Reader Question: My teenage son just got the Meningitis vaccine. Do I need it, too? It depends. The CDC recommends that all teens ages 11 to 18 get the vaccine, and the sooner the better. It’s also encouraged for college freshmen (who haven’t been previously vaccinated) who will be living in dorms. For adults over age 18, the vaccine is generally only needed if you fall into one of the high-risk groups—that includes lab workers who are exposed to the meningococcal bacteria, travelers who visit high-risk areas overseas, people who have certain immune system problems or have had their spleens removed, and anyone who’s been exposed during an outbreak. Meningococcal disease is life-threatening and can cause severe infections of the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms include headache, vomiting, stiff neck, high fever and sometimes a rash. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment is of the utmost importance, so if you suspect you or someone in your family has been exposed, get help right away.
