A small indication of the political leanings of some Aspen attendees: At a session with Jim Wallis, Michael Cromartie and our very own Ross Douthat, Michael Gerson pushed back against Wallis's contention that the Iraq war was immoral because it caused the loss of innocent life. Gerson noted that the previous regime in Iraq was responsible for terrible human rights violations, including genocide, and he went on to say that Saddam was "comparable to Pol Pot." This was apparently a controversial assertion, because it provoked boos and grumbling in the audience. I would note for the record that there seemed to be no Kurds in the audience. ... North of Oslo, north of Longyearbyen, almost as north as North itself, the National Geographic Endeavor breaks pack ice in endless daylight through a gray-teal sea. The expedition has been cruising near Svalbard, a group of high arctic islands larger than Denmark. Ashore, this arctic desert is so harsh natives wisely never settled here — only men digging coal, trapping arctic fox and polar bear, and hunting whales were foolish enough to come. A forlorn whaling camp remains. Whalers searched for oil in blubber and bone to light their economy. Now the question arises: Is this last wilderness being changed by another kind of oil? This desolate, grand, forgotten sea has suddenly come to the center of world attention for one reason: The pace of climate change is faster than expected. In the last 50 years, as much as half of summer sea ice has gone missing. Another few decades could mean that ice disappears entirely. The absence of ice in water has little to do with raising sea levels; it is water stored on land in the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets that could overfill the oceans like a brimming bathtub. But since ice acts as a kind of mirror, less ice means less reflected sunlight, which means that the arctic could heat at twice the rate of the rest of the world. And in the last five years, some of Greenland’s glaciers have shown accelerated melting as well. Water rising With this melting from ice sheets and glaciers — and the nat ...

Michael Gerson's column suggesting Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter for vice-president is the latest example of someone paid to report the facts actually refusing to do 5 minutes of work to, ya know, report the facts. The basis for Gerson's support for Ritter is that he is one of "two popular red-state Democratic governors." Now, I think it would be great to see Ritter on the Democratic ticket - but I also think it would be great for people paid to report facts to actually check the facts. Because had Gerson bothered to take 5 minutes looking at the actual empirical public opinion data, he would have found that Bill Ritter isn't that popular . In fact, he would have found that Bill Ritter is unpopular. Let me reiterate - this is about journalism, not about Bill Ritter. I think he'd make an intriguing choice for VP, and I wish he was more popular. But if I wrote a column about Ritter for VP, I would not come right out of the gate pushing a pure, provable fiction that exposes me as a slothful purveyor of fantasies that I fabricate in my own head. That such sloth pervades our most Serious Newspapers of Record should irritate everyone who takes the craft of journalism seriously. ... Source: www.bostonherald.com --- 16 days ago

A U.S. congressional committee report criticized the near universal lack of recall by the Bush administration about the friendly-fire death of Pat Tillman. The report from the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee said administration officials turned over 1,500 pages of e-mails and other documents related the to 2004 death the National Football League star-turned Army Ranger in Afghanistan, but none contained any mention of fratricide, the San Jose Mercury-News reported Tuesday. Seattle Post Intelligencer - By Michael Gerson - Jul. 22 (Opinion) - Any legislation ambitious enough to cut carbon emissions significantly and encourage energy technologies will require a broad political and social consensus. Nothing this complex and expensive gets done on a party-line vote. Yet many environmental leaders seem unpracticed at coalition building.
