Microsoft released its Kodu Game Lab yesterday, giving gamers everywhere the opportunity to create their very own games. Just for you, we snapped up the tool and set to work creating the Next BIg Thing in video gaming. Well, either that or we created a dinky little 2D shooter. Still, it's hard not to feel some pride after creating a real, honest-to-goodness, functioning game. And we did it all without laying a finger on a standard keyboard. Check out our video tour and see what created. The group responsible for building startup businesses inside Microsoft has lost another key executive, this time to another Microsoft division -- providing more evidence that the company has been rethinking the group's role. Xuedong "XD" Huang, a speech-technology guru, has shifted to Microsoft's Online Services Division to work on mobile search and advertising initiatives, the company confirmed. Huang had previously been general manager for Communications Innovation inside the company's Startup Business Accelerator group, overseeing areas including the Response Point small-business telephone system. The Startup Business Accelerator, under chief research and strategy officer Craig Mundie, was among the groups hit hard by the company's latest round of cuts . The MSN Direct and .Net Micro Framework teams, other parts of the startup group, were also affected by those cuts. Sanjay Parthasarathy, the corporate vice president who headed the Startup Business Accelerator, recently announced that he plans to leave in September.   Amit Mital, who heads Microsoft's "Unlimited Potential" emerging markets group, is expected to expand his duties to include oversight of the Startup Business Accelerator group when Parthasarathy leaves. The executive departures put the concept of the Startup Business Accelerator in doubt, said Matt Rosoff, an analyst with the Directions on Microsoft research firm. It appears Microsoft may be looking to make intern ...

Filed under: Features , Interviews Just a few years ago Microsoft was one of the most prolific first and third party publishers for PC games, releasing titles like the Age of Empires/Mythology series, the Microsoft Flight Simulator series, the Mechwarrior series, Freelancer , Impossible Creatures , Rise of Nations and many more. However Microsoft has been doing some cost cutting in the past 18 months as they have shut down a number of their internal PC developers such as ACES Studio and Ensemble Studios while cutting back their third party PC game publishing lineup. At the same time, Microsoft has tried to work with third party publishers on their Games For Windows marketing push for PC games, They have also tried to improve their Games For Windows Live online service which got off to a rocky start just over two years ago but has made improvements since then. Big Download got a chance to chat with Michael Wolf, the Senior Marketing Manager for Games for Windows Live, to get an update on their PC game development and publishing plans and their future plans for Games For Windows Live. Last week, Microsoft released some ads for Internet Explorer 8 that were intended to provide a "tongue-in-cheek look" at some of the new features of the browser. Unfortunately for them, there were those that weren't quite so happy watching a woman vomit, and as the Wall Street Journal reports, they've been removed. The title for the ad was "O.M.G.I.G.P.", or for those not quite down with acronyms, "Oh My God I'm Going To Puke". It featured a man happily sharing his laptop with his partner; to her horror, he was viewing some generic revolting website (yes, whilst sitting at the table with his loved one), and thus, much projectile vomiting ensued. On him. After he slipped on it. Read full story... ...

Microsoft has been sued a lot. It happens. This one could end up costing them a decent chunk of change, however. In 1994, Peter Hochstein and Jeffrey Tenenbaum were granted a patent for "communicating live while playing the same video game in separate locations." The two sued Microsoft in 2004, claiming that Xbox Live infringes on their patent. Microsoft's defense appears to hinge upon the claim that Xbox Live operates outside of the actual video game. Furthermore, Kotaku notes that the company has resorted to cheap tricks, including holding up the trial for weeks over a type and providing 140,000 documents on the plaintiffs without any index. Sony was also sued by Hochstein and Tenenbaum over the PS2's network, but Sony settled the case for an undisclosed amount of money. Seems like the reverse of the lawsuit over rumble in controllers. In that case, Microsoft settled and licensed the tech to include rumble on the Xbox 360. Sony was the one that dragged the process out, finally releasing the DualShock 3 after settling the case. With the "PC versus Mac" debate now approaching its fourth decade the arguments from each side have necessarily become rather stale. How many times can we hear "Macs are too expensive " or "Windows always crashes " before it starts sounding like "Pepsi tastes better " or "Picard had more dignity"? But in recent years a new argument has emerged to rival the fervor of the operating-system zealots. It has more sides more participants and even more details to nitpick. It transcends age class familiarity with computers and yes -- even operating systems.Prepare for comment threads to stretch into the ... ...
