Related Articles Encounters with Medical Professionals: a crisis of trust or matter of respect? Med Health Care Philos. 2008 Jul 30; Authors: Hallowell N In this paper I shed light on the connection between respect, trust and patients' satisfaction with their Medical care. Using data collected in interviews with 49 women who had managed, or were in the process of managing, their risk of ovarian cancer using prophylactic surgery or ovarian screening, I examine their reported dissatisfaction with Medical encounters. I argue that although many study participants appeared to mistrust their healthcare Professionals' (HCPs) motives or knowledge base, their dissatisfaction arose not from a lack of trust, but from HCPs' failure to treat them as persons or take their concerns seriously. I conclude by describing how respect, as evidenced by "being taken seriously", is important for the development of trusting Patient-HCP relationships. As more summer-like weather patterns begin to permeate the region – this weekend, the National Weather Service is predicting continued humid conditions, with temperatures at or above 90 degrees – the risk to individuals of heat-related illnesses similarly increases. To help guard against the ill-effects of excess heat, area Medical Professionals recently offered advice regarding symptoms and applicable actions. "Heat exhaustion is related to dehydration, although some temperature rise may occur," said Kim Rettenmaier, board certified in emergency medicine, and Medical director of the emergency department at Audrain Medical Center in Mexico. "Heat stroke occurs when the body's temperature regulation systems fail." Donna Miles of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), writing in the government organization's "Job Safety and Health Quarterly" magazine, stated "the body works to maintain a fairly constant internal temperature," even when exposed to severe heat. "It increases blood flow to the skin, where it releases excess heat. The body produces sweat that, when it evaporates, cools the skin." However, according to Miles, "in extreme conditions, this process doesn't work as nature planned. When muscles are being used for physical labor, less blood is available to flow to the skin and release body heat. And sweat doesn't evaporate from the skin in high humidity. The body can't release excess heat, so its core temper ...

A story I recently heard from an correspondent who works as a Medical professional in a general surgery practice reminds me of the distance we have yet to travel in understanding even the seemingly obvious implications of drug abuse. My correspondent's practice sees a breadth of cases, including a diversity of acute trauma cases which are severe enough to require a surgery consult. Some cases will require immediate surgery and a lengthy hospitalization for recovery; several weeks may be required when someone has suffered severe trauma. Other cases might involve a little wait-and-see to determine if surgical intervention is going to be required; a several day observation window would not be uncommon. One of these latter cases resulted in an interesting story. Agent: "We had a guy check himself out against Medical advice while we were waiting to see if he was going to get better or require surgery. The patient was apparently really ticked off that they wouldn't let him out to smoke. He was found a couple of hours later lying in the street." YHN: "So what happened, you mean he bled out or something?" Agent: "Oh, no. In the Emergency Department they hit him with [the opiate antagonist] Narcan and he woke right up" Read the rest of this post... | Read the comments on this post... ...
