It's the digital equivalent of making lemonade out of lemons. CBS, Universal Music, and other Media Companies are viewing pirated material on YouTube as an advertising opportunity, nytimes.com reports this weekend. These and other Media Companies are selling ads against the content -- even while a copyright lawsuit against Google's YouTube winds its way through the courts. "The move suggests a possible thaw in the chilly standoff between the online video giant and Media Companies," nytimes.com's Brian Stelter writes. ...

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- The sluggish pace of 2008 ad spending is starting to catch up with Media Companies. Second-quarter earnings reports from Viacom, CBS and Walt Disney Co. showed tiny growth in national ad sales and losses in many local sectors. CBS's president-CEO, Les Moonves, even began his company's call with investors by admitting, "We're clearly challenged by the economic conditions affecting many industries, particularly as it pertains to our local businesses." ...

There are many brands and products on the market that people simply don't want to engage in conversations with. Does that mean that those brands should avoid using social Media? I'm sitting at a table writing this and next to me there are placemats, coasters, an alarm clock, and a potted plant. I can tell you for a fact that I could care less to engage in conversations with any of the Companies that made these products (of course this doesn't mean that other people don't want to have these conversations). Nevertheless, these Companies should all be engaging in some level of social Media. One of the assumptions that are floating around the social Media space is that organizations have to use social Media to reach out to their users. That is incorrect. Social Media can also be a great internal communication tool as well. Truth be told, there may be some brands out there that just do not attract or warrant conversations. I don't know who these brands are but I'm sure there are a few out there. Essentially there are 2 ways to test if your company should engage in external social Media: Check if there are already communities/discussions about your brand/product out there. If yes, then you should engage in external social Media to tap into those communities. You will also want to foster the continued growth of those communities. If you scour the internet and determine that nobody is talking about your brand/product then you can try to c ...

To appreciate the power of the new Media, think of the blogosphere and social networking world as a dam, lined with many cracks. Obviously , every crack has the potential to become a major leak, and it' s virtually impossible to devote equal attention to each one. You may focus on the wrong area, and before you know it, you suffer a devestating flood of negative press. Until the 2000s, executives only had to monitor the four major TV news networks and about 10-20 major daily  publications (NY Times, Wall Street Journal,USA Today). Obviously, that's all changed, thanks to the new Media. As social networks, blogs and other online Media become increasingly relevant to modern business, PR Companies such as Vocus are bridging the Media gap for CEO's and company leaders. Most Companies don't have the time or manpower to track blogs and networks all day, and that's where Vocus steps in. Vocus spreads your name to the top bloggers and news sites, but it also offers  Sentiment Analysis, a tool that tracks press, positive or negative, regarding your company-  in real time. Reports are offered in graph form, for easy and instant insight into your company's current image.I interviewed sales executive Joshua K. Gondwe , who outlined the tool's features. You can render reports that show- are you getting a positive zone on these articles or negative?  You can print out a report with graphs and insight to see what publications are saying. You ca ...
