Related Articles The clinical effectiveness of a brief consultation and advisory approach compared to Treatment as usual in child and adolescent Mental Health services. Clin Child Psychol Psychiatry. 2008 Jul;13(3):365-76 Authors: McGarry J, McNicholas F, Buckley H, Kelly BD, Atkin L, Ross N A brief consultation and advice (BCA) approach to dealing with routine referrals was introduced into a child and adolescent Mental Health service (CAMHS) over an 18-month period. This is a time-limited, client-centred and solution-focused approach to dealing with common non-complex referrals. The model proposes that all families are seen for an initial 'consultation' appointment followed by a maximum of two further appointments. A randomized controlled study compared the clinical effectiveness of BCA Treatment with Treatment as usual (TAU) over a 6-month period. The parents of children referred to CAMHS were eligible to participate if their child was deemed 'non-complex'. Ethical approval was granted by the relevant ethics committee. Families who consented to participate in the study were randomly allocated to either the BCA or TAU group. Sixty children enrolled in the study. Both groups showed improvements on a number of variables at 3 months post Treatment, but only those receiving BCA showed continued improvement at 6 months. Participants in both groups showed high levels of satisfaction with the Treatment received. Participants in the TAU grou ...

Talk about going out with a win. Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M., has spent years fighting for legislation that would require insurance plans to treat Mental Health patients on par with those who have physical ailments. No more higher copays or deductibles for the Mental Health treatments. No more limits on visits to the doctor that differ from the caps for other patients. Domenici, after six terms, is leaving office this year. One of his final votes was on the Mental Health legislation he fought so hard for over the years. ...

By Jim Beall, Jr. Member California State Assembly There are 18 million Californians who have Health insurance can count on medical help when they have a physical illness or injury. But if they suffer from a severe Mental Health or substance abuse disorder, many of them will learn their treatments will only go as far as their pocketbook will take them. Insurance plans have drawn a line when it comes to treating Mental disorders. Many do not provide coverage. Others limit what types of disorders merit Treatment and cap lifetime Mental Health treatments at $50,000 compared with $1 million for other services. This disparity – some would call it discrimination – in Health coverage costs the U.S. $150 billion in Treatment, social services, and lost productivity annually, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. The most tragic statistic lies in wasted lives – people overwhelmed by severe Mental disorders. Of the more than 30,000 Americans who commit suicide annually, 80 to 90 percent of them suffered from a Mental disorder that could have been treated through therapy or medication, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports. In California, we can reverse this trend. Legislation is on Gov. Schwarzenegger’s desk now, Assembly Bill 1887, that requires insurers to provide coverage and Treatment for Mental disorders and substance abuse equivalent to the coverage provided for medical illnesses. This bill is also an op ...
