NBC NEWS REPORT WASHINGTON -- A health risk may be hiding in your freezer. While microwaving a frozen dinner is no doubt fast and easy, it can be dangerous if its not done right. "In this situation we are seeing foods improperly cooked getting people sick," said Dr. John Carlo of the Dallas Health Department. The government has issued a new warning about frozen chicken dinners after 32 peple in 12 different states have gotten sick with salmonella. "Salmonella easily prevented by properly cooking food you are about to eat," said Dr. Carlo. Health officials are specifically warning about breaded or pre-browned chicken breasts while they may appear to be precooked some are actually raw. "I assumed fully cooked before they were frozen quite frankly," said one shopper. And according to the experts, even precooked meals designed for the Microwave can make be unsafe if they're not heated thoroughly enough. I didn't' realize between 5 and a half and 6 and a half i've been undercooking my food for sure," said Daniele Cunningham. It's a mistake this fan of the Microwave doubts she'll make again. "I will be reading packages much more carefully," said Cunningham. Experts say the best way to make sure your chicken is safe use a thermometer to test it. Chicken should be at least 165 degrees. Microwave ovens should be equipped with safety controls to prevent children from opening them and being burned by hot foods and drinks, according to a study published today by University of Chicago Medical Center researchers in the October 2008 issue of the Journal Pediatrics. Severe scalds can be devastating for children because they can leave scars and wounds that can restrict movement. The study recommends extra protections, such as locking mechanisms and stepped-up warning campaigns, to reduce accidental injuries to children when they remove food from the Microwave. read more ... The government has issued a new warning urging consumers to thoroughly cook frozen chicken dinners after 32 people in 12 states were sickened with salmonella poisoning. "Given how people use microwaves, it's great for reheating, but maybe not so good for cooking," said Doug Powell, scientific director of the International Food Safety Network based at Kansas State University. Microwaves heat unevenly, and can leave cold spots in the food that harbor dangerous bacteria, such as E. coli, salmonella or listeria. So microwaving anything that includes raw meat, whether it's frozen or thawed, can cause problems. The government doesn't track Microwave-related food-borne illnesses, but every year more than 325,000 people are hospitalized for food-related illnesses. ... Source: www.rfglobalnet.com --- 1 day ago
