Here's how the new Zunes stacked up to Apple's now-replaced third-generation iPod Nano (middle). (Credit: Ina Fried/CNET News) With Apple's iPod announcements largely out there , I thought it made sense to see how Microsoft's new Zune lineup stacks up. The good news for Microsoft is that its Zunes are priced right in line with Apple's new iPod Nano and iPod Classic line. From either company, a 120GB hard drive player fetches $249, a 16GB flash model sells for $199, and an 8GB flash model will sell for $149. The bad news is that once again, Apple has made life harder for Microsoft--adding features like voice recording and "shake to shuffle" to the Nano. Apple's "Genius" feature, while not as expansive as the Channels feature of the Zune, also gets Apple in on the auto-recommendation game. Apple is also moving ahead on the video front, whereas the Zune didn't make any meaningful advance. The new iTunes features TV shows in HD and Apple is bringing back NBC, erasing the only real video advantage the Zune had. The new Nano has the accelerometer that's also in the iPod Touch and the iPhone. (Credit: James Martin/CNET Networks) And of course there is the iPod Touch. Microsoft has decided to ignore the Web browsing feature even though all its models have Wi-Fi. That means that at the lower end of the market Microsoft has an advantage, as all its models can now download songs over Wi-Fi. But at the high-end, Apple has a player that makes ...

Filed under: Portable Audio , Portable Video We just got ourselves blue 8GB and black 120GB Zunes , and naturally threw 'em on the table for an unboxing. With just capacity and color changes, there's not a lot to gawk at, but we've always had a soft spot for Microsoft's Zune packaging and "Welcome to the Social" greetings. According to a Wal-Mart insider (OK, employee) the 80GB and 4GB Zune SKUs have both been listed as "NRPL" in Wal-Mart's database—that's retailer shorthand for "non-replenishable." Given Microsoft's recent confirmation of a new 120GB Zune along with some other unnamed goodies, it looks like new Zunes could be coming sooner as opposed to later. Or Wal-Mart has finally found someone to manufacture a Zoon. Meanwhile, bhphotovideo.com posted a preorder of the Zune 120GB for $250 along with an 8GB Zune in blue. CNET spotted Microsoft jumping the gun today to avoid running into you know who : Microsoft has gone ahead and rolled out details the new Zune lineup we've been hearing about a day early. And it's what we've known all along: a storage bump up to 120GB for hard drive models, and an 8GB/16GB choice for flash. And the Zune 3.0 software will have the new features we've seen , including recommendations, new games (including Texas Hold 'em), and a Wi-Fi music store for downloading from hotspots with your Zune Pass (finally). Pricing is also exactly as we've reported: $250 for the 120GB, and $150/$200 for the flash, with reductions down the line for the current (as of earlier today) models. Definitely no surprises, considering some folks have already bought new 120GB Zunes . Read on for the full press release. Ahead of an expected new Apple iPod Nano launch tomorrow at an event , Microsoft ( NSDQ: MSFT ) has announced a new version of Zune, and some new interesting features. -- In the latest versions, it is expanding the hard drive-based model to 120GB and the flash-based player to 16GB, with new colors blue-on-silver and all-black color schemes. Prices: $249 for the 120GB model, $199 for the 16GB model and $149 for the 8GB flash model -- The new devices launch next week, and and older versions will get a free software upgrade. -- The more interesting part: it has added Wi-Fi to the player , where users can stream or download the songs on the go through the Zune store. With a subscription Zune Pass, at $14.99 per month, users will be able to listen to 3 million songs as long as they are within a Wi-Fi zone. -- Also, users will be able to tag and purchase songs directly from the built-in FM radio service on the player, if Wi-Fi is within range. If Wi-Fi is not available, the device will have a queue of songs ready to download when connected to a home computer or in a hot spot. -- Zune will add games: it will come with two games--Hexic and Texas Hold 'em--and adds support for audio books in the Audible format (now owned by Amazon). Zune was first with some "social" music-swapping capabilities when it first launched, but without critical mass, it went nowhere. It's a big week for people in the market for new PMPs. Today Steve Jobs hosted an event titled "Apple: Let's Rock," with the purpose of introducing upgrades and updates to the company's ever outdated stable of gadgets. This prompted Microsoft to make some announcements its own yesterday to offset Apple's inevitable post-convention bounce. So first to the Microsoft Zune device, which not only still exists, but now comes with the ability to buy music directly over the its on board wi-fi connection. Two more new features worth noting: "Buy From FM," which allows you to tag a song you hear on the radio and purchase it right away, and a new song recommendation system which allows you access to playlists pre-programmed by music biz type people. As for new models, look out for a hard-drive based 120GB model () and flash-based devices at 16GB () and 8GB () -- we'll update with pics when they're available. The "Apple: Let's Rock" stuff's more expansive. Here's a quick rundown: ...

