As FierceHealthcare readers know, Mental Health patients waiting for care in emergency departments seldom get specialized care while they're waiting for psych evaluations. However, in an unusual move, one Ohio Health System has received a grant to do just that. The hope is that such services will help patients stabilize or perhaps even avoid hospitalization. Canadian attitudes toward Mental illness are a cause for concern, the Canadian Medical Association said Monday in releasing its annual report card on Health care. The group's eighth annual report surveyed Canadians to measure attitudes and experiences with the Health-care System. "This year’s report card shines a harsh, and frankly unflattering, light on the attitudes we Canadians have concerning Mental Health," said the group's president, Dr. Brian Day, in a release. "In some ways, Mental illness is the final frontier of socially-acceptable discrimination." FULL STORY Have you been stigmatized because of Mental illness? If so, please share your stories. ...

Abstract   Recent epidemiological statistics suggest approximately 250,000 people in the United States live with a spinal cord injury. Men constitute roughly 82% of these individuals. Following spinal cord injury, men frequently experience significant changes in their sexual functioning. As a result, men with spinal cord injuries are at an increased risk for experiencing adjustment difficulties. Unfortunately, relatively little is known about factors that promote or impede men’s adjustment to these changes. In the present article, the authors highlight how men’s adherence to gender scripts for sexual potency may contribute to their adjustment following a spinal cord injury. To organize the discussion, the authors review related literature and, through case examples, illustrate how men’s adherence to this gender norm may influence their post-injury Mental Health. Directions for gender-sensitive interventions and future clinical research are provided. During the 1950s and 1960s professionals intensely debated the prospect of changes in the Mental Health System, largely as a result of the introduction of new therapies, revised theories of Mental disorder, and shifting policies governing Mental Health accommodation. As well as giving rise to new subspecialties within medicine, psychiatrists in some jurisdictions at this time worked closely with psychologists in an attempt to offer a more comprehensive set of options that merged theory with practice. In Saskatchewan, Mental Health professionals worked closely with government officials and bureaucrats and produced a variety of innovative strategies that addressed changing priorities in this System. This article examines the role played by psychologists in Saskatchewan during this period as they worked cooperatively with psychiatrists and bureaucrats to merge medical, psychological, and political perspectives in a System aimed at accommodating Mental illness in the wake of new theories and treatments that questioned the efficacy of care in institutionalized settings in the wake of growing suggestions for care in the community. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. ...

MADISON, Wis. (AP) A new report says the number of students seeking Mental Health services on University of Wisconsin campuses is increasing but staffing levels are not. The report warns the wait for services is likely to increase if campuses do not add more counselors or find ways to better manage their existing workers. Already, most students have to wait a week to get an appointment in non-urgent cases. The report done by the UW System Office of Operations Review and Audit will be presented to the Board of Regents next week. The review found more than 9,500 students received counseling services in the 2006-2007 school year on 11 campuses where data was available. Three campuses reported a more than 40 percent increase in students seeking services since 2002-2003. ...
