The first doctor told him it was a stomach flu. Traveling home to Orlando, fomer CBS This Morning anchor Mark McEwen knew he didn't feel right. But hearing that it was probably nothing serious, he hopped on a plane to get home and had a second, major stroke that almost killed him. Today, other than a few slurred words and his slow gait, you'd never know McEwen spent four days in a coma in 2005, near death (McEwen didn't know, either, until someone told him six months later). "I woke up and saw (my family) all around the hospital bed and thought, this can't be good," he told the crowd assembled Thursday at the Poynter Institute for the fourth annual Griot Drum Awards. "Boy was I right." McEwen was the keynote speaker at the Tampa Bay Association of Black Journalists' Griot Drum Awards. Developed as a fundraiser for the group, the ceremony featured the awarding of three $1,000 scholarships to deserving journalism students of color, 23 awards for journalists who have excelled in covering issues related to people of color and performances or presentations by the Soulful Arts Dance Academy, gospel singer September Penn and the Midtown Through Our Eyes youth journalism project.  McEwen capped the evening with a stirring story on his recovery from the stroke, which came as he was living in Orlando, anchoring the morning and noon newscasts at WKMG. Recalling how an airline staffer left him curbside at the Orlando airport as he was in th ...

Bob McEwen spoke to a fired up MonaVie Team in Louisville recently .   His message of economics/politics was thoughtful and challenging to each individual.   Bob is one of the best at taking complex ideas and describing them in simple metaphors and stories to capture the main principles.  It is very important in any discussion to be able to listen and reason with various opinions without immediately getting offended.   It is hard to learn when the first response is offense.  One of the keys is to determine whether the opinion is backed up by experience.  Like the old saying goes, “A person with the facts is never at the mercy of a person with an opinion.”   Don't be threatened by opinions, but study to determine the validity of each opinion from your own experiences.  This is why people with results over the long term are the people that I listen to and respect.  They have proven that their thoughts are more than just opinions.  For example, Abraham Lincoln's opinion weighs heavier in my mind than many others because of his proven leadership and ability to reason through the issues.    "We all declare for liberty; but in using the same word we do not all mean the same thing. With some the word liberty may mean for each man to do as he pleases with himself, and the product of his labor; while with others, the same word may mean for some men to do as they please with other men, and the product of other men's labor. Here are two, not on ...

Mayor-elect Ashley Swearengin will be on the Boren/McEwen political podcast Monday to discuss her transition plans in preparation for taking over the mayor's post in January. You can listen to today's podcast by clicking here . Swearengin is scheduled to announce her transition team Monday and Bill McEwen and I will ask her about what that group will do to prepare her for taking over City Hall. We also will zero in on some of her immediate priorities as she assumes power over California's sixth-largest city. She will be sworn in on Jan. 6. Swearengin was elected mayor on Nov. 4 and will succeed Mayor Alan Autry, who has served two terms as Fresno's top elected official. He could not seek re-election because of term limits. Under Fresno's strong-mayor form of government, Swearengin will run the City Hall administration through her city manager. Right now, she plans to keep Andy Souza, Autry's city manager, in place for about the first six months. She said she'll then conduct a national search for a city manager, and has told City Hall reporters that she hopes that Souza applies for the permanent position. ...

Illinois' child-welfare agency, looking for savings amid a budget crunch, has stopped a 10-month-old employee drug testing program officials say kept five dozen substance users from jobs that could have put them in contact with the state's most vulnerable children. A memo from Department of Children and Family Services director Erwin McEwen, obtained by The Associated Press, indicates drug testing of job seekers, including those of private contractors or vendors, ended Nov. 18. Spokesman Kendall Marlowe said the agency started pre-employment drug screens in February to determine the extent of drug usage among prospective employees. He wouldn't comment on whether there were specific problems, but he said client safety drove the idea. Testing was required for anyone who wanted a job working directly with children and families, such as DCFS workers who investigate allegations of abuse or neglect, caseworkers who determine the best care for an abused child and private-agency monitors of children in foster care. About 3,100 people who had been offered jobs -- provided they were drug-free -- were tested, Marlowe said. Roughly 2 percent -- about 60 -- were positive. "There is a valid concern," Marlowe said. "Even one positive test is a concern." Each test costs $23.50, for a total of just over $70,000, a small amount in a huge state budget. But agencies under Gov. Rod Blagojevich have to find savings because of a worsening economy that ...

Here's another game to add to your must-have list of hardcore Wii games. House of the Dead: Overkill , the latest in the HoD series, promises to go all out on the gore. According to the game's producer, Neil McEwen, all-out gore is nothing we haven't seen in movies anyway. And besides, it's undoubtedly not a game for kids: We're not brutalising any minorities. It's good fun, tongue in cheek - nothing you wouldn't see in a movie. We've really not restrained ourselves in any way. We want to go all guns blazing and make it as extreme as possible almost. Sometimes we've gone 'ooh, we shouldn't really do that', but then we've gone 'no, hell yes we should'. There's no reason we shouldn't do this stuff, it's not exploiting anyone. [...] Nothing we're doing in our game hasn't been done in a movie before. It's undoubtedly an 18 certificate game. We've put censorship badges and warnings all over it. It's not the sort of game I'd give to my Gran... Speaking on the outcry in the UK about the brutality in fellow gore-tastic Wii game, MadWorld , McEwen just said "I think it's just a story for the tabloids." I couldn't have said it better myself. I was talking with bay area radio host Mark Larsen about his decision to wear blackface the day after Barack Obama won the presidency, when he brought up the volunteer group I lead, the Tampa Bay Association of Black Journalists . He criticized the group's mission and name, offering a typical retort: What if there were a National Association of White Journalists? But at a time when more than 40 percent of newspapers don't employ any people of color, do you really need an NAWJ? The simplest answer, is that our group's name describes our focus, not a membership rule. We're working to help media outlets diversify their workforce, so they can better cover an increasingly diverse nation. And our ultimate expression of that effort is tonight's fourth annual Griot Drum Awards and Scholarship dinner. Since the Mid-Florida Society of Professional Journalists stopped its awards ceremony years ago, our Griot Drum Awards is the only local journalism awards contest left, highlighting Tampa Bay area media outlets that have excelled in covering issues relating to people of color. In tonight's ceremony, we're going to hand out $3,000 in scholarships to students of color preparing to be journalists. We're also giving out 23 awards for quality journalism, featuring a keynote speech from former CBS This Morning anchor Mark McEwen, a performance from the Soulful Arts Dance Academy, a presentation on the youth photo exhibit Midtown Through Our Eyes ...

Scientists have discovered how stress - in the form of emotional, mental or physical tension - physically reshapes the brain and causes long-lasting harm to humans and animals. "Stress causes neurons (brain cells) to shrink or grow," said Bruce McEwen, a neuroscientist at Rockefeller University in New York. "The wear and tear on the body from lots of stress changes the nervous system.'' He said that stress is "particularly worrying in the developing brain, which appears to be programmed by early stressful experience." Stress in early life, even in the womb, can later lead to undesirable changes in behavior and the ability to learn and remember. Other consequences may be substance abuse and psychiatric disorders, researchers said at a conference of neuroscientists in Washington this week. "Pre-natal stress can change the brain forever," said Tallie Baram, a neurologist at the University of California, Irvine. "Stress changes how genes are expressed throughout life." ...
