Few live events have the power to draw an audience of billions, but the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics easily surpassed that landmark. The largest international sporting event of the 21st century was also the most technically complex Olympics ceremony ever, broadcast for the first time in High Definition and surround sound. At the heart of it all was Meyer Sound’s Matrix3™ audio show control system, which managed all technical aspects of the performance, including audio, motion control, pyrotechnics, and lighting. The audience of nearly 95,000 in National Stadium (widely known as the “Bird’s Nest”) included over 80 heads of state, international celebrities and VIPs, along with more than 17,000 performers. The crowd and viewers around the world were treated to an event like no other, including audio from a stunning Meyer Sound system designed by event technology specialist Gary Hardesty of Sound Media Fusion LLC (SMF). ...

Edward T. Meyer is the Vice President of Exhibits and Archives for Ripley Entertainment. He's worked for the company since 1978, and has personally acquired more than 20,000 exhibits. He took some time to answer a few of Londonist's questions about the new London location of Ripley's Believe It or Not, which opens today. Why did Ripley’s Believe It Or Not decide to open a London location? London is one of the greatest cities in the world. We have been in Blackpool for nearly 40 years, but have always wanted to be in London too. The perfect location in 1 Piccadilly Circus became available and we jumped on it. London will also serve as a stepping stone for future Ripley expansion in Europe. We are very excited about being in London! Why do you think Ripley’s Believe It Or Not will stand out amongst all the other London tourist attractions? Because we are unique — 500 exhibits you can’t see anywhere else. And importantly, they are all true and genuine! What should Londoners know about the history of Ripley’s Believe It Or Not that they may not already know? We have been “proudly freaking out families for 90 years” and have been in the museum business over 75 years. We know how to amuse and amaze. We have 30 Believe It or Not! Odditoriums, but London will be the biggest and best! If they like our books, or our tv show, they are going to love this Odditorium. What in the London location are you most proud of? The crystal covered “Ameri ...

Admittedly, I enjoyed Twilight. I picked it up when it was on the Borders Original Voices shelf a few years ago. It was wish-fulfillment fluff, but sometimes I’m in the mood for fluff. I was bothered by Bella’s inability to ever save herself but, for a heavy dose of teen angst romance, it was somewhat [...] ...

The Oshkosh West tennis team had another successful day on the courts going undefeated at the Oshkosh Invitational. The Wildcats defeated Racine Case 5-2, West Bend East 5-2 and West Bend West 6-1. Wests freshman phenom Karlin Naslund remained unbeaten (7-0) at No. 1 singles with wins over Bailee Sliker (Racine Case) 6-0, 6-0, Ashley Jacob (West Bend East) 6-0, 6-0 and Heidi Hoffman (West Bend West) 6-1, 6-0. Val Langkau, a junior at No. 3 singles, surrendered only three games the whole day beating Kate Meyer of Racine Case 6-1, 6-0, Hillary Blommel (West Bend East) 6-0, 6-2 and Libby Suffern of West Bend West 6-0, 6-0. (Langkau) has been playing extremely well, West tennis coach Debbie Ashenbrenner said. She is really hitting out on the ball and being aggressive to control the points. Oshkosh West wasnt alone in playing well as Oshkosh North won its first action of the year with a 6-1 win over Racine Case, a narrow 4-3 win over West Bend East and another 6-1 thumping of West Bend West. The story of the day for the Spartans was sophomore Nicole Wilsey defeating West Bend Easts Samantha Simmon 5-7, 6-4 (11-4). Wilseys win clinched the closest margin of victory for North. It was Wilseys first varsity match. Also in singles at No. 1, Lexie Fauske was unbeaten as well. The Spartans No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams also had a good day. The No. 1 team comprised of Meg Saari and Steph Kerswill and the No. 2 team made up of Brynn Hartzell an ...

First of all, not having seen the game (thanks, by the way, for sending a crew all the way to Minnesota to televise only one game), and not having a crystal ball, I can’t say how Sean Gallagher’s shoulder felt tonight as he surrendered 11 hits and 10 runs in 5 innings. Here’s what I know: •    Gallagher was 10 days removed from missing a start with a sore shoulder. •   He threw his fastball at 88-91 MPH instead of 93-94. Should I give the A’s the benefit of the doubt, because after all they are the professional experts and I’m not? Here’s what I know: •    In March 2005, when Dan Meyer was throwing 85 MPH instead of 93 MPH, the A’s let him keep going out there until he effectively destroyed a very promising career. •    In March-May 2005, when Esteban Loaiza was throwing 82 MPH instead of 93 MPH, the A’s let him keep going out there getting lit up again and again. •    Today, Huston Street finally acknowledged that his recent drop in performance and velocity results from trying to pitch through pain (groin). I'm sure we were all stunned by this news. So what do we know? We know that drops in velocity should be taken seriously – only more so when the pitcher is a known injury concern and only more so when you are talking about a pitcher whom the A’s are counting on to be a big part of the future. Should I give the A’s brass the benefit of the doubt and assume they are not negligently risking the career of a promising young pitcher? That ...
