Things played out particularly well with the Hawks earning the franchise rsquo s first postseason berth in nearly a decade with Bibby piloting the ship. But he struggled in the series against Boston something that he shook off immediately after that Game 7 loss but has not forgotten. 8220 I think we definitely could have beaten them 8221 Bibby said. 8220 We just didn rsquo t play well on the road at all and I mean at all. But things happen for a reason. Maybe that was the start for us to excel this ... ...

NBA training camps have begun; the season is rapidly approaching. Can you dig it? I knew that you could. And so we begin our previews: 30 of them in 30 days. Let's begin with everyone's secret favorite: The Atlanta Hawks. When last we saw them: Finished 37-45, third in the Southeast Division and eighth overall in the East. Lost in seven games in the first round to the eventual NBA champions, the Boston Celtics. Key Arrivals: Mo Evans, Othello Hunter, Randolph Morris Key Departures: Josh Childress The Good: They retained the services of Josh Smith, their second leading scorer, after Smith signed a $58 million offer sheet to play with the Memphis Grizzlies. They have a strong starting five of Mike Bibby, Joe Johnson, Marvin Williams, Smith and Al Horford. The acquisitions of Hunter and Morris will improve their frontcourt depth. Bibby will have the benefit of a full training camp, which should lead to improved chemistry with his teammates, especially backcourt partner Joe Johnson. They're a good fast break team that likes to crash the offensive glass. Confidence is high after the way they pushed the Celtics to the limit in the first round of last year's playoffs. The Bad: Josh Childress flew the coup in order to hoop it up in Greece. They tend to be inconsistent on the offensive end because they rely so heavily on streaky jump shooting (Johnson, their leading scorer, was 43 percent from the field in 2007-08). Weak three-point shoot ...

Oct 3rd Training Camp Notes There is already an open DataReader associated with this Connection which must be closed first. Here are some of the stories floating around the NBA after training camps started earlier this week. Preseason games get going this weekend, so cross your fingers that your favorites stay healthy. Click here to buy the 2008 Rotoworld Fantasy Basketball Draft Guide. Atlanta Hawks Marvin Williams' 3-point shooting is living up to the early hype and coach Mike Woodson says he expects Marvin to score about 18 ppg. We've been calling him a sleeper for awhile now and nothing has changed. I also think Mike Bibby is primed for big things because he's finally healthy again. He was never 100 percent last year. Maurice Evans will be the first man off the bench and should fill the role filled by Josh Childress last season. Sleeper alert on Evans. Boston Celtics Kendrick Perkins' shoulder is not near 100 percent and I've got some concerns about him being able to play night after night this season. Patrick O'Bryant is his back up and is at least worth keeping an eye on as the season approaches. Darius Miles continues his comeback bid but will start the season on the suspended list - 10 games for violating the drug policy. Charlotte Bobcats Larry Brown is serious about starting Sean May at PF and I actually took him late in a deep draft recently. I don't expect him to stay healthy, but he should be a solid value pick if he can ...

Filed under: Hawks , Suns , Interviews Thanks to the good folks in the Phoenix Suns' communications department, I was courtside for the team's pre-season opener against the Hawks. Being the first game of the pre-season, it was mostly just local media in attendance, who apparently had no interest in Hawks' coach Mike Woodson 's post-game remarks. When he came out of the locker room, it was just me, esteemed writer for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Sekou Smith , and a media rep for the Suns that were waiting for him. Needless to say, it was the perfect opportunity to ask the coach a few questions about the game (and frankly, it would have been weird if I didn't.) Here are coach Woodson's (very brief) post-game comments: Q: You left Marvin [Williams] out there longer than usual, were you just trying to get him more work? Mike Woodson : I was trying to get him more work, and I knew I wasn't going to play Joe [Smith] and [Mike] Bibby many minutes, so, you gotta have one of those guys on the floor, Marvin, or Josh Smith to go along with the new guys. But Mo [ Maurice Evans ], Mo would have taken up seven or eight minute that Marvin got coming down the stretch probably, if he hadn't gotten hurt. Q: What happened to Mo? MW: He got an elbow (points to above his eye), he needed to get some stitches. Brett Edwards: The first half it seemed like you guys took a lot of outside shots, which maybe lead to the low field goal percentage? MW: Wh ...

Filed under: Clippers , Heat , Timberwolves , Warriors Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel (via Peninsula is Mightier ) reports resolution in the odyssey to find Shaun Livingston an NBA home. Livingston will apparently sign a two-year contract with Miami , and expects to play later this season. If it seems Livingston has received a ton of press considering the low likelihood he'll be a difference-maker this season, it's because he has. But that's all owed to the remarkable potential he showed in spurts through the 2006-07 season with the Clippers. He's young, skilled and dynamic. Why wouldn't folks place a small bet on him? That's what the Heat have done here. If he can help this year, all the bigger reason for Miami to reel him in. The Heat currently have Chris Quinn , Mario Chalmers and Marcus Banks at the point. Quinn and Banks could be acceptable back-ups and last-string starters. Chalmers is a rookie who might be a very poor man's Mike Bibby someday. None of these guys, at this point, could be starters on a contending team. Livingston doesn't meet that threshold either, but he has the potential to in the near future if he recovers decently. With little on the line, it's a good acquisition. And in few other locales (Golden State, New York) will Livingston have a bigger opportunity to earn minutes than in Miami.   Permalink  |  Email this  |  Linking Blogs  |  Comments ...

Optimistic season preview by FanHouse "Now, as we look to the Sacramento Kings, things start to get a bit more interesting. Sac-to has a budding star in Kevin Martin, a veteran, versatile big in Brad Miller, and a couple more quality starters in Beno Udrih and Francisco Garcia. Mikki Moore, the fifth starter, is definitely serviceable. This team won 38 games in the West a season ago, and with the distractions named Mike Bibby and Ron Artest compeltely out of the picture, could the Kings make a run at the eight seed? I think they can, but a lot would have to go right for them." ...

Hollinger's 08-09 Player Projections - Martin #26 2008-09 outlook: Martin is 25, he's improved every year, and he's about to take on a much larger offensive role (um, right Reggie?) now that Artest and Mike Bibby have been traded. All signs point to a big scoring year from Martin, and given how efficient he's been percentage-wise it could translate into his first-ever All-Star appearance. ...
