This was the Great Wail of China. As hurdler Liu Xiang hobbled out of the Bird's Nest Stadium -- volunteers wept openly, a female journalist cried in the mixed zone and his coach sobbed at the most extraordinary press conference of the Olympics -- a nation shared his pain. "We were looking forward to watching him run," said Wang Qingchi, a man in his 60s who lives near the Bird's Nest. "In competitions there are victories and defeats; you never know if he can win the gold medal or not. If he competed, we wouldn't have minded even if he had lost. But he didn't even race. This is a big let down." There was no athlete -- not Michael Phelps or Usain Bolt or any pixie gymnast -- who meant more to these Olympics than the 110-meter hurdler from Shanghai. To some observers the Olympics are basically a track meet surrounded by the other carnival acts, and squarely in the middle of the big top, the epicenter of the Games, was a 25-year-old Chinese hurdler who did not make it over even one hurdle. He was not done in by the super weight of expectations and pressure that had haunted him the very moment he had breasted the finish line in Athens as the first Chinese track-and-field gold medalist, but by the all-too-human breakdown of his body. Liu had a flare-up of Achilles tendinitis he's battled off and on for six years and pain from a protruding bone in his right heel over the weekend. That forced him out of his first-round heat, despite his ...

BEIJING -- On a sticky Sunday morning when history and mythology were intertwined, a 23-year-old swimmer with the slack-jawed smile and an acute sense of the moment churned through Lane 4 of the Water Cube and into sports immortality and the common currency of the English language. In rewriting swimming and Olympic history with his eighth gold medal, Michael Phelps was rewriting the dictionary. As backstroker Aaron Peirsol, who started the 4x100 medley relay, would say, "The term Spitzian might be outdated now by the Phelpsian feat." ...

BEIJING -- Qin Shi Huang built the Great Wall of China more than 2,000 years ago, but the guess here is China's first emperor, guarded in his eternal repose by a terra cotta army, did not actually do the brick-and-mortar work himself. If there is a lesson in the murky past of the Middle Kingdom that can be transferred to the architectural confection known as the Water Cube, it is this: If Michael Phelps wins a record eight gold medals in the capital this week, it will be the toil of Jason Lezak that made the difference. ...

MySpace plans to integrate Google Gears with its platform, according to the social network's co-founder Chris DeWolfe. Users will be able to access their profiles offline using the Google Gears APIs, but the feature won't be available for a few months. DeWolfe was fielding a few questions in an interview at the TechCrunch50 event in San Francisco with co-host Mike Arrington, who started off the interrogation by asking DeWolfe if he was dating Paris Hilton. The gentlemanly DeWolfe declined to answer the question. He did talk about the new music service launching this month that will partner with the major labels, offer free streaming, and include some original content from its audience of 120 million members. DeWolfe said that MySpace is very focused on making the new service a success, with more than 70 people, including top MySpace management, working on the project. He was asked if Amazon was providing the downloading capabilities, but declined to answer. MySpace has a strong music foundation, and may be able to make some inroads into the Apple/iTunes territory. It stands to reason that TechCrunch the blog will have an unfair advantage in covering the TechCrunch50 event . The same team produces both products, and the company has put a gag order on companies accepted to present on stage. Only the TechCrunch team knows who's going to be pitching at the event. So it will be easy for them to organize their coverage and even prepare stories on the presenting companies ahead of time. This kvetch may smack of inside baseball to many readers, but it's been bugging me. Do I really want to spend three days covering an event where I am at such a decided disadvantage, where I'm competing with the event itself? DemoFall , for comparison's sake, doesn't compete with other journalists or blogs; It has its own site but it doesn't have the readership, stature, or aspirations of TechCrunch. But I believe TechCrunch's unfair advantage in covering its own event will be mitigated by policies that TechCrunch50 co-host Jason Calacanis relayed after talking with CNET News Editor in Chief Dan Farber. Quoting an e-mail from Calacanis: Mike [Arrington, TechCrunch founder] has agreed that: a) he will not allow TechCrunch editors to bank stories [write them ahead of time]. b) TechCrunch will not cover the live demos until after each session--giving other press outlets first shot at the stories (like an HOUR advantage!) c) TechCrunch will link to other publications in TC's coverage. Good for you, Jason and Michael. I ...

