"Sony: We want Xbox 360 to succeed in Japan" is the eye-catching headline in Gamesindustry.biz , based on a perfectly reasonable interview with Sony's president of Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, on sister-site Eurogamer.net. He's actually saying it would be better if consumers showed more interest in next-generation gaming than the twee stuff being rolled out for the Wii: If it continues that way forever, it's not a good thing for us. But I'm saying what Microsoft is offering and what we are offering are closer, compared to what other platforms are offering. Because of that commonality, the new games coming out on 360 and PS3 help to get consumers more interested in this generation of gaming. He also recognises that "Because of the amount third-party publishers have to invest to produce a game for this generation, it's really hard for them to justify releasing on only one platform." Well, on one minority platform. Two minority platforms makes more sense. I think we can be confident that support for its rival is not the reason why Sony is failing to respond to Microsoft's price cuts on the Xbox 360, except for bundling 80GB instead of 40GB drives. The FT reports : "The answer is yes, if you're asking, 'Are these the prices we're going with this Christmas?'" said Kazuo Hirai, president and group chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment, in an interview with the Financial Times. In the US, the PS3 is now twice the price o ...

This feels like a case of identity crisis. The PlayStation 3 has been marketed so much as a Blu-ray player and home Entertainment hub that Sony Computer Entertainment head Kaz Hirai had to reaffirm that the PS3 is all about games. No, really? The thing that I did when I took over last year was to boast the appeal of games themselves... The main premise of the PS3 is video games. That's the absolutely most important thing that we cannot lose sight of. Kinda funny, since he admitted only a month ago that Sony was "a little too zealous" when they marketed the PS3 as more than a video game console. Well it's good to see that they're back on track, as evidenced by a very strong line-up of games for the holidays. Keep them coming! (Not too fast though, I'm already broke.) Ah, the Entertainment Software Ratings Board website, a wellspring of information on upcoming, yet-to-be-announced titles. Titles like Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, which has recently had two new consoles added to its listing. Joining the PlayStation 2 and the original Xbox are the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, which would seem to indicate that the title will be coming to Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network. Of course just because the ESRB rated the game doesn't mean it's a sure thing, but further proof has appeared in the NeoGAF forum thread concerning the rating showing Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 on Microsoft's PartnerNet, the closed version of Xbox Live used on development units. If Capcom can manage to get stable online multiplayer working with Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 and deliver it to PSN and Xbox Live Arcade, I will never ask for another 2D fighting game again. I promise. ESRB Watch: Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 rated for the Xbox 360/Playstation 3 (!!!) #1 [NeoGAF - Thanks David!] ...

Microsoft and digital rental provider Starz Media have formed a partnership to offer anime films, classic horror, and other popular movie categories to the Xbox Live movie rental service in Canada, UK, and Ireland. The expanded catalog will also mark the first time that titles from distributors Anchor Bay and Manga Entertainment will be included. Featured movies at launch include Re-Animator, the Masters of Horror series, Ghost In The Shell, Blood: The Last Vampire, the Hellboy Animated series, and the Stan Lee Presents series. The standard Xbox Live rental rules apply, one downloaded a title will remain active for 30 days until you press play, then you will have just 24 hours to watch the movie as many times as you like. (Note: I'm waiting for confirmation from Xbox Canada as to when the new movies will be added and will update this post when I have an answer). ...

Sony Computer Entertainment president Kaz Hirai has restated that hopeful gamers will not see a PlayStation 3 price cut this year and that the console is a "very good value proposition". "The answer is yes, if you're asking, 'Are these the prices we're going with this Christmas?'" Hirai added. "When you really compare apples to apples, then I think we have a very good value proposition." Sony's decision to not cut the price of their console for the holiday season could put them under pressure from Microsoft which has recently cut the price across the board for their rival Xbox 360 console. The current global economic downturn could also put added pressure on Sony. Hirai believes the videogame market will do just fine even with the economic downturn. "As long as we can generate excitement, then we will be less affected than other industries," he said but also added, "we're getting to the point where price becomes more important". Without dropping the price however, Sony has added more value to its PS3 line by selling an 80GB model with a free game for the same price as the currently priced 40GB model. Permalink | Comments ...

So last month I picked a pet peeve to harp on and on and on about. I wanted to know why it is we don't see more educational video games for this next-generation of consoles. Why no awesome Math Blasters or Reader Rabbits or Typing of the Deads for the Playstation 3, Wii or Xbox 360. One thing I learned is that there are a few of those out there, but I still wanted to hear from the three console holders on the top. So I emailed Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony to see their take on number of prepared questions. All of which lead to my final question: Why not give away an educational game on your console? Hit the jump to read the answers from Denise Kaigler, Nintendo of America’s vice president of Corporate Affairs; John Koller, director of hardware marketing, SCEA; and XNA General Manager Boyd Multerer. Do you think educational games are a good fit for your console either via a standard disc title or downloadable title? Kaigler The response of consumers to games like Brain Age for Nintendo DS demonstrated to the entire industry that games with an educational theme were viable. Brain Age remains a top seller, which tells us people are hungry for different kinds of Entertainment, including those that stimulate your brain. We have already seen Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree for the Wii console. Wii is a good fit for educational games because the pointing and motion-sensing abilities of the Wii Remote controller allow for more dynamic input ...

According to a new listing on the Entertainment Software Ratings Board's website (via NeoGAF ), it appears Capcom's classic crossover fighting game Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is heading to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, more than likely as a digital download over Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network. As usual, the mere appearance of a rating doesn't technically constitute as an official confirmation, but there's a bit more evidence backing this up. A couple of NeoGAF posters also relayed images of what sure seems to be Marvel vs. Capcom 2 listed on PartnerNet, Microsoft's closed version of Xbox Live used by developers to test unreleased games online. Not only does this seem to further confirm the existence of MvC2 for the 360 and PS3, but even better, it suggests it will indeed have online play. But it does leave one to wonder -- if the game is already being tested online, and if it already has an ESRB rating, why wasn't this announced at Tokyo Game Show last week? Regardless, if (when?) we get an official confirmation, we'll let you know. Keep your fingers crossed. ...
