Songs from his latest album are highlights of the show at the Greek. John Mellencamp is ready for your bad news. At the Greek Theatre on Thursday, stories of hard times fueled his songs, just as they always have, with Mellencamp's raspy drawl calling on the rest of us to join his bittersweet jubilee. ... As the title for his latest album suggests, John Mellencamp is hardly mellowing with age. The veteran rocker considers Life, Death, Love and Freedom an “adult” album. “I’m trying to live up to, you know, what a guy my age should be doing,” he says. “I’m trying not to look silly. You know, it’s like [...] ... Source: www.rollingstone.com --- 2 days ago
Photo: Getty “The Times They Are A-Changin’,” or at least John Mellencamp hopes. With the main theme of this upcoming election being “change,” Mellencamp has recorded a cover version of Bob Dylan’s famed “battle-cry for a generation.” Mellencamp’s version, recorded in stark black and white with Cougar performing solo on acoustic guitar, can be exclusively viewed [...] ... From his days as Johnny Cougar to "Live, Death, Love and Freedom" CHESTNUT STREET INCIDENT (1976) Key Tracks: "American Dream," "Good GIrls" Quick Take: It takes more than a leap of faith to be excited by Mellencamp's first five or six albums. He launched his career as "Johnny Cougar," a sobriquet thrust upon him by then-manager Tony DeFries, and Chestnut Street Incident presents an artist whose instincts run to recycled Stones riffs and Springsteen-derived braggadocio — an embarrassing combination. His version of "Oh, Pretty Woman" is fine... ... Source: www.variety.com --- 36 days ago
Music Reviews: Footage from "Easy Rider" was beamed on the wall behind John Mellencamp and his band during his opening number, "Pink Houses" -- a visual metaphor for the Midwestern troubadour whose unique vision of patriotism has been as divisive as Peter Fonda's Capt. America-garbed biker from 1969. ... Source: www.maxalbums.com --- 27 days ago

Unlike some prior Quickies, you've heard of these guys before. The Quickies columns have been settling into a theme of late, a theme of pimping obscure jazzers, especially whack jazzers. Hey, I can do nothing but that for years on end, but then I'd be skipping over some albums worthy of salute that come from the more mainstream side of music. By "mainstream," I don't mean I'm gong to be chatting up the latest... ... Source: blogs.courant.com --- 1 day ago
"The Times They Are A-Changin'" is one of Bob Dylan's most famous songs, a bellwether of the tumult that would engulf the late '60s. John Mellencamp gives it an updated context with a cover he recorded and posted on his website in the News column on the right-hand rail. Like Dylan, Mellencamp sings it alone with an acoustic guitar in the black-and-white video shot with a stationary camera. It's timely: as Jim Bessman points out in the essay accompanying the video, change is the leitmotif of both presidential campaigns this year, with Obama and the Democrats promising "change we can believe in" and McCain and the Republicans hailing their vice-presidential pick, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, as an "agent of change." Bessman gets a little carried away when he writes, "this veritable battle-cry for a generation ('Come senators, congressmen, please heed the call') has never seemed more timely than now," but the song still resonates deeply 44 years later. ...

The other day I was driving and the old song, “Rain on the Scarecrow” by John Cougar Mellencamp came on. A John Mellencamp tour in the midst of summer is about as American as apple pie, cotton candy and hot dogs, yet six-years ago this month, I swore off ever seeing John Mellencamp again. Just put up my review of John Mellencamp’s superb performance last night at the Greek Theatre, and what a transformation it was from his 2005 appearance at the Hollywood Bowl alongside John Fogerty. Three years ago he seemed more like a reliable entertainer delivering hits, albeit with a message attached. At the Greek, emboldened by [...] ... Find more results for Mellencamp on RSSMicro.com |
