The U.S. Army Soldier Systems Center recently welcomed the new leader of the organization that studies the effects of environment on soldiers. Col. Kevin N. Keenan took command of U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine from Col. Beau J. Freund on July 9, and was welcomed by Maj. Gen. George W. Weightman, commanding general, U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command. The USARIEM prepares soldiers for the difficult environments they will face and the stresses they will face in the field. The group conducts biomedical Research to improve and sustain soldier health and performance under all conditions, according to Army officials. Weightman said Keenan's credentials were "impressive," and noted that "his three combat tours give him the initial tools…to keep [USARIEM's] focus." Outgoing USARIEM commander, Freund, said the group has undergone many changes during his time in Natick. Specifically, the facilities are better than they have been in years, and the relationship with the Natick Soldier Systems Center is strong, he said. "USARIEM is a dedicated group of professionals who are passionate about their work and at the top of their game," Freund said. Freund announced that USARIEM had been approved for a major military construction project to update their aging Medical facility, with funding anticipated in 2014.  ...
