Notre Dame sustained a tough loss when tight end John Carlson—the strapping, athletic and mature leader of the '07 Irish—moved on to the NFL. Two weeks of pre-season practice and an impressive debut with the media corps Friday showed that freshman Kyle Rudolph could slide ride into the big shoes left by the former Irish captain, and fill the gap created by the injury to Mike Ragone ...

The Seahawks will have just one practice this afternoon and I'll provide an update later on today. Seattle Seahawks Frank Hughes focuses today on Seahawks running back Justin Forsett and the chances of the smallish runner on making the team. Forsett works out regularly during the summer with another back who works low to the ground – Jacksonville’s Maurice Jones-Drew. Here’s a feature on tight end John Carlson and his ascension to a starting role by Gregg Bell of the Associated Press. Bell also writes that Seattle head coach Mike Holmgren has no intentions of going away meekly in his final season as a head coach. Seahawks secondary coach Jim Mora handed out DVD’s to each of his defensive backs with highlights of plays they could have performed better on, according to Scott Johnson of the Everett Herald. The players use the critiques to get better during the offseaon. => Read more! ...

Speaking of celebrity , the Obama campaign sent out this interesting comparison of Sen. John McCain and Britney Spears: Britney Spears (CNN, 10/30/03): Carlson: A lot of entertainers have come out against the war in Iraq. Have you? SPEARS: Honestly, I think we should just trust our president in every decision that he makes and we should just support that, you know, and be faithful in what happens. Carlson: Do you trust this president? SPEARS: Yes, I do.   John McCain (The Mike Gallgher Show, March 2008) "No one has supported President Bush on Iraq more than I have."   John McCain (MSNBC, 8/20/06): GREGORY: Do you have confidence in the President and his national security team to lead the war at this stage? MCCAIN: I do. I do. I have confidence in the President, and I believe that he is well aware of the severity of the situation.   ...

Barack Obama remarked yesterday to an audience that FOX News gave a lot of play to Jerome Corsi after he published a lie-riddled book intended to "swift-boat" the Senator, and the Friends took offense. Mike Huckabee joined them the first hour to condemn the remark, Howard Wolfson expressed similar sentiments the second hour, and both were revisited in the third hour this morning 8/21/08. With video. Gretchen Carlson said (twice) that Obama "ripped" them about that "number one New York Times bestseller in non-fiction ," (failing, of course! to note that it's number one "with a dagger" which we've learned means " some bookstores report receiving bulk orders," which would obviously artifically inflate the popularity of a new release. Apparently this is another tried and true "conservative" dirty trick.) Oh well lookie here - Politico.com, the source for much of FOX "reporting," says "Obama rips Fox News," and proceeds to grossly underplay the spotlight the network has put on the author and his lies; "The news network has interviewed Corsi." Steve Doocy, reiterating the number oneness of the book (without revealing how it got there) protested that Corsi was challenged by Bob Beckel in two F&F appearances, and has appeared on other networks, including C-Span and CNN. Perhaps Obama singled out FOX because Corsi has had so many repeat appearances and so many unopposed opportunities to defend and further his lies. Perhaps it was because ...

Position: Tight End Projected Starter: Mike Ragone (sophomore) or Will Yeatman (junior) Backup(s): Luke Schmidt (junior), Kyle Rudolph (freshman), Joseph Fauria (freshman) 2008 Outlook:  While it looks to be a battle for the starting position at tight end between sophomore Mike Ragone and junior Will Yeatman (right), both will see significant playing time in 2008.   Ragone played as a true freshman and forced himself into the #3 role in 2007 while Yeatman was the second option behind John Carlson.   So naturally it would look like Yeatman would be the starter with Ragone backing him up but with the suspension of Yeatman in spring practice due to a DUI in January, Ragone has just as good of a shot to be the starter on September 6 th .   Ragone is not nearly as big as Yeatman but figures to be a much better target in the passing game.   Yeatman’s strength is his size and power and figures to become the top blocking tight end for the Irish.   Both players have a lot of talent and should give new Irish playcaller Mike Haywood some nice options for starting quarterback Jimmy Clausen.   Luke Schmidt looks to make the full-time switch from fullback to tight end this season and figures to push both Ragone and Yeatman for playing time.   The junior has battled some injuries in his first two years and is finally playing healthy at a position he can succeed in.   He gives the Irish a little bit of both receiving ability and blocking ability and ...

