Platform: ( PS3 ) Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is an incredible experience, the best game yet for the PlayStation 3 and a must-see finale to Hideo Kojima’s seminal, often celebrated (and occasionally reviled) stealth action series. But there’s a surprising degree of irony in the success of this last game, which is at its best in ways its predecessors conspicuously fell flat. If you haven’t played a lot of Metal Gear Solid before now, I’m talking about the gameplay here–the part where you grasp a controller and actively make Solid Snake creep around the shadows, stealthily snapping necks and infiltrating enemy bases to stop some nefarious plot or other. Solid snake returns That part has always been a little lacking. Truthfully, this is a series that you sit back and watch as much as you interact with it. Over the years, MGS has been buoyed by its high production values, well-crafted cinematics, and increasingly twisty, outlandish plots–even as its gameplay has typically lagged behind that of its contemporaries, with nonsensical mechanics and an awkward adherence to tradition making the games less fun to play than they ought to be. Before now, you would have recommended a Metal Gear Solid game to someone looking for a technically impressive and complexly plotted story of intrigue, but not a deeply satisfying action game. So when asked by MTV what he thought of Microsoft's Final Fantasy XIII coup, he offered words: Consumers responded to "GTA" on the PS3 just as they did on the 360. In support of the Watchmen movie adaptation coming out next March, Warner Bros. Interactive is planning to publish two downloadable games for DC's next comic flick. The games will be made for the Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and PC platforms. Developed by Deadline Games, who created the delicious Chili Con Carnage for the PSP, the first Watchmen game episode will be released simultaneously with the film's release and the second will follow the DVD debut. According to Variety , Warner wanted to deviate from the usual console video game-movie release and the company felt that the upcoming downloadable titles will serve fans better. "We don’t want a low-quality console game that will get lost at retail," said by Warner Bros. Interactive Senior Production VP Samantha Ryan. Written by David Hayter, who was the voice of Solid Snake from the Metal Gear Solid game series, Watchmen is set to hit theaters on March 6, 2009. Check out the video after the cut. John Koller, senior marketing manager for the PSP at Sony Computer Entertainment America, speaking with the press at the E3 Game show last week said PSP games using the GPS are likely to appear next year. The GPS PSP add-on was initially launched in Japan in 2006 but it did not really generate a lot of attention from game developers. In Japan there are currently only a few applications taking advantage of the GPS: two mapping and navigation applications, a software to look at stars in the sky and a virtual golf caddy. But these applications are not “games” stricto sensu. The only bit of location-based gaming was in Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops from Konami (released at the end of 2006) which contains a feature that takes advantage of the PSP GPS add-on. In this game the PSP, when using the GPS receiver, acts as a sort of "radar" that players use to recruit new soldiers (in the game) by moving around (in the real world). It spices up a bit the game but it remains a rather limited use of GPS in a gameplay. In the most recent weeks Sony Computer Entertainment Europe launched in Europe a GPS add-on for the PSP too, but there again, no game but a navigation software (developed by Nav N Go). Starting with navigation to create an installed base of GPS module owners, then developing games for this module might be the Sony strategy. But waiting until 2009 for launching a navigation software in the U.S. will not make this market happen any ...
