Mel Kiper Jr. was picked up by Connecticut authorities today on suspicion of battery. He was arrested during a draft preview on NFL Live when police stormed the studio during filming with a warrant for his arrest. At first they tazered and pistol-whipped host Trey Wingo to the ground, as the only description they had for Kiper was "really stupid looking hair". But after they realized their mistake they dragged the draft guru out the door, leaving a trail of hair goo on the floor behind him. Apparently the arrest was over a fight that happened in an alley behind a bar in Bristol. The victim, a 28 year old construction worker, said he got into a fight with a man that hit him over the head several times with a "big board". As the police checked around for witnesses who knew which man in town was notorious for carrying a big board, they were pointed to Mel Kiper Jr. and a carpenter named Otto. Kiper believes he will be out soon and back at ESPN for draft day, as the evidence against him is very shaky. But evidence at the scene reportedly includes a placard that says "Miami - Vernon Gholston", which if true would seem to implicate Kiper. But he states that only an idiot carpenter, or a Sports Illustrated columnist, would put Gholston to Miami with the first pick, so it can't be him. More on this story as it develops. Draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr.'s post-draft rant about how solid a quarterback Caleb Hanie could be obviously contained some truth. Hanie, the Bears' undrafted rookie free-agent from Colorado State, was the most-mentioned QB after Thursday's 24-20 exhibition loss to Kansas City. ...

The most important thing I got out of ESPN Radio's Mike&Mike Show this morning was the possibility of one of the biggest blowhards in all of sports media in one of the most ridiculous sporting events annually claiming he would walk off the ESPN broadcast if something did not go the way he believes it will. In case you were not listening, Kiper claimed this morning on Mike&Mike he will walk off the set on Saturday during the network's coverage of the 2008 NFL Draft if Boston College quarerback Matt Ryan is still on the board after the first eight picks. No offense to Matt Ryan or his family, because I love the kid and his story at BC the last two years, but nothing would satisfy me more than Mel Kiper shutting the f!@# up for once and disappearing for good. While I believe the NFL Draft to be one of the most ridiculous events of the year, as well as the four weeks of mock drafts by NFL analysts who do not ever pay enough attention to college football to evaluate any of these players correctly, I may actually tune into for a bit this weekend if in fact Ryan is still on the board and this ultimate sports media geek does do what he threatened this morning. Perhaps it's because I'm a Raiders fan and they have not and likely never will get the draft right as long as Al Davis is stil around. Perhaps because as I get older, I realize how much better college football is than the NFL for many reasons. Whatever the reason, I despise the NFL ...

It's the one time of the year when we all pay attention to Mel Kiper Jr. — we never know if we're supposed to include the "Junior" or not — so we might as well feature him today before everyone forgets about him again. We've always somewhat admired Kiper for recognizing, while still in college, that a strong demand for draft knowledge existed; more than anyone else, he's the reason people lose their freaking minds about the draft every year. And you know, Akili Smith turned out to be an amazing quarterback. So, yeah: Do you like the Mel Kiper? Do you not like the Mel Kiper? Let's hear about his upside. You look at this stuff and you realize - Mel Kiper is no more an "expert" than half the people on chat boards around the country. Why does anyone care what he thinks? Why should anyone? He's a total clown getting paid sick money by ESPN to share opinions no more informed than those I find every day from people neglecting their actual jobs to be on CB. Prior to 2001 predicted that the Patriots would go 0-16 and get the top pick in the 2002 draft Said in 1998 that Ryan Leaf's "attitude" gave him a mental edge over Peyton Manning Declared John Walsh a 1st round pick in 95 even AFTER his dismal performance at the combine Predicted Adam Steuer of Coastal Carolina would be in the HOF - Steuer was out of the NFL in two years. Named Mike Williams the best player in the 2005 draft - when Merrill Hoge disagreed he said "I'll see you at his HOF induction ceremony." Pretty clear at this pt that there won't be a HOF ceremony for Mike Williams. Stated that J.J. Stokes was a "sure-thing" as a future All-Pro. Stokes never had more than 770 yards receiving in eight seasons with SF. Berated the Colts for picking Marshall Faulk with the second pick in 1994, and said they should have gone with Trent Dilfer or Heath Shuler. Yes. Trent Dilfer or Heath Shuler. ...

Here are some comments from Mel Kiper about the upcoming draft. He seems to think that Brandon Albert could fall in the range where the Hawks are picking, which could be an interesting selection given Kiper said he thinks Albert is a few years away -- as is Walter from retiring: On Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan …. “You make your determination on a quarterback during the year. What type of season he had, the physical attributes he brings to the position and other intangibles he brings. There’s not much you’re going to do during a workout to change the opinion of an NFL team. Peyton Manning did not have a great individual workout but he was still the first overall pick and now he’s a Hall of Fame quarterback. Most individual workouts are outstanding. They’re not many players that don’t nail an individual workout. In terms of Matt Ryan, what he did against Virginia Tech, that throw he made to win that football game, and elevating a team that didn’t have great talent around him … He’s very similar in the way he goes about his business to an Eli Manning, a Ben Roethlisberger and a Phillip Rivers. Those three quarterbacks, that particular year, if he had been blended into those, there are a lot of similarities. And two of those quarterbacks have already won Super Bowls. I think that’s why he’s the No. 1 quarterback … where he ends up right now is anyone’s guess. At worst, he’ll go eight to Baltimore and the other te ...

