Faced with a critical drop in blood donations, MetroWest Medical Center is getting creative in trying to get people to give. The hospital plans a "student fest" for high school and college students the week of July 21-25, said Amanda Regan, the hospital's blood donor coordinator. Students can win a night out on the town package, a Natick Collections gift card, a Linens 'N' Things gift card or a $50 gas card, she said. From Aug. 11-15, she said, donors will receive a complimentary RemDawg (Jerry Remy) T-shirt, snacks and refreshments, and are also entered to win a $100 Shell gas card and two tickets to the Red Sox Sept. 22 game against Cleveland. Karen Seekamp, MetroWest Medical's manager of blood bank and donor services, said the hospital is down 250 units of blood from previous summers. "This is really a lot," she said. The hospital is doing more mobile blood drives in which it sets up a donor room at local businesses. "We really rely on the mobile blood drives," said Regan. "And there is no better way to give back to the community than to do it through our local businesses." Regan said she believes the drop in donations is tied to rising gas prices. "The economy has had an effect on this. Maybe making one extra step here is going overboard for people with the rising cost of food and gas," she said. MetroWest Medical Center is not the only institution seeing a drop in donations. Molly Dalton, a spokeswoman for the American Red C ...

Army to shoot live pigs for Medical drill - Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080718/ap_on_re_us/army_pigs) The Army says it's critical to saving the lives of wounded soldiers. Animal-rights activists call the training cruel and outdated. Despite opposition by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the Army is moving forward with its plan to shoot live pigs and treat their gunshot wounds in a Medical trauma exercise Friday at Schofield Barracks for soldiers headed to Iraq. Maj. Derrick Cheng, spokesman for the 25th Infantry Division, said the training is being conducted under a U.S. Department of Agriculture license and the careful supervision of veterinarians and a military Animal Care and Use Committee. "It's to teach Army personnel how to manage critically injured patients within the first few hours of their injury," Cheng said. The soldiers are learning emergency lifesaving skills needed on the battlefield when there are no medics, doctors or facility nearby, he said. PETA, however, said there are more advanced and humane options available, including high-tech human simulators. In a letter, PETA urged the Army to end all use of animals, "as the overwhelming majority of North American Medical schools have already done." "Shooting and maiming pigs is outdated as Civil War rifles," said Kathy Guillermo, director of PETA's Laboratory Investigations Department. The Norfolk, Va.-based group demanded the exercise be hal ... Source: kdka.com --- 6 days ago

This is far out, make your own determination on it. A doctor-inventor has devices which he is using for the treatment of both dementia and originally for cold sores . They are specially tuned LED lights at a specific wavelength. The deteriorating brain treatment consists of a therapy helmet with 700 of the lights in the near infra red part of the spectrum. The first patient is responding well according to the report. His original device for cold sores underwent peer review and clinical trials with success. It didn't do anything to the actual virus, it just speeds up the natural healing and immune response in the surrounding tissues. He decided to just try it out on something completely different and even there it seemed to work. ... Find more results for Medical on RSSMicro.com |
