Deadine: 31 October 2008 Naturalistic Decision Making (NDM) encapsulates the problems and challenges associated with making decisions in demanding situations. These decisions are often dependent on, or supported by, computing Technology. The Conference will focus on contemporary research on NDM where interaction with computing Technology is an essential feature. It would be interesting to hear of studies where computers and Technology have been both a hindrance, and benefit, to NDM. We would like the Conference to contribute to our understanding of how computers might ultimately improve NDM. For example, how does future plans for electronic Medical records influence doctors' diagnosis? how do new interactive information visualisation and representations bias or lead poor judgements? what do pilots do to overcome limitations in their flight management systems to support spatial-temporal reasoning? what expertise is needed to watch against traps that Technology create for decision makers? In addition, we also welcome reports of developments in NDM research, including: macro-cognition, cognitive task analysis, micro-macro relationships and alternative approaches. A set of Conference proceedings will be published and distributed at the Conference. It will also be available electronically on CD. The best Conference papers will be selected for further development and (subject to peer review) published in a special issue of the International ... Source: www.nanovip.com --- 36 days ago
Short description Airplanes and Cars Go On a Nanotechnology Diet Article body Manhattan Scientifics (Pink Sheets:MHTX) announced today that immediately after its recent acquisition of Metallicum Inc., the company began manufacturing and seeking licensing partners for NanoTitanium, its proprietary new form of nanostructured metal developed by scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory in conjunction with colleagues in Russia. The company also began pursuing strategic corporate partners in the auto, truck, rail, aircraft manufacturing and Medical industries. Manhattan Scientifics' acquisition of Metallicum Inc. was an important step towards formulating its new business plan, positioning itself as a "green" Technology development company. On July 2, 2008 U.S. Senator Jeff Bingaman led a news Conference describing Manhattan Scientifics' positive potential impact on New Mexico and the U.S. The use of super stronger metals means less material is required for the same purpose, translating to lighter weight and reduced environmental impact. The proprietary Technology is expected to trim thousands of pounds from airplanes and hundreds of pounds from cars without sacrificing structural strength or adding significant cost. The fuel savings to the American public could be significant. A New York Times article on June 11 titled To Save Fuel, Airlines Find No Speck Too Small further details how airlines are scrutinizing every step of their operatio ... 250,000 women/year left infertile from abortion complications By Tim Waggoner ST. PETERSBURG, September 31, 2008 (LifeSIteNews.com) – Alarmingly high abortion rates in Russia are leaving an increasing number of women infertile, said Marina Tarasova, deputy head of the St. Petersburg Research Institute For Gynecology and Obstetrics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, at an international Conference on Monday. The St. Petersburg Times reported that with 64 percent of Russian women procuring abortions, 200,000 to 250,000 women each year are stripped of their biological ability to procreate because of permanent effects from the procedure. "Over the past five years, female infertility in Russia has increased by 14 percent, and over 1.5 million Russians need advanced Medical Technology to become pregnant and maintain a healthy pregnancy," Tarasova said. She also mentioned that by the end of last year, there were 5.5 million infertile couples in the country. In the teenage population, one in four women have a gynecological ailment or reproductive disorder. Furthermore, over the last five years, there has been a 30 percent increase in the number of women aged 15-17 who have experienced these health problems. The Russian government is attempting to promote family values within the country, naming 2008, "The Year of the Family." Abortions, however, are still offered free of charge at all state clinics. ... Google has launched a philanthropic initiative that looks very similar to the Amex Members Project that we gave the old college try some weeks ago: http://www.fightaging.org/archives/001576.php "People are invited to submit ideas for charitable projects that will benefit humanity; Google employees winnow down the (no doubt thousands of) entries to the 100 they like the most; the public at large vote on the 100; and an advisory board picks five to split $10 million in funding." The project submission phase started last week, and we have nothing to lose at this stage by entering many sensible projects for consideration. This is a competition of merit in this early phase: if you think your plan has merit, then submit it. It doesn't matter if someone else has submitted a similar plan, and in fact I suspect that ...
