Related Articles UK consensus statement on the content of communication curricula in undergraduate Medical Education. Med Educ. 2008 Aug 21; Authors: von Fragstein M, Silverman J, Cushing A, Quilligan S, Salisbury H, Wiskin C, Context The teaching and assessment of clinical communication have become central components of undergraduate Medical Education in the UK. This paper recommends the key content for an undergraduate communication curriculum. Designed by UK educationalists with UK schools in mind, the recommendations are equally applicable to communication curricula throughout the world. Objectives This paper is intended to assist curriculum planners in the design, implementation and review of Medical communication curricula. The document will also be useful in the Education of other health care professionals. Designed for undergraduate Education, the consensus statement also provides a baseline for further professional development. Methods The consensus statement, based on strong theoretical and research evidence, was developed by an iterative process of discussion between communication skills leads from all 33 UK Medical schools conducted under the auspices of the UK Council of Clinical Communication Skills Teaching in Undergraduate Medical Education. Discussion How this framework is used will inevitably be at the discretion of each Medical school and its implementation will be determined by different course designs. Although we ...

Related Articles Clinical skills Education: outcomes of relationships between junior Medical students, senior peers and simulated patients. Med Educ. 2008 Aug 7; Authors: Nicky Hudson J, Tonkin AL Objectives Peer-assisted learning (PAL) has been reported to have educational benefits in cross-year, small-group teaching in other contexts. Accordingly, we explored whether senior Medical students are effective tutors for their junior peers in clinical skills Education, and how the participants in the learning triad (tutors, learners and simulated patients [SPs]) perceive the learning environment created in PAL. Methods Year 2 students were randomly allocated to one of two groups for skills training. Group 1 (n = 64) were tutored by volunteer Year 6 students, and Group 2 (n = 67) by paid doctors. The results of both groups in a clinical skills examination were compared using an independent samples t-test. Qualitative data, obtained from Year 2 students (n = 125) by written questionnaire and Year 6 students (n = 11) and SPs (n = 3) by focus group interviews, were analysed for themes. Results Students receiving PAL did at least as well in the clinical skills examination as students with qualified tutors (difference in mean total score: 0.7 marks out of 112; 95% confidence interval - 3.8 to 2.4). The PAL environment was perceived as 'comfortable' and fostered the development of confidence in all participants. Peer tutors created a more active ...

Related Articles Enhancing evaluation in an undergraduate Medical Education program. Acad Med. 2008 Aug;83(8):787-93 Authors: Gibson KA, Boyle P, Black DA, Cunningham M, Grimm MC, McNeil HP Approaches to evaluation of Medical student teaching programs have historically incorporated a range of methods and have had variable effectiveness. Such approaches are rarely comprehensive, typically evaluating only a component rather than the whole program, and are often episodic rather than continuous. There are growing pressures for significant improvement in academic program evaluation. The authors describe an initiative that arose after a radical reorganization of the undergraduate Medical Education program at the University of New South Wales in part in response to feedback from the accrediting authority. The aim was to design a comprehensive, multicomponent, program-wide evaluation and improvement system. The framework envisages the quality of the program as comprising four main aspects: curriculum and resources; staff and teaching; student experience; and student and graduate outcomes. Key principles of the adopted approach include the views that both student and staff experiences provide valuable information; that measurement of student and graduate outcomes are needed; that an emphasis on action after evaluation is critical (closing the loop); that the strategies and processes need to be continual rather than episodic; and that evaluation ...
