Melt-Banana cuts its teeth playing a dizzyingly fast, mildly comedic variant of grindcore often classified under the avant-garde catchall "Japanoise." On 2003's Cell-Scape , the band made a stylistic leap ... ...

Very loud and frenetic. Good fun. Pretty great really. Did I mention loud and frenetic? I can’t and don’t listen to Melt Banana at home, but thought they were ace live. I especially liked the seven short songs, each lasting only a few seconds, “that’s one…that’s two…that’s three”. The singer is a little dynamo. The support act, [...] ...

When preparing for a long drive, the short list of things to accomplish simply MUST include the gathering of music. With a properly curated CD changer (do the kids still use those?), an ass-numbing journey through middle California can be a pleasant (albeit extended) listening session -- it may turn out to be the least-distracted music consumption you've enjoyed since the last time you forgot how much driving 500 miles totally sucks. One easy tip for today's road warrior is to make sure you have some new and some old -- it's great to get acquainted with some fresh jams on the open road, but it's also nice to have something familiar to yell out the window at the cows at mile 300 (this is best experienced at around 1am on a clear, hot summer night. The stars are quite pretty around that area). Another tip is to, if you're actually using a disc changer, burn CDs with multiple albums on them to expand your selection. For this trip, I was able to turn make my 8-disc changer carry 13 records. "I FEEL FINE: The Road Trip" (Official Soundtrack) The Sword - Age of Winters Torche - Meanderthal Akimbo - Forging Steel and Laying Stone Melt Banana - Bambi's Dilemma Boris - Smile (Japanese import!) Jesu - Silver Melvins - Houdini Jesu - Conqueror None More Black - Loud About Loathing The Clash - London Calling Sundowner - Four One Five Two The Replacements - Tim NWA - Straight Outta Compton (I am not joking) Note: This is the order in which they app ...

Summer’s almost over, folks! I don’t know about you, but my summer was go! go! go! the whole time. Between the kids being off school, writing a ton (here and elsewhere), finishing up and self-publishing a book, keeping the house in order, looking for a new house (looks like we found one!), and of course, working my day job, I’m bushed. Time to relax! Ah, but how? It can be hard to find your way to relaxation bliss when you’re on the run all the time. There’s always that nagging feeling that, you know, maybe you should be doing something else, something “productive”. But relaxing is productive, right? I mean, it’s essential, especially if your career runs on ideas – and these days, whose career doesn’t run on ideas? We need that downtime to recharge the batteries and keep the idea generator running at optimal efficiency. Today’s prize is a step in the right direction: a Sleepmate white noise generator from the curiously awesome folks at Vat19 to help block out the world, an aromahand aromatherapy pillow to surround you with soothing scents, and a Vat19 Banana Bunker so you can rest easy knowing that, while you nap, your Banana is protected from accidental bruising or squishing. Aside from the perfect nap, unplagued by stray thoughts of impending Banana Armageddon (Bananageddon?), what do you do to relax and get the world’s worries to Melt away? You’ll be telling us – and the world – to enter today’s contest. But first, the prizes! ...