Filed under: NFL Draft , NFL Media Watch , ESPN I've been at Radio City Music Hall for nearly seven hours now, and the lack of sunshine combined with endless two-minute slices of decades-old rock songs has taken a slow toll on my will to live. And my job has been merely to wander around and pay attention to the ephemera throughout the building -- I've added no insight to the science or business of the draft. The boredom and exhaustion have given me new (if grudging) respect for Mel Kiper, Jr. I can't hear any of ESPN's experts provide their analysis of the draft, but I can clearly see the ESPN set from my dark corner of the press area, and the body language is telling: at any given moment, Chris Mortensen is silently nodding his head, Keyshawn Johnson looks like he needs a beer, Steve Young is clearly waning, and Chris Berman has his chin in his hand to support his massive head (hot air must be heavier than I imagined). Kiper, however, is jabbing his finger in the air, his beady eyes angry at something, his entire body animated -- except for the shell of lacquered keratin atop his head. I don't think his hair has moved in years.   Permalink  |  Email this  |  Linking Blogs  |  Comments ...

Filed under: NFL Draft , ESPN Everyone who loves the NFL draft owes a debt of gratitude to ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. A quarter century ago, most people thought it sounded ridiculous that ESPN would devote a full day of television to the NFL commissioner reading the names of college football players, but Kiper helped bring it into the mainstream. Along the way, the sports media establishment regularly made fun of Kiper, and Kiper hasn't forgotten. On an ESPN conference call to promote the Worldwide Leader's draft coverage, Kiper had this to say about the early days of the draft: "I remember even our own Mike Lupica , he would rip the draft on The Sports Reporters half an hour before we went on the air. Rip me personally and rip the draft. I don't hear that anymore. It's amazing how many people had negative feelings on the draft that all of a sudden now are shutting up about it, because they figure, 'I can't criticize something everybody loves and has an interest in.' Because the ratings speak for themselves. The negativity that we had to deal with all those years is pretty much over." Kiper is right about that: The negativity is over. Yes, there are still people who dislike the draft and say it gets too much attention, especially NBA and NHL fans who hate it when NFL off-season news gets better placement on SportsCenter than playoff highlights. But if there was a dispute between Kiper and Lupica over whether the ...

Filed under: Dolphins , NFL Draft The Dolphins didn't think so little of John Beck that they drafted Matt Ryan with the first-overall pick, but they didn't think enough of him to not take Chad Henne a round later. So what does this mean? Well, Beck and Josh McCown will likely battle for the starting job, with Henne taking a year to get acclimated to the whole NFL thing. Mel Kiper's wig, during a post-draft conference call, doesn't think Henne is a year away from anything other than still being a backup quarterback. In fact, he thought so little of the pick that he slapped the Dolphins with a B-minus draft grade, which obviously makes the 2008 season a complete failure. "I don't see Chad Henne being a big-time quarterback," Kiper said. ... "When you look at having all day to throw, he's accurate," Kiper said. "He'll put the ball on the numbers every time. But in the NFL you don't get all day to throw. You're going to get pressured. When he was pressured at Michigan that long delivery ... his accuracy wasn't very good. That's an issue moving forward for Chad Henne. The Dolphins claim that selecting Henne wasn't an indictment of Beck, but if that's the case, it doesn't make much sense for a one-win team to waste a second-round pick on a backup quarterback. It's one thing to try to rationalize the move if you're New England , but the last thing Miami needs heading into the season are solid backups; there ar ...

Filed under: NFL Draft , NFL Media Watch , ESPN , Blogs It's a strange thing about ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. that he's known almost as much for his hair as he is for his draft analysis. There have been too many Mel Kiper hair jokes to count in the 30 years or so that he's been America's foremost draft analyst, but on Saturday The Sports Hernia came up with an original one , trading Kiper's hair for that of ESPN's other draft analyst, Todd McShay. And then something amazing happened: ESPN not only laughed along with the joke, but put it on SportsCenter . Between this and Chris Berman referencing his YouTube fame , ESPN may be learning that the best way to deal with being laughed at by blogs is to laugh along with them.   Permalink  |  Email this  |  Linking Blogs  |  Comments ...

ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper Jr. was on a national conference call this morning. We're at the stage in the process where the individual workouts are wrapping up. Kiper said not a lot is going to change between now and April 26, the first day of the draft. "The ratings are going to be pretty firm right now," Kiper said. Kiper has been ESPN's top draft analyst since 1984. He is the president of Kiper Enterprises , which he founded in 1981 as a college student. * * * But, first, the 49ers will have their local combine at the team's Santa Clara practice facility on April 18. This is when they can bring in some of draft-eligible players from the local colleges, as well as players who grew up in the area and went away to college. * * * In last year's draft, the 49ers traded up to No. 28 to select offensive tackle Joe Staley. They gave the Patriots a first-round pick in 2008 (No. 7 overall) and a fourth-round pick (No. 110), which turned out to be defensive back John Bowie, whom the Raiders acquired through New England. Then, the 49ers traded their second-round pick (No. 42) to the Colts, who used it to select left tackle Tony Ugoh. The 49ers received the Colts' first-round pick in 2008 (No. 29), along with the Colts' fourth-round pick (No. 126), which the 49ers used to select safety Dashon Goldson. One year in, it looks as if those trades have worked out well for both the 49ers and Colts. We don't know anything about ho ...
