Middle Eastern countries are being forced to choose between food and water, The New York Times reports : For decades nations in [the Middle East and North Africa] have drained aquifers, sucked the salt from seawater and diverted the mighty Nile to make the deserts bloom. But those projects were so costly and used so much water that it remained far more practical to import food than to produce it. Today, some countries import 90 percent or more of their staples. Now, the worldwide food crisis is making many countries in this politically volatile region rethink that math. It's yet another perfect storm in global resource scarcity. But what stands out about this crisis is how it was borne out of these countries' desire for self-sufficiency. Their plans seem to be the stuff of quasi-utopian fantasies: turning arid desert into lush farmland, growing enough food for a desert nation to feed itself. On the surface, such plans sound a lot like the recent calls for countries to become more resource-independent: America needs to assert its energy independence ! Africa should learn to grow its own food ! But the call for national self-sufficiency only makes sense in the cases where a country has the resources and capacity to meet its demands sustainably; for everything else, a healthy regional trade network may be the best solution. According to this logic, the Mideast food/water crisis seems like the textbook example for the law of comparati ...

"Sen. Barack Obama is visiting with leaders in Europe and the Middle East this week to 'deepen important relationships and exchange views with nations vital to the country's national security,' said a spokeswoman," reports The Christian Science Monitor . "In short, Senator Obama will seek to repair friendships that have frayed in the past seven years. It won't be easy, especially in the Middle East, where a thick coat of skepticism and cynicism has dulled the reflection of American aspirations." Malou Innocent, Cato foreign policy analyst, comments : "On his trip to America's war zones, Sen. Barack Obama again argued that the fight against Al Qaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan is America's most crucial theater in the war on terror.  Consequently, he supports sending two or three more combat brigades to the country to counter a sharp rise in violence.  Obama also continues to state that the Iraq war was a profound strategic miscalculation. The trip is meant to improve the image of his foreign policy expertise.  Experience is a relevant concern, but one should remember that President George W. Bush led one of the most experienced foreign policy teams in U.S. history.  That experience did not prevent abysmal policy failures, including the diversion of military resources away from the campaign against the militants who attacked us on 9/11 to a country that posed no imminent threat at all.  In contrast to Senator John McCain, who adv ...

Every aspect of Barack Obama's visit to Palestine-Israel this week has seemed designed to further appease pro-Israel groups. Typically for an American aspirant to high office, he visited the Israeli Holocaust memorial and the Western Wall. He met the full spectrum of Israeli Jewish (though not Israeli Arab) political leaders. He traveled to the Israeli Jewish town of Sderot, which until last month's ceasefire, frequently experienced rockets from the Gaza Strip. However, Ali Abunimah comments, Palestinians received very little of the Senator's attention. ...
