It doesn't really matter who's actually in the Melvins, or the last time you bought a Melvins album. If you like the Melvins, you're going to head out and see them, and that was exactly the case last night (Aug. 13) at Brooklyn's Music Hall of Williamsburg: A sea of black shirts and black hair gathered under the venue's dim lights, representing all levels of Melvins experience, from seasoned veterans to excited young fans. More on SPIN.com: >> Artist of the Day: Melvins >> Album Review: Melvins, Nude With Boots (Ipecac) Tonight, frontman King Buzzo and drummer Dale Crover – the only two constant members of the Melvins -- were joined by members of fellow Seattle rockers Big Business: bassist Jared Warren and drummer Coady Willis joined the Melvins in 2006, collaborating on the album (A) Senile Animal . But first, the full lineup of Big Business bit into the Music Hall with livid drum and bass guitar cacophony. On guitar was Toshi Kasai, a newcomer to the group, but a solid fit. They performed mostly from their new album, Here Comes the Waterworks , stirring up a mosh pit with tracks like "Grounds for Divorce" and "Just as the Day Was Dawning." But the Melvins were the main attraction, with King Buzzo standing in his familiar black tunic, sporting his infamous electric shock of hair. Jared, of Big Business, took the left side in a seersucker suit and hat, looking like a menacing version of Skipper from Gilligan's Island , while Cro ...

Kurt Cobain was almost a member and cited them as an influence. The Dead Kennedys’ Jello Biafra fronted them for a few albums and tours. Musicians as varied as alt-rock hero Mike Patton and jazz wonk John Zorn have routinely sung their praises, and they’ve influenced an entire galaxy of off-the-rails punk, metal and sludge acts as unique as Tool, Swans, Mastodon and Boris. Not bad for a band named after a grocery clerk in a nowheresville Washington state town that never exactly saw mainstream limelight. Yes, the Melvins are a cult – legendary among music lovers of all stripes for their 26-year longevity. But they’re also icons – still cranking out albums – and they haven’t played a proper Boston date in at least two years, so expect this Saturday’s headlining performance at the Paradise to be packed tight, loud and sweaty. When asked if the Melvins’ iconic status surprises him at all, guitarist/vocalist Buzz "King Buzzo'' Osborne prefers the shrug-off approach. Overanalyzing would kill what makes them special, he maintains. "I honestly don’t think about it too much,'' he said. "You have to take that (stuff) with a grain of salt. And I never plan that far ahead, and I’m never afraid of change.'' It’s a tad disingenuous to say the Melvins have remained completely intact.  Osborne has been the only consistent member for the band’s 26-year run, and there have been lineup changes galore. In 2006, Osborne and drummer Dale Crover (in pla ...

Confusing awesomeness is alive and well in the Melvins. Photo from the Melvins' MySpace page . I was a born procrastinator. In some ways, it's served me well. When I smell urgency (which smells somewhat like a grease fire) it prompts me to act swiftly and cleverly so that I might survive. I tried going to college for creative writing and then switched to literature, and I wrote a lot of stories and/or papers in the ambient dry heat of many a due date. For years, I have swung between bemoaning my lack of git-up-n'-go and reaping the ability of accomplishing much in a mere sliver of time. Yet here I am, brain obviously deteriorating, for it is 5 a.m. and I am only now beginning an article due this very day. I can't recall when I last stooped so low. Could it be that I am too hard on myself, and I'm getting a very proper and adult case of writer's block? That must be it. I have arrived. I worried about this earlier, to be fair. When I left the Melvins show on Thursday and walked to my car, I thought, you sh**head, why didn't you take any notes? I couldn't have, retorted my inner me. I could give you the usual stuff. Let's give a scan of the crowd first. Bobbing for Adam's apples, one might say. Lots of fellows and not many women. Fans pressed forward with urgency, setting up by the stage far in advance. Young'uns came in packs; older'uns roamed as lone wolves. There were dreadlocks galore, in a rainbow of colors. I saw more than one ...

It is a rare occurrence that I miss out on Porn . The band... but you knew that right? Riiiiiight..... Ok, so in spite of a minor setback previous to the show, I arrived in time for Big Business . If you know me, you know I love me some Big Business, and they did not disappoint this time around. They played a lot of material from their debut record, Here Come The Waterworks , and 3 songs from their latest tour ep... which happens to include a cover of Shocking Blue's 'Send Me a Postcard'. Not what you'd expect from a band as punishing as Big Business, but the results are kind of hard to argue with. It also seems that Big Business is no longer a 2 piece, as Toshi Kasai has taken on the role of full time guitarist. This time around, his parts seemed to gel a bit better than the last time they came through town, a trait that more touring and practice has obviously strengthened. Although Chicago probably endured the most ferocious storm of the summer about an hour before the show (and a killer all-night lightning display that was quite incredible), the real thunderstorm came when The Melvins took the stage. The Melvins and I have a strange history that dates back to 1996, and it involves the Rosemont Horizon and Kiss. Yes... Kiss the band with that annoying douchebag bass player Gene Simmons. I saw Kiss on their first reunion tour with full makeup and the original lineup, and The Melvins happened to be the opener. At the time, I had heard ...
