The Stars had their first scrimmage, and while it was revved up and ended with excitement, it really was difficult to draw much out of it. While Stars coach Dave Tippett had a pretty good skeleton framework of possible NHL lines in practice on Friday, he did not keep them together on Saturday. Brenden Morrow and Jere Lehtinen spent some time with Colton Sceviour at center, while Mike Ribeiro had Jamie Benn and Lauri Tukonen as sometimes linematers. Mike Modano was on the left wing the whole scrimmage and he did skate on a line with Sean Avery, but he was centered most of the time by Aaron Gagnon and not Brad Richards. Richards spent time with James Neal and Loui Eriksson _ an interesting experiment for the second line, but not something we expect to see on opening night. And Fabian Brunnstrom skated at times with Toby Petersen, something that actually could materialize early in the season. ... Source: starsblog.dallasnews.com --- 16 days ago
The dream of the undefeated preseason goes up in smoke, as the Stars lose a penalty-filled game at St. Louis. St. Louis goes 2-for-9 on the power play. The Stars were 1-for-7. The Blues had the better lineup, as Paul Kariya and Erik Johnson were the only two big names out of the lineup (and Johnson is out 6-9 months with a knee injury). The Stars were without: Marty Turco, Brenden Morrow, Jere Lehtinen, Mike Modano, Mike Ribeiro, Sergei Zubov (hip), Stephane Robidas and Philippe Boucher (toe). Tobias Stephan allowed three goals on 17 shots in two periods to take the loss. Matt Climie stopped four shots in relief. Dallas was able to muster only 17 shots on goal. Former Texas Tornado goalie Ben Bishop got the win in his first game for the Blues. Stars forward Francis Wathier was boarded in the first period and left the game. No update on him right now. Matt Niskanen and Trevor Daley each logged 25 minutes, while Brad Richards led the forwards with 21:38 in ice time. He had three shots on goal and an assist. Loui Eriksson and Sean Avery scored for the Stars, who will return to Frisco for practice on Wednesday and then play the Avalanche Thursday at AAC. ... The Stars will divide up the veterans tomorrow when they scrimmage at 11:15 a.m. in Frisco, but they had all of the veterans together today on the first day of camp, and they had some interesting combinations. Mike Modano was playing left wing on a line with Brad Richards and Sean Avery. Stars coach Dave Tippett appears ready to give this combination a good tryout in the preseason _ and it is definitely something worth watching. First of all, it moves Modano out of his checking line role and gives him the excitement of playing in the top six. Second, it gives Richards the chance to establish some chemistry with a couple of players who could help his game. Richards was solid for the Stars in the playoffs last season, but he never really was able to find linemates that stuck. Tippett seems intent on giving this line a chance to build chemistry. With Modano moving up, Tippett had Steve Ott-Joel Lundqvist-Loui Eriksson in the checking line slot. Lundqvist has been a center for most of his career, so this will be a good test. The fourth line was Toby Petersen centering Krys Barch and B.J. Crombeen. My guess is players such as Fabian Brunnstrom and James Neal will get a chance with Petersen at different times during the preseason. With Sergei Zubov (hip surgery) and Philippe Boucher (toe) out, the D-pairs were: Nicklas Grossman-Stephane Robidas Mark Fistric-Trevor Daley Dan Jancevski-Matt Niskanen It was a revved up start, and the Stars rea ...

The Stars sent five players to their respective teams and released three others to get the roster down to 35 today. They will probably chop it again after Saturday's preseason game, getting it near 30 before heading off on a road trip to Chicago and Colorado. Assigned today: AHL: Trevor Ludwig is going to Manitoba (which is great for him at this stage, as he thought he might be going to Idaho), and Tyler Shelast will go to Hamilton. ECHL: John Lammers (Idaho) Europe: Lauri Tukonen (Tampere, Finland) Juniors: Jamie Benn (Kelowna). The Stars released G Joey Perricone, D Nolan Pratt and D Matt Stephenson. With Pratt gone, it looks like the seventh defenseman spot will go to Dan Jancevski, Garrett Stafford, Maxime Fortunas or Ivan Vishnevskiy (probably not really in the mix, because he probably needs some AHL time). That might be the most interesting race in the next five preseason games as someone will stay up with Sergei Zubov (hip) out. They practiced in two groups today. One of the lines to watch for tomorrow night's home preseason game against St. Louis is Mike Modano-Brad Richards-Jere Lehtinen. The Blues will also get a glimpse of the Loui Eriksson-Steve Ott-B.J. Crombeen line that scored five goals in the intrasquad scrimmage the other day. . ... Source: starsblog.dallasnews.com --- 4 days ago
It's 2-2, thanks to a power play goal from Stephane Robidas. Crombeen drew a roughing penalty from Sheldon Souray to start the man advantage, and the Stars power play put a tic-tac-toe play together. Mike Modano found Loui Eriksson in the slot, and Eriksson one-touched a pass to Robidas, who was sneaking in from the point. The Stars needed that. They looked reallly flat. ... They fall to 1-4-0 in the preseason. It sounded as if they were the better team, but couldn't take advantage of special teams. Dallas was 0-for-4 on the power play with eight shots, while Coloradoo went 1-for-3 with two shots. Matt Climie was in goal for Dallas, and allowed three goals on 28 shots. Peter Budaj led Colorado, allowing one goal on 30 shots. Steve Ott scored for the Stars. Ryan Smyth, David Jones and T.J. Hensick for the Avs. Brenden Morrow, Marty Turco, Nicklas Grossman, Krys Barch and Toby Petersen sat out, so the Stars iced a decent lineup. Philippe Boucher (toe) is skating and should join the team in practice tomorrow for the morning skate (He might play Sunday). Sergei Zubov (hip) still is out. Jere Lehtinen had six shots on goal. Stephane Robidas had five. Mike Modano had four shots on goal, playing on a line with Lehtinen. Modano also won 11-of-18 face-offs, as he was back at the center position. No panic yet for the record, but it would be nice if they could play well in one of these last two pre-season games at home. You will see something closer to the normal lineup in these two games. ...
