Related Articles An examination of the services provided by Psychiatric Consultation Liaison Nurses in a general hospital. J Psychiatr Ment Health Nurs. 2008 Aug;15(6):500-7 Authors: Johnston ML, Cowman S The political, professional and economic context in which Mental health care is delivered has witnessed significant changes in recent times. The movement of psychiatric patients from Institutions to community settings has seen the emphasis of the loci of care delivery shifting with increasing numbers presenting to general hospitals. The speciality of the Psychiatric Consultation Liaison Nurse (PCLN) has emerged as a bridge between Mental health and general hospital services. A descriptive, non-experimental research approach was employed to establish patient profiles and to provide an overview of the depth of service provision. This design was selected as the most appropriate because of the limited information on the PCLN in an Irish setting and secondly, as the study was limited to one rural geographical location. A questionnaire was utilized to collate the details of patients who had received a Mental health assessment. The findings presented here are the profiles of patients assessed by the PCLN during the 3-month study period. The results add further credence to the existing evaluative studies in presenting the characteristics of patients within the Irish context and further contribute to the unique body of evidence that defines th ...

The Recession Chimera continues its slow, painful slouch toward the Potomac. It's prompting  government to protect Institutions that are as big, dumb and incompetent as itself . It's an economic meltdown . (A "seemingly endless" one at that.) It's causing Americans to turn against the free market . It's literally taking candy from the mouths of babes ! Take that, former Sen. Phil Gramm. As Paul Thornton noted recently , Gramm diagnosed our national malaise as a form of "Mental recession" and the bellyaching nation as a bunch of "whiners." How could a man affiliated with a presidential campaign say something so heartless, unpatriotic and downright mean? As it turned out, he couldn't . But what could prompt such possibly unconstitutional hate speech? Maybe it's that... Wells Fargo has reported a phenomenal quarter . Oil prices are plummeting . Business is strong in industries ranging from online auctions to junk food to personal computers . And Dish Network is in the air ! Does this mean the economy is turning the corner, or that it's booming? Of course not. It means the economy is too varied, complex and (no pun intended) rich to be described in the kind of inane, pro-or-con flapdoodle that politicians and great media organs employ. A vain, wealth-destroying politican makes a statement and people panic. Hysterical reporters seize on an interesting but not essential statistic , only to drop it when it no longer supports their dire ...

So long, Cuckoo's Nest. Oregon State Hospital, the Mental institution where the 1975 movie "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" was filmed, is making way for a new complex. Most of the dilapidated, 125-year-old main building will be torn down and replaced starting this fall. Although mean Nurse Ratched was pure fiction, the Oregon State Hospital has struggled with some very real troubles over the years, including overcrowding, crumbling floors and ceilings, outbreaks of scabies and stomach flu, sexual abuse of children by staff members, and patient-on-patient assaults. Politicians had been talking for years about the need to replace the hospital, but didn't get serious about it until a group of legislators made a grim discovery during a 2004 tour: the cremated remains of 3,600 Mental patients in corroding copper canisters in a storage room. The lawmakers were stunned. "Nobody said anything to anybody," said Oregon Senate President Peter Courtney, who dubbed the chamber "the room of lost souls." The remains belonged to patients who died at the hospital from the late 1880s to the mid-1970s, when Mental illness was considered so shameful that many patients were all but abandoned by their families in Institutions. "It just created such an emotional momentum" for replacing the hospital, said Courtney, who led the effort to build a new institution. Although "Cuckoo's Nest" was filmed here, neither the movie nor the 1962 Ken Kesey novel on ...

A state health official says the first patients should arrive next week at the new Mental hospital in Butner designed to replace two older facilities. The News & Observer of Raleigh reports that Secretary Dempsey Benton said in a letter to Gov. Mike Easley that the new Central Regional Hospital is ready for use and should be safer than the two older Institutions. The letter was written July 9 and released Tuesday. The new $130 million hospital will replace Dorothea Dix Hospital in Raleigh and John Umstead Hospital in Butner. Opening of the hospital has been delayed several times over concerns about adequate staffing and safety reviews showing conditions that could allow patients to commit suicide. ...

(24 comments - 107 views) Squink is starstruck by her master's awesomeness Not to be confused with any of the other members with critter avatars, which is about half of us, critttter with the hardest 'T' sound you will ever hear just got her 100th star! This is a major cause for celebration. Thankfully there will be plenty of fireworks detonated today in her homeland to commemorate this event. Critttter is one of my favorite sifters. She finds some of the coolest old musical gems just to remind us that there actually was music before Miley Cyrus . Not that rusty classics are the only videos she posts. She's given us: Rock concerts at Mental Institutions , Billion-dollar underground art museums , Flying steamrollers , Naked Swedish soldiers , 107 year-old light bulbs , and her Shitlist . I always enjoy reading her comments too. Sometimes I swear she's really a man pretending to be a woman, because everyone knows that the fair sex is biologically not funny . I'd really hate to find out that all this time I've been laughing at the remarks of a *gasp* woman. So give it up for critttter, one of the most interesting and entertaining members I've found in my time here. - kronosposeidon ...
