Source: www.vivalawino.com --- 4 days ago 9$. This is Costco's private label, which they increasingly have been releasing wines under. I've yet to have a Kirkland Signature wine that I thought was a total dud (although I've stayed away from some of them that I figured were more likely to suck--California Pinot, anyone?). Of course, that makes sense, because by some accounts, Costco is the largest seller of wine in the United States. Furthermore, their whole corporate ethos is basically about giving consumers a great deal. Polished, slick and new-world in style, with an oaky nose, thick texture, and notes of cherries, chocolate, tobacco, and vanilla. This wine is exactly what I expect from a new world Merlot. Verging on the edge of over-extraction, and a lot of oak. However, there is a lot of fruit and tannnin to balance the whole package. For 9$, I think you could do a whole lot worse. This is real wine, at an attractive price, and although it's not my style, I can't knock it. B- ...
Source: undertakingwine.com --- 4 days ago This bottle was given to me a while ago from Pindar when I was out visiting with Pindar and Les. I remember him telling me to wait to have this. And that I should share it with my family over a nice meal. Well we finally got around to it and it was worth the wait. Let me again start off by saying that 2007, on Long Island was one of the hottest on record. It was the ideal season for growing grapes and the ripening of grapes. The wine’s that you taste from this vintage on Long Island will not be like any other. This is a banner year yet at the same time it is considered an anomaly, by some. I am leaning in that direction of the 2007 an anomaly year for Long Island wine, or 2007 is an extraordinary vintage. That being said, this is up in my top 5 for Merlot’s from the 2007 vintage. I have tasted about a dozen, some from the barrel and some unreleased in bottle, but others, I am still waiting to try and some are not released yet. On the nose, I was picking up some smoky, woodsy, and tobacco notes upon open. It needed some time to awaken in the glass. After a while I was picking up notes of cherry and plum with hints of cedar, vanilla and toffee that gave way to a freshly roasted coffee bean. The taste was a bit tannic at first, and needed some time to open. Once it did, I was picking up some blueberry cobbler, vanilla and cherry. There were some deep dried herbal notes, like mint and some eucalyptus, that matched well with an earthy mineral ...

[ Water into Wino ] After passing up a $60 red from Anwilka and a $40 red blend from Meinert, I found a $20 Merlot Cabernet blend from Uva Mira. Source: thegrandcrew.wordpress.com --- 5 days ago 2004 Artesa Merlot Appellation: Sonoma/Napa blend Tasting Notes: 100% Merlot, 74% from Sonoma, 26% from Napa. 13.9% ABV. Bought this several months ago at a dinner with the winemaker after having the 2005 Merlot, which knocked my socks off. Pretty dark violet. This nose is a little candy, cherry, red berries, a touch of vanilla/oak. On the palate, the red raspberry and cherry fruit comes through along with a little pepper, some clove; fantastic tannins, a bit of oakiness, but not too much, and acid. Full body, smooth. Very food friendly. Big for a Merlot, but not as new world as you might think. Wonderful lingering finish. Delicious. Unbelievable for the price. Might have some time left on it too, I might hold the other bottle for a while longer. Rating: 4/5, 17/20, 93/100 Price: $20 at The Wine Market A note on ratings: I use the 100 point rating for Cellartracker, even though my palate is still developing. As a statistics geek, I know that the variability in scores works itself out as the number of scores increases. However, my score may not be yours or Robert Parker’s, it is simply a subjective value based on my palate. I much prefer to use a 5 point (or star, or whatever you want to call it) scale, as it more represents my reaction to wine, which is more simple than a 100 point scale represents. I like the 20 point scale as the more detailed score. On this site, I will provide all three, although the most meaningful are the 5 and 20 ...