Mike Gundy is still a man, but he's no longer 40. The Oklahoma State football coach turned 41 on Tuesday. That tidbit aside, it's unlikely that Gundy will ever be able to escape his infamous "Come after me ... I'm a man! I'm 40!" rant that became a YouTube sensation last September following the Cowboys' 49-45 victory over Texas Tech. Even a casual viewer of ESPN's SportsCenter recognizes that there's an incredible shelf life on those press conference rants as they get rehashed after each subsequent meltdown. Even though he'd rather forget, Gundy is obviously aware of the stir he created when he publicly railed on a local newspaper columnist. Gundy felt that an opinion piece by Jenni Carlson of The Oklahoman inaccurately portrayed former Oklahoma State quarterback Bobby Reid, who was being benched in favor of Zac Robinson, and let everyone know exactly how he felt. While being introduced for his session with print media at last month's Big 12 Conference media days, Gundy was asked by the moderator if he'd like to make any opening comments before taking questions. "I've been pretty popular guy over the last year," Gundy said. "I don't know how many opening comments I need to make." Despite the popularity of the video clip, Gundy said he didn't actual see it on YouTube.com until someone showed it to him last January. "I'm not a big computer guy," Gundy said. "I've not once in my life been on YouTube. I don't know how to get on it. " ...

In its latest Web video, Republican John McCain 's presidential campaign has elevated Democratic rival Barack Obama  to a messiah-like figure. That's quite a big step up from a superficial, Britney Spears -type celebrity, which is how McCain's team portrayed Obama in their earlier "Celeb" ad . The new McCain video mocks Obama as "The One." Meanwhile, the Democratic National Committee is sending around an e-mail that suggest, on the Iraq war at least, McCain is the presidential candidate who sounds most like the troubled singer Spears: Britney Spears: Carlson: A lot of entertainers have come out against the war in Iraq. Have you? SPEARS: Honestly, I think we should just trust our president in every decision that he makes and we should just support that, you know, and be faithful in what happens. Carlson: Do you trust this president? SPEARS: Yes, I do. Carlson: Excellent. [CNN, 10/30/03] John McCain: McCain: "No One Has Supported President Bush on Iraq More Than I Have." During an March 2008 interview on The Mike Gallagher Show , McCain stated, "no one has supported President Bush on Iraq more than I have." [Think Progress blog, 4/2/08] John McCain: GREGORY: Do you have confidence in the President and his national security team to lead the war at this stage? MCCAIN: I do. I do. I have confidence in the President, and I believe that he is well aware of the severity of the situation. [MSNBC, 8/20/06] PREVIOUSLY ON McCAIN CENTRAL . . . NYT e ...

Let's take a last look at the big ones that face the Seahawks coaching staff tonight and tomorrow morning when the coaches convene to decide whom to cut and who will make up the 53-man roster: QB On the team: Matt Hasselbeck, Seneca Wallace, Charlie Frye The decision: None WR On the team: Nate Burleson, Jordan Kent, Bobby Engram, Deion Branch, Courtney Taylor. The decision: Keep Logan Payne, now that Ben Obomanu is out with a broken clavicle? Or go with seven receivers and keep Michael Bumpus, too? TE On the team: Jeb Putzier, Will Heller, John Carlson The decision: Waive Joe Newton? Likely, but he could come back for another year on the practice squad. RB On the team: Maurice Morris, Julius Jones, Owen Schmitt, Leonard Weaver, T.J. Duckett The decision: Keep Justin Forsett, who fumbled twice in the last two games but still had a big second game and runs with so much purpose? My guess is that he will make the team. Also, what to do with David Kirtman, who didn't do anything in the exhibition season to hurt his chances? OL On the team: Walter Jones, Rob Sims, Mike Wahle, Ray Willis, Sean Locklear, Chris Spencer, Floyd Womack, Steve Vallos, Mansfield Wrotto. The decision: If the Seahawks keep one more, who will it be? Four penalties on Pat Murray might have sealed his fate. DL On the team: Patrick Kerney, Brandon Mebane, Rocky Bernard, Lawrence Jackson, Darryl Tapp, Craig Terrill, Howard Green, Red Bryant. The decision: Jason Babin or Bar ...
