Bob McEwen spoke to a fired up MonaVie Team in Louisville recently . His message of economics/politics was thoughtful and challenging to each individual. Bob is one of the best at taking complex ideas and describing them in simple metaphors and stories to capture the main principles. It is very important in any discussion to be able to listen and reason with various opinions without immediately getting offended. It is hard to learn when the first response is offense. One of the keys is to determine whether the opinion is backed up by experience. Like the old saying goes, “A person with the facts is never at the mercy of a person with an opinion.” Don't be threatened by opinions, but study to determine the validity of each opinion from your own experiences. This is why people with results over the long term are the people that I listen to and respect. They have proven that their thoughts are more than just opinions. For example, Abraham Lincoln's opinion weighs heavier in my mind than many others because of his proven leadership and ability to reason through the issues. "We all declare for liberty; but in using the same word we do not all mean the same thing. With some the word liberty may mean for each man to do as he pleases with himself, and the product of his labor; while with others, the same word may mean for some men to do as they please with other men, and the product of other men's labor. Here are two, not on ... Source: swpp.co.uk --- 14 days ago

Mayor-elect Ashley Swearengin will be on the Boren/McEwen political podcast Monday to discuss her transition plans in preparation for taking over the mayor's post in January. You can listen to today's podcast by clicking here . Swearengin is scheduled to announce her transition team Monday and Bill McEwen and I will ask her about what that group will do to prepare her for taking over City Hall. We also will zero in on some of her immediate priorities as she assumes power over California's sixth-largest city. She will be sworn in on Jan. 6. Swearengin was elected mayor on Nov. 4 and will succeed Mayor Alan Autry, who has served two terms as Fresno's top elected official. He could not seek re-election because of term limits. Under Fresno's strong-mayor form of government, Swearengin will run the City Hall administration through her city manager. Right now, she plans to keep Andy Souza, Autry's city manager, in place for about the first six months. She said she'll then conduct a national search for a city manager, and has told City Hall reporters that she hopes that Souza applies for the permanent position. ... Illinois' child-welfare agency, looking for savings amid a budget crunch, has stopped a 10-month-old employee drug testing program officials say kept five dozen substance users from jobs that could have put them in contact with the state's most vulnerable children. A memo from Department of Children and Family Services director Erwin McEwen, obtained by The Associated Press, indicates drug testing of job seekers, including those of private contractors or vendors, ended Nov. 18. Spokesman Kendall Marlowe said the agency started pre-employment drug screens in February to determine the extent of drug usage among prospective employees. He wouldn't comment on whether there were specific problems, but he said client safety drove the idea. Testing was required for anyone who wanted a job working directly with children and families, such as DCFS workers who investigate allegations of abuse or neglect, caseworkers who determine the best care for an abused child and private-agency monitors of children in foster care. About 3,100 people who had been offered jobs -- provided they were drug-free -- were tested, Marlowe said. Roughly 2 percent -- about 60 -- were positive. "There is a valid concern," Marlowe said. "Even one positive test is a concern." Each test costs $23.50, for a total of just over $70,000, a small amount in a huge state budget. But agencies under Gov. Rod Blagojevich have to find savings because of a worsening economy that ...

Scientists have discovered how stress - in the form of emotional, mental or physical tension - physically reshapes the brain and causes long-lasting harm to humans and animals. "Stress causes neurons (brain cells) to shrink or grow," said Bruce McEwen, a neuroscientist at Rockefeller University in New York. "The wear and tear on the body from lots of stress changes the nervous system.'' He said that stress is "particularly worrying in the developing brain, which appears to be programmed by early stressful experience." Stress in early life, even in the womb, can later lead to undesirable changes in behavior and the ability to learn and remember. Other consequences may be substance abuse and psychiatric disorders, researchers said at a conference of neuroscientists in Washington this week. "Pre-natal stress can change the brain forever," said Tallie Baram, a neurologist at the University of California, Irvine. "Stress changes how genes are expressed throughout life." ...
