"Follow the money" was Deepthroat's suggestion to journalist investigators in the Watergate scandal . Several decades later, that same advice helps to unravel the mystery of why Microsoft keeps upping its investment in Novell's SUSE Linux certificates...while simultaneously denouncing Linux for violating its intellectual property and generally wishing that Linux would cease to exist. As context, Microsoft and Novell today announced an expansion of their 2006 interoperability agreement, which included a controversial covenant not to sue over patent infringement. "The investment focuses on enhanced programs from Novell to provide tools, support, training and resources for customers seeking an enterprise-class Linux platform and specifically, the optimal interoperability solution between Microsoft Windows Server and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server," writes Fox Business . But it's not the interoperability provisions that anyone is going to be talking about. It's the $100 million in additional SUSE Linux certificates that Microsoft is buying. I know from friends at Novell that customers are indeed lapping these up, but not for the reasons publicly stated (patent protection (Microsoft) and interoperability (Novell). No, the primary reason is that they are cheap . With this underwriting of Linux by Microsoft, Novell is able to sell its Linux software at highly advantageous pricing. As Novell's Linux business has grown, it has been able to ...

Earlier today, Zoho sent over an intriguing email with a whole bunch of numbers and spreadsheet demonstrating why Google in particular is not likely to be a threat to the company. It makes interesting reading. The argument goes something like this: Google's revenue and Profit per employee, almost wholly derived from advertising, is so far ahead of application providers like Microsoft and SAP that it simply isn't worth Google's time or money to invest heavily in the applications part of its business. Here is how Sridhar Vembu, CEO of AdventNet, Zoho's part company describes the position: We simply don't believe Google has the rational business incentive to go deep into the business/IT software category. The lower revenue and Profit... ...

Google's Tim Armstrong talked up YouTube's Profit potential and dished a bit on Microsoft's cashback program to gin up search market share. Armstrong also declined to chat about IE 8 and the possibility that Google launched the Chrome browser to combat its privacy feature. Armstrong, speaking at the Citigroup Technology Conference in New York, had a fireside chat with Mark Mahaney. Much of Armstrong's comments were mentioned before, but here are a few highlights. YouTube can scale and be profitable. Armstrong and Google execs have been singing the YouTube Profit song for many quarters. This go-round Armstrong said YouTube is a main topic among ad agencies and that advertisers "want three things: Better brand, more traffic, more revenue. YouTube has... ...

Microsoft Corp. today announced it will offer the gaming and entertainment console, which offers the leading Xbox LIVE service, at a new low price in the United States. Beginning Sept. 5, Xbox 360 Arcade will retail for the estimated retail price of $199.99, the Xbox 360 console for $299.99 and Xbox 360 Elite for $399.99. History shows that more than 75 percent of all console sales happen after the price falls below the $200 mark. For millions of consumers who have been waiting for the perfect time to buy an Xbox 360 console, their moment has finally arrived. At $199, Xbox 360 is the most affordable next-generation console on the market, offering something for everyone with the most dynamic, interactive entertainment experiences available. A low-cost XO laptop from the One Laptop Per Child Project (OLPC) that carries both Windows and Linux will be out within the next month or so, according to an OLPC official. The  dual-boot XO laptop  was originally expected to be available in August or September. The new device will allow users to boot up the OS they prefer, either Microsoft Windows XP or the Linux-based Sugar OS originally found on the XO. [ See the related story  Amazon to sell OLPC XO laptops . And get the latest on mobile developments with InfoWorld's Mobile Report newsletter . ] The new device is important to the spread of the XO around the world. OLPC started as an attempt to build a $100 laptop and work with governments to pass them out to kids in poor nations around the world. But some governments have said they don't want the XO laptop, no matter how cheap it is, unless it has Windows. "Some countries have been adamant about using Microsoft software," said Matt Keller, OLPC's director for Europe, Middle East, and Africa, in an interview Wednesday. A high-level government official in Egypt was among the first to tell OLPC that his country only wanted the XO if it could run Windows. Now that OLPC has announced the dual-boot version of the laptop, Egypt plans to use them in schools, Keller said. There has been some disagreement at OLPC about working with Microsoft and speculators have attributed some high profile departures from the non-Profit to its decision ...

Kofi Bofah submits: I am forecasting that General Motors (GM) will be the next American icon to be unceremoniously banished from The Dow Jones Industrial Average [DJIA]. The Dow is a benchmark of 30 stocks that serve as a gauge to the performance of the overall United States stock market. These equities are a "Who's Who" of American commerce, and include such industry heavyweights as: ExxonMobil (XOM), Procter & Gamble (PG), IBM (IBM), Microsoft (MSFT), Bank of America (BAC), and 3M (MMM). Wall Street has applied valuations, or market capitalizations averaging $130 billion, for each Dow component stock. Excluding General Motors, the 29 remaining enterprises generated 2007 net incomes of $9.36 billion per issue. We shall contrast these statistics to General Motors. The Detroit automaker has been assigned a paltry market capitalization of $5.8 billion by investors and rang up a hideous $38.7 billion in 2007 losses. GM has not turned a Profit since 2004, and is the sickening albatross of the Dow 30. Complete Story » ...

Frank Rong submits: The Wall Street Journal and other media outlets have talked about the demise of the credit card industry for decades now. Yet credit card businesses are truly one of the best businesses I have ever seen. I can't find a single person in the news media positive about the credit card industry. And those people who are bearish on the credit card business simply never understand the economics of the business. The credit card industry is one of the most profitable industries in the United States with annual earnings in the $30 billion range.  Many people might be surprised to learn that a single credit card issuer -- MBNA -- earned 1.5 times more Profit than McDonald's (MCD) in 2004.  Citibank (C), another major credit card issuer, earns more Profit than both Microsoft (MSFT) and Wal-Mart (WMT). The battle for market share amongst the current generation of consoles is heating up, with the PS3 selling considerably better than it did at launch and the Wii and Xbox 360 still selling strongly. One of the biggest reasons Nintendo's console has gained such a big chunk of the market is that low price point. MS has been closing the gap in this regard and looks to go one step further with a possible price drop for the Arcade model (without a HDD) in early September. That would make the sub $200 Arcade the cheapest available console, with MS stating in the past that $199.99 is the sweet spot for console sales. Whether Microsoft will be making a Profit at that price is hard to say (revisions to the console have brought production costs down, but maybe not that considerably), as is whether that price would last if introduced. Expect solid conformation closer to the date. ...
