the nickname of Mikheil." Mikheil "Misha" Saakashvili is 41 years old . That would mean that John McCain claims to have known Saakashvili since Saakashvili was 16? No doubt crack reporter Campaign Carl found this "fact" to be odd and at some point in the as yet unseen interview he asked McCain to elaborate and explain how this relationship came to be. After all, Fox wouldn't wan ...

... the old Cold War animosities that existed between the US and her western allies and the Russians still linger on long after what most people believed was an end to the Cold War in 1991. As the War on Terrorism replaced the Cold War as a vehicle for US imperialism in its projection of hegemony into a resources-rich region of our world, so some of those resentments have re-emerged as the new political battles for increasingly diminishing resources intensify. The old East-West polarisations of the post-Second World War are actually beginning to replicate themselves almost as it was in the Cold War days. The all-important difference this time, however, is the new places where the East meets the West – and Georgia is one of those places. - Damian Lataan, August 12, 2008 People in South Ossetia and Georgia have suffered the double horror of being attacked, maimed and killed in a conflict unleashed by new post-Cold War instabilities, and then being marshalled like political ghosts in a morality tale that is likely to make things worse. - Brendan O’Neill The 'international community' learned an answer to a big question and achieved more of its desired instability. But as Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini observed yesterday, "This war has pushed Georgia further away ... from Europe. We cannot create an anti-Russia coalition in Europe, and on this point we are close to Putin's position." So what will be the next move in new Great ...