As expected, Apple’s Let’s Rock event this morning was decidedly focused on music, with updates to iTunes, the iPod nano and the iPod touch taking center stage. Most significant change comes in the freshly-slimmed iPod nano: it’s the thinnest iPod to date, despite the 8GB and new 16GB sizes, with a curved metal and glass casing and new, longer display. Inside, Apple have borrowed the accelerometer technology from the iPhone and iPod touch to bring slick transitions from portrait to landscape mode. More details about the new iPod nano here . You can find more details, video, plus the full Live Blog transcript, after the cut The iPod touch has also lost some weight, with a new, iPhone 3G styled profile only using a stainless steel back rather than the cellphone’s plastic. Storage remains the same - 8GB, 16GB or 32GB - but the PMP gets hardware volume controls, a built-in speaker, and integrated Nike+ receiver. More details about the new iPod touch here . The iPod classic got a minor tweak, too. Gone are the 80GB and 160GB versions, replaced with a single 120GB model that coincidentally matches Microsoft’s latest HDD-based Zune in capacity and, at $249, price. iTunes v8 introduces high-definition TV shows, including content from the freshly re-woo’d NBC, and priced at $2.99 each. It also brings a new intelligent playlist system called Genius, which can analyse your current track and suggest both similar music from your library and fr ...

Either Microsoft tried to bury its Zune announcement in the Apple avalanche of hype, or the company believed it could compete with the iPod onslaught Tuesday. The much-maligned Microsoft player has some new features and higher-capacity models keep the product competitive with Apple's pricing. New Zune Too Soon According to reports circulating on the Web, Microsoft's latest Zune line was leaked by an online retailer, so the company decided to put out the news. The retailer posted the new models for sale but quickly pulled them down. Regardless of the timing, the new lineup keeps Zune marginally competitive with Apple. Joshua Martin, senior analyst for consumer products at the Yankee Group, commented, "Capacity and price point don't mean as much in this market, though. Apple has the cachet and can charge a premium for its product." The new Zunes come in 16GB and 120GB for $199 and $249. Microsoft will phase out the existing 8GB and 80GB models still in retail channels. But the big news for current and potential Zune owners is new software that allows Zune to download music directly from the Zune Marketplace over the device's Wi-Fi connection and to make "Buy from FM" purchases. Anytime during a Zune FM broadcast that utilizes Radio Data System feeds, a listener can purchase the song directly from the Marketplace. The new software also features channels developed by music-industry professionals such as Billboard and FADER magazines, and c ...

Microsoft have come clean about their Zune PMP refresh , after details of the blue 8GB flash-based version was accidentally pre-announced on Fry’s website. As expected, both the flash and HDD based Zunes will get more capacity, with a 16GB version of the former and a 120GB version of the latter. However significant changes have also been made to the software, with the most interesting being the ability to use the PMP’s built-in WiFi to download new tracks. While the Zune had WiFi before it was added to the iPod range, Apple brought their mobile iTunes download store to users first. The new Zune software will also make the PMPs compatible with the Audible audio-books, as well as introducing new playlist tools. Microsoft is planning “Zune Channels” of themed tracks - for instance “work out” music - that will be compiled by so-called experts. The PMPs will also be able to make track recommendations based on the current playing song. Two games will be preloaded, Hexic and Texas Hold ‘em. The 120GB HDD Zune will be priced at $249, the 16GB flash Zune at $199 and the 8GB flash Zune at $149. Microsoft has also confirmed that older versions will see price cuts until stock clears retail channels. Microsoft has made a point over the last few years of attempting to steal some of the thunder (and market share) from Apple each time the Cupertino company makes announcements in the world of iPods. True to form, Redmond announced refreshes to its Zune line the night before Apple's "Let's Rock" Event . So now that the dust has started to settle, how do the players compare? Check out some of the vital specs, after the jump. --Both player lines now cap out at 120GB. In Apple's case, the Classic gets the prize--the flash-based iPod Touch currently maxes out at 32GB. --The Flash-based Zunes and the iPod Nanos go head to head in terms of price and capacity: Both offer 8GB and 16GB versions for $149 and $199, respectively. --Both companies upped the recommendation ante. The Zune will make recommendations based on your listening history and offers new "expert" programmed Zune channels. The iPod, meanwhile, offers the Genius feature via iTunes 8, and now gives users the ability to make quick on-the-go playlists via a new pop-up menu --As with the iPod touch, Zune users can now download songs via built-in Wi-Fi --The Zune now ships with two new games: Hexic and Texas Hold 'em. It’s not only Apple with PMP rumors, and there’s fresh grist for the Microsoft mill with a 120GB Zune showing up for preorder, a new flash-based Zune in blue, and stock status changes for the existing models. First up, retailer B&H Photo have put up their preorder page for a 120GB Zune and an 8GB flash-based blue Zune, priced at $249.95 and $149.95 respectively. Neither of those models have been confirmed by Microsoft, and unfortunately B&H don’t have any estimated availability dates. A quick Google search by the product codes - H3A-00001 for the 120GB Zune and HVA-00030 for the 8GB blue Zune - shows that multiple retailers, including Buy.com , have both models listed. According to Provantage , the 8GB model has wireless, an FM radio, “new innovative touch controls” and “extended wireless sharing”; BLT are claiming to expect stock at their Tennessee warehouse today. Meanwhile, a WalMart employee has reported that both the 80GB and 4GB existing Zune models have had a status change in the stock system, and are now showing up as NRPL (”non-replenishable”). That basically means that the store cannot reorder any of the PMPs once its current stock runs out.
