Until he was gunned down over the weekend, Salvador Vergara Cruz was a man of some influence with a promising future in his political party. Mayor of an important Resort town outside Mexico City, and a close confidant of his state's governor, Vergara apparently felt sufficiently at ease to travel without a specially assigned team of bodyguards despite receiving death threats from purported drug lords, reports Tracy Wilkinson. The 34-year-old Vergara was killed by hooded assassins armed with semiautomatic rifles as he drove with other officials toward his home city of Ixtapan de la Sal on Saturday afternoon. The killing of a sitting elected official may turn out to be one of the more significant political slayings in Mexico's raging drug war, not so much because of who he was as for what his death represented. Prosecutors in the state of Mexico say Vergara was killed because he refused to allow drug gangs to move into and operate freely in his city, along a transit route for drugs into the nation's capital. AirTran is launching weekend, nonstop flights from Baltimore to Cancun beginning in March 2009 - just in time for spring break. The airline plans two flights each on Saturday and Sunday, coming and going, to the popular Mexican Resort city. Several airlines have flights to Cancun from BWI, but right now only USA3000 offers nonstop trips, while many of the others involve a change of plane. Up until last year, Mexicana Airlines had direct service from BWI to Mexico City. But Mexicana suspended those flights after less than two years of service. So if you prefer to keep ups and downs to a minimum, like me, AirTran may be just the ticket. But I'm guessing USA3000 won't exactly put out the welcome mat. I've never flown USA3000, but theboth airlines have similar new aircraft and amenities. What do you think? AirTran vs. USA3000 in a smackdown at 35,000 feet- who wins? ... Hurricane Marie formed off western Mexico and drifted through the Pacific Ocean on a path that forecasters said would keep it well away from land. Marie was centered 860 miles west-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California on Friday night, the U.S. National Hurricane Center reported. It had winds clocked at 75 mph and was heading slowly westward. Marie is the sixth hurricane of the eastern Pacific season. Also Friday, a new tropical depression formed 230 miles south of the Mexican Resort city of Acapulco. The storm had maximum sustained winds near 35 mph and could become a tropical storm on Saturday, according to the center. It was projected to follow a northwesterly path parallel to Mexico's Pacific coast. ... Source: www.charlotteobserver.com --- 15 hours ago
Scores of people fled flooded homes Saturday as Hurricane Norbert lashed Mexico's southern Baja California peninsula with torrential rains and screaming winds. Norbert, with winds of up to 105 miles (165 kph), was expected to hit land along a sparsely populated stretch north of the Resort of Cabo San Lucas and then make a second landfall Saturday night in northwestern Mexico's mainland - possibly as a hurricane, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. Residents fled to shelters as floodwaters rose in their homes. Winds bent palm trees and some streets were in knee-deep water in the town of Puerto San Carlos. "We left our house because we were scared. Our house is pretty poor and the water was already coming in," said Maria Espinosa, 54, who arrived at a high school with her daughter and two grandchildren. They joined about 60 other people sitting on foam mattresses and blankets. A hurricane warning was issued for the west coast of Baja California from Puerto San Andresito to Agua Blanca. The government also issued hurricane warnings along the coast of the border state of Sonora and on the east coast of the Baja peninsula from near La Paz north to Loreto. Norbert is expected to sweep across Baja on Saturday, cross the Gulf of California and then head toward the Mexican mainland. As of 11 a.m. EDT (1500 GMT), the hurricane's center was located about 45 miles (70 kilometers) south of Cabo San Lazaro, Mexico, and was moving north-no ... Police have found nine more bodies dumped around the Mexican border city of Tijuana, where nearly 50 people have been killed in a week of violence related to the drug trade. Five men were found asphyxiated in a car Saturday in the eastern part of the city, according to the Baja California state Attorney General's Office. The men were beaten and had their hands bound. The bodies of two beheaded men were found wrapped in blankets on a road elsewhere in the city, the office said. The heads were in black plastic bags nearby. A piece of cardboard left by the bodies read: "These are the bricklayer's people." On Monday, a message found with 12 bodies next to a Tijuana elementary school threatened "all of those who are with 'The Engineer.'" State prosecutor Rommel Moreno has blamed the violence on warring leaders within the Arellano Felix drug gang. More than 400 people have been killed in drug-related violence in the city across from San Diego this year, including at least 49 this week. On Friday night, two men were found shot to death in the same empty lot near the elementary school where the 12 bodies were found Monday. Execution-style killings, beheadings and shootouts have soared across Mexico since the army and federal police intensified their fight against the drug trade nearly two years ago. Gunmen Saturday killed the mayor of Ixtapan de la Sal, a Resort town southwest of Mexico City. Salvador Vegara was in a car with two other p ... Source: www.katu.com --- 39 days ago