Personal politics aside (I'm for Obama), I had gotten skeptical lately about the hyper-criticism of Palin in the media--and even (forgive me) all the pro-Obama coverage. I started to suspect that objective reporting had been thrown by the wayside. But after watching the last presidential debate with the Metropolitan Republican Club of New York City, I've changed my mind. Apparently there is simply very little criticism of Obama to report; even Republicans seem loathe to criticize him. I thought my foray into "Republican Land" could be an opportunity to counter Palin's negative press--not because I'm a fan, but because I didn't think it was right to discount her supporters. Everyone should have a voice, I thought. And how can you fight an opponent whom you dismiss entirely? What I learned was that not all Republicans are Palin's eager supporters. So I can't blame just the "liberal media" for Palin's negative press; Republicans too are surprisingly candid about her imperfections. The Metropolitan Republican Club, counting Michael Bloomberg and Rudolph Giuliani among its members, hosted a fundraiser October 7 for Saul Farber, a candidate for the New York State Assembly. Despite Farber's young age (at twenty-two, he is only a few months younger than his opponent Richard Gottfried was when he was elected to the Assembly in 1970), it was a mature crowd of about sixty people. About half were in their fifties or older; half in their thir ...

This year, five residents from Georgetown will be taking on one mission – the fight against cancer – by participating in one walk for one cause – the fight against cancer. Other Georgetown residents are encouraged to join their neighbors in this effort by registering for the 20th annual Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk, presented by Hyundai Motor America. The event will be held Sunday, Sept. 21. Georgetown walkers — Michael Andrews, Marilyn Andrews, Stacie Melchin, David Allen and Jonathan Allen — will join more than 7,000 participants, who are expected to raise $7.2 million for cancer research and care for children and adults at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Over the past 19 years, walkers and their supporters have contributed more than $51 million to Dana-Farber. This funding supports cutting-edge cancer research to find cures and better treatments for all forms of the disease. It also provides special services and assists with costs of patient care and treatment. The Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk is the only event, other than the Boston Marathon itself, that is sanctioned by the Boston Athletic Association to use the historic 26.2-mile route from Hopkinton to Boston. Walkers can choose from five different routes: 26.2 miles or 13.1 miles from Hopkinton; 13.1 miles from Wellesley; 5 miles from Boston College; or the 3-mile route that begins at the Harvard Medical School Quad, at 2 p.m. Participants on the Hopkinton (26.2 or 13.1 mi ...

Although his legs felt heavy and his feet were sore, Selectman Michael O’Donnell said his pain paled in comparison to what cancer victims live with every day. O’Donnell, his wife, Pat, daughter Casey and her friend Dave participated in the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk to benefit the Dana Farber Cancer Institute last weekend, and O’Donnell said he is quite pleased with the support he received from the community. The walk supports the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in its efforts to find a cure for cancer. In 2006, Dana-Farber treated more than 32,000 adult and pediatric patients and conducted more than 208,745 patient visits and 629 clinical trials. Mike and Pat met up with Casey and Dave at Wellesley College at the halfway mark and walked the last 13.1 miles into Boston to the finish line. “We walked 13.1 miles,” he said. “As we got closer to the finish line, every time we had to step up over a curb became a challenge as our legs got heavier and heavier.” Photographs of cancer patients were placed along the walk route. Mothers, fathers, brother,s sisters, young children and senior citizens alike are diagnosed with cancer every year. The disease has no preference. “Whenever something started to hurt, I’d look at the posters and see their faces. To me it was a personal motivation to keep going,” O’Donnell said. “When you think of your personal circumstances, and how hard it is in your daily life, it pales in comparison t ...
