Former Republican to run as Democrat in election to succeed congressman ALBANY -- Former Albany city Republican chairman Joseph P. Sullivan has announced he will run for retiring Congressman Michael McNulty's seat in the 21st district this year. Sullivan, who switched back to his Democratic roots two years ago amid infighting among other Albany Republicans, says he will run as a conservative Democrat. He is the 10th candidate to enter the race.In a press release announcing his run, Sullivan said his campaign priorities include securing the nation's borders; combating terrorism overseas and at home; returning to elementary neighborhood schools in urban areas; and promoting restoration of railroads, the Erie Canal and Hudson River transportation infrastructure. However, national security should be the priority, he said. "If we are not safe, and if we cannot assure the continued availability of (affordably) priced oil, our economy will collapse, our way of life will disappear and our country will cease to exist," he said. "All the other issues being focused on in various local, state and national elections won't matter." Sullivan, a U.S. Navy veteran, is a retired state Senate administrative staffer. In 2005, he made an unsuccessful bid for Albany mayor, losing to Democrat Jerry Jennings. To qualify for the Congressional primary ballot, candidates must obtain valid signatures of those in their enrolled party in the district by July 17 ...
