Updated 5:07 p.m. By Juliet Eilperin KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- This morning Sen. John McCain's (R-Ariz.) spokeswoman Jill Hazelbaker said Sen. Barack Obama's (D-Ill.) upcoming trip to Europe and the Mideast amounted to a "first-of-its-kind campaign rally overseas." When asked about Hazelbaker's comments on his campaign bus this afternoon, McCain offered a more charitable interpretation of his opponent's foreign trip. "I can only give you my opinion, and I will talk to her," McCain said. "The fact is that I'm glad he is going to Iraq. I am glad he is going to Afghanistan. It's long, long overdue if you want to lead this nation." "What I'm saying is how can someone go before the American people and ask to be their Commander in chief if you've never been to the place where, in his words, a major conflict exists," he added. "That is remarkable." In a press conference with ...

clipped by: blueridge clipper's remarks: The real Obama policy. Must see video interview (at link) where Obama 1) legitimizes the "war on terrorism" (as necessary and true war); 2) escalate war in Afghanistan (regime change, like Iraq continues); 3) willing to attack targets inside Pakistan--i.e. invade any sovereign country to kill and destroy alleged 'terrorists' (think collateral damage on civilians or wrongly accused from missiles and UAV drones). Watch the interview, Obama does not answer one "why?" question of Lara Logan about the "necessity" of the "war on terrorism", he simply dodges and assumes its legitimacy without reason or debate. UNJUST WAR is the problem here. Where is the protest? The "war on terrorism" is not a true or legal constitutional war, and enabling Obama to do the same as Bush without criticism is hypocritical and partisan blindness. It has always been the goal to finish Iraq and legitimize and spread the war on terrorism.   Here's my NEWSWEEK colleague Michael Hirsh with a very astute take on Barack Obama's upcoming overseas adventure: As Obama heads to Europe and the Mideast this coming week, he is embarking on what might be called his "Ich bin ein Commander" test. It may well be the decisive one of his candidacy, especially with so many media stars--including three network anchors--along for the ride. One major reason why Obama's opponent, John McCain , has managed so far to rise above the public's grim assessment of the Republican Party is that, for many voters, he has already passed this test. Even though Americans think by a two-to-one margin Obama would do more to improve the country's image abroad than McCain, according to the new Washington Post-ABC News survey, only 48 percent said the Democrat would make a good Commander in chief compared to 72 percent for his Republican rival. And "head to head, McCain was judged as the one with greater knowledge of the world by more than 2 to 1," the Post reported. McCain has rightly hammered away at Obama's failure to visit Afghanistan at all and not to have traveled to Iraq since January 2006. That means the Democratic senator missed witnessing the sectarian violence that roiled Iraq for more a year, and he has not had a firsthand look at the surge's success even as he has continued to say he would withdraw troops within 16 months of his presidency. A new McCain campaign video shows a series of devastatin ...

*Obama defends tour, says McCain shifting on war * associated press Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama brushed aside Republican criticism of his overseas trip on Saturday and stood outside the famed 10 Downing Street to say that both President Bush and Sen. John McCain were moving his way on the key issues of Iraq and Afghanistan. Hours before flying home, Obama also suggested his poll numbers might dip in the coming days, adding: "We have been out of the country for a week. People are worried about gas prices and home foreclosures." At the same time, he said the journey to two war zones, the Mideast and Europe was important because "many of the issues that we face at home are not going to be solved as effectively unless we have strong partners abroad." Republicans have criticized Obama throughout his trip, and McCain's campaign said recently the Democrat was taking a "premature victory lap" with more than 100 days remaining in the presidential campaign. But Obama sought to turn that back on his critics. He said McCain had earlier been "telling me I was supposed to take this trip. He suggested it and thought it was a good idea." "John McCain has visited every one of these countries post-primary that I have," he said. "So it doesn't strike me that we have done anything different than the McCain campaign has done, which is to recognize that part of the job of the next president, Commander in chief is to forge effective relati ...

Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama toured Israel's Holocaust memorial Wednesday, laying a wreath in memory of the 6 million Jews who died and saying, "Ultimately, this is a place of hope." Obama toured the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial on a Jerusalem hillside as he moved through a busy day of meetings with Israeli and Palestinian officials, including Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. A senior Palestinian official said Obama assured Palestinian leaders he will get involved in the Mideast conflict quickly if elected president. The Democratic nominee-in-waiting is on a tour of the Mideast and Europe, a journey financed by his campaign and designed to reassure skeptical voters back home of his ability to serve as Commander in chief and guide diplomacy after eight years of the Bush administration. Obama drew an unusually warm welcome from Israeli President Shimon Peres, who said his greatest wish is for a "great president of the United States. That is the greatest promise for us and the rest of the world." ...

BANGKOK, Thailand _ Oil prices climbed to $142 a barrel Tuesday amid concerns about tensions between Iran and Israel and a weakening dollar. You have supply-side concerns, such as the rhetoric on Iran, that will likely keep a floor under prices, said Victor Shum, an analyst with Purvin & Gertz in Singapore. I don`t see much resistance to $150, which could happen in the coming weeks.Late afternoon in Singapore, light, sweet crude for August delivery was up $2.00 at $142.00 a barrel in Asian electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. On Monday, the contract soared to a record $143.67 a barrel. It later fell back to close at $140.00 on reports of weakening U.S. oil demand and end-of-the-quarter profit-taking by traders.Oil also rose on expectations the European Central Bank will likely raise interest rates at its next meeting on Thursday, a move that would help strengthen the euro against the dollar, Shum said.As the dollar has weakened, investors have been piling into oil contracts, betting that they will gain, thereby offsetting the dollar`s decline. Since the start of the year, crude has shot up nearly 50 per cent. The dollar fell to 105.44 yen from 106.10 yen late Monday, while the euro rose to $1.5771 from $1.5757.Traders were still anxious about tension in the Mideast after the Commander of Iran`s Revolutionary Guards warned that if his country is attacked, Tehran would strike back by barraging Israel with missiles and tha ...

An Iranian F-14A Tomcat Iran has revamped its fighter jet fleet to fly distance of 3,000 kilometers without refueling, an Iranian Air Force Commander says. Brigadier General Ahmad Miqani said Sunday that the measure was taken to improve the country’s defensive capabilities. He, however, did not specify the warplanes types. The report comes after an Israeli long-range air drill in early June that is believed to have been a dress rehearsal for an attack on Iranian nuclear facilities. Despite the UN nuclear watchdog declaration that Iran enriches uranium to 3 percent, a rate consistent with the development of a nuclear power plant, Israel and the US continue to accuse Iran, a signatory of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), of pursuing military nuclear program. The two staunch allies have threatened to launch military strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites should the country continue uranium enrichment. Tehran has warned that Israel and 32 US bases in the region will be targeted should the country come under attack. Although Brig. Gen. Miqani did not elaborate on the process, it has been suggested that external fuel tanks attached to the wings or fuselage can provide the extra fuel. The achievement comes after Iran announced in July that it started producing radar-evading stealth aircrafts as well as overhauling F-14 fighter jets.
